Purdue Marketing Might Want to Rethink Football Promos

Really guys? Come on!

The beginning of August is usually an exciting time even for Purdue fans because it means that season tickets will start arriving in mailboxes across the country. Today was that day for me. I came outside to see the familiar gold envelope in my mailbox just has it been every year since 1987 for me (minus 1994 when my sister got married and the family sacrificed tickets to save for the wedding). They were right there, all seven games of hope that maybe there is a miraculous turnaround in the cards.

We Purdue season tickets holders are at least loyal in that regard. It may look bleak, but there are at least a few of us that keep believing even now.

As usual, the tickets came with various promotional materials, including the slick ad for each game’s promo:

Yes. Purdue made THE PENN STATE GAME the game to promote its KID’S CLUB. With the Sandusky scandal still making waves even several years later it is not like it has been long forgotten. Sure, it is a home game and the current incarnation of the coaching staff had nothing to do with it, but come on! This is incredibly tone deaf at best!

Even worse: It is not like Penn State comes to Ross-Ade Stadium that often. Being in the East Division this might be their only trip to West Lafayette for 5-6 years.

I just… wow.

Michigan State Makes Top 10 for OT Mekhi Becton

6-7, 345-pound recruit also considering Michigan, Penn State.

Michigan State is in the running for a top 2017 offensive tackle from Virginia, but the Spartans will have to beat out their in-state rivals to bring him to East Lansing.

Mekhi Becton is a 6-7, 345 OT from the Old Dominion with two dozen offers. Today he released his top 10:

Per 247Sports, Becton is thought to be leaning toward the home-state Virginia Cavaliers. His top 10 list also includes a number of Big Ten schools, including Michigan, Maryland, Rutgers and Penn State in addition to MSU.

Here he is in action:

Louisville Football Recruiting: Cornerback Kaheem Roach Commits

Louisville continued to load up on big defensive backs by landing a commitment from Miramar, FL cornerback Kaheem Roach.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Louisville’s placed a heavy emphasis on landing defensive backs for the class of 2017 that have size and range. As has been the case with virtually every defensive back commitment so far, the Cardinals’ coaching staff have succeeded by landing a commitment from Miramar, FL cornerback Kaheem Roach. Roach (6’1, 185) is Louisville’s 18th commitment for the recruiting class of 2017, one that is heavy on defensive backs at the moment. He announced his commitment Monday night via his personal Twitter account.

Roach is rated a composite three-star cornerback according to 247Sports rating system. He lists offers from SEC powers Auburn and LSU as well as offers from Illinois as well as Temple and Central Florida. You can see in his highlight video below he’s a very physical defensive back that’s not at all afraid to come up and make a tackle.

It’s worth noting that Roach was recruited by Cort Dennison, one of Louisville’s new assistant coaches who has worked tirelessly to keep Louisville plugged into south Florida. it is no small feat for Louisville to pull a kid out of Miramar.

Oregon State Football sends Official Offers to Recruits

Recruits have been excited to receive and post their official scholarship offers on Twitter today. The bad news is one of OSU’s top targets, Antwan Collier, committed to Illinois.

As the calendar rolls from July to August it marks a big day for college football. August 1st is the first day that high school football prospects from the 2017 class can receive written scholarship offers.

It is no secret that Gary Andersen and his staff have been making recruiting a priority. And they wasted no time in getting their written scholarship offers out as soon as possible.

The offers have been rolling in and they have gotten even more elaborate. When schools battle for top recruits they constantly look for ways to stand out and separate themselves. Oregon State is no different and they did a great job with their official offers.

Among those to post their official offers were Oregon State commits Arex FlemingsBrock WellsfryFabian Kratz and Isaiah Miller. Here’s an example of Oregon State’s official offer: (courtesy of Arex’s Twitter)

Other high school recruits to receive Oregon State offers and post them to Twitter are listed below: (click on the players names to see the tweets)

Also, Jeffery Manning Jr, a 3-star cornerback decommitted from UCLA today. He went on to announce that his recruitment is 100 percent open. He also posted his official Oregon State offer on Twitter and is a guy Gary Andersen and his staff will be recruiting heavily in the coming months.

Obviously with some many guys receiving offers (and these were only the ones who posted them on Twitter) Coach Andersen and his staff are not expecting them all to choose the Beavers. With 13 recruits having already verbally committed to Oregon State; the 2017 class is getting closer and closer to completion. Landing a few of these three and four star recruits would really give Oregon State’s 2017 recruiting class a big boost though.

In other recruiting news, Antwan Collier a top defensive back from Florida has decided to attend Illinois and announced his decision on Twitter today. He was someone Oregon State was heavily recruiting and hoping to earn a commitment from.

WSU football recruiting: four-star wide receiver Anthony White, Jr. commits to Washington State

The Miami Central stand out will make his way to Pullman, choosing WSU over a slew of other offers.

For the second time today, WSU has landed a big-time recruit out of Florida. This morning, three-star cornerback Zaire Webb pledged crimson over multiple offers, including one from North Carolina. This evening, four-star wide receiver Anthony White, Jr. from the powerhouse Miami Central chose Washington State over offers from a host of schools, including Illinois, Kentucky, Cincinnati, South Carolina, Army, Navy and LSU.

White, who stands 6’1″ and weighs 160 pounds, is the 13th commit in the 2017 class and the third wide receiver. The consensus four-star receiver committed just days after getting his offer from Washington State, a location his teammate Carmoni Green, a three-star wide receiver, is also considering.

Our own Brian Anderson with his quick thoughts on what White, Jr. brings to the table:

“White Jr. plays in the highly competitive 8A District 13 league down in Florida for what is regarded as a powerhouse program in that state, American High. He’s a rangy 6-1 with really good straight line speed. He displayed some great skill running through traffic in the middle of the field on WR screens, usually getting straight up field after a catch for the most yardage. A few highlights have him sitting in zones during in-breaking routes — slants, digs, posts, etc — showing off a great field awareness, one of the more important traits for a wide receiver in Mike Leach’s offense. White Jr. is a fast kid that torched pretty decent DBs on GO routes and showed real potential to be a playmaker with the ball in his hand after a reception. He tracks well to play outside, fitting a lot of qualities WSU has utilized at Z. This is a really good pick-up for the Cougs and his primary recruiter Coach Shephard, this class is absolutely stacked at wide receiver”.

Big, big day for Washington State in the recruiting world. They’d already made their way into the top 40 on Rivals rankings and White, Jr.’s commitment could continue to move them up other lists. They’ve also got half their class for next February filled out before the ball is even kicked on 2016.

Florida football recruiting: Cornerback Marco Wilson, brother of Quincy, commits to Gators

A second Wilson will come to The Swamp.

Like brother, like brother: Four-star cornerback Marco Wilson, brother of Florida junior Quincy Wilson, became the latest prospect to join Florida’s recruiting class on Monday night, announcing his commitment on a radio program.

Wilson made his commitment on his father Chad’s Gridiron Studs radio show, saying “I think the best choice for me would be to commit to the University of Florida.” He picked the Gators over his dad’s Miami Hurricanes, Georgia, Ohio State, and USC.

But don’t think big brother had that much to do with this commitment. Chad Wilson said on air that Quincy was kept in the dark on the commitment, which Marco commended with a resounding “Good!”

Wilson held reams of offers even as a rising junior in 2015, before a torn ACL kept him out for the entire fall season. He’s come back stronger, reportedly, but the athlete who set the Internet ablaze with a catch in the middle of a backflip has had his star cool on the recruiting trail, if only slightly, without another year of game tape.

That diminution of esteem may not mean a diminution of talent, given what Wilson was able to do as a sophomore at American Heritage in South Florida. In his highlights, Wilson appears to be every bit as physical as his bigger, stronger older brother, with slightly better speed and quickness.

Wilson is the 13th member of a recruiting class that entered the national top 15 with his commitment, and the second cornerback, following Calfornian Elijah Blades.

Arkansas Razorbacks Internet Chatter – Offensive Line, Bielema’s Golf Swing, Recruiting

Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports

One of the biggest blessings of the Razorback offense last season was the consistency of the offensive line. It’s rare to have five such talented players, and even rarer to keep them all healthy. This season the line has a few more question marks, and this article breaks down some of the position battles taking place on the line. There are a few guys battling for different spots. In addition to that it has a quick report on other things as practice is about to begin.

The signing of Montaric Brown was a big deal, Arkansas held on to the top prospect in the state, fended off Alabama for him, and got a player in a position of need. The article here talks about the importance of keeping the best players in the state. Bielema has talked publicly about getting those guys and it has usually turned into success for the team when they can stay in state. Tight Ends coach Barry Lunney talks about how important it is in the article as well.

Have you ever wondered about Bret Bielema’s golf game? Well thanks to the magic of video, you can see his swing and its, well, violent. I’m not an avid golfer but even I know a swing coach would probably faint looking at that swing. Who knows, maybe he could get a few pointers from John Daly at some point.

There was some ProHog on ProHog violence this weekend in the major leagues. The good news was that James McCann had his first major league grandslam to cap off a huge first inning for the Detroit Tigers. The bad news is that it came off former teammate Dallas Keuchel. Elsewhere in the majors, Brett Eibner had a solid start to his major league career and has been dealt to the Athletics. To go from the defending World Series Champs to the A’s, who sometimes have less people in the stands than Baum Stadium, is a tough move.

Darius Stills Decommits Two Days After He Commits To Rutgers

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

Well….

Let’s just go through a brief timeline of events for 3-star DT Darius Stills of Fairmont, WV.

4:48pm on Saturday, July 30th, 2016

Darius Stills commits to Rutgers after attending recruiting BBQ. All is good.

5:20pm on Saturday, July 30th, 2016

Darius Stills posts his official commitment announcement in writing with a fancy edit. All is good.

8:31pm on Sunday, July 31st, 2016

Out of the blue and 100% unwarranted, Darius Stills says he has made the best decision of his life to commit to Rutgers. No one expected him to say this, so we are led to believe his commitment is super strong. All is good.

12:14pm on Monday, August 1st, 2016

Darius Stills tweets out his official offer from Rutgers, as many recruits did, since today was the first day that schools could officially offer c/o 2017 recruits. Stills is very happy, his offer is now official, his commitment seems strong as ever. All is good.

1:40pm on Monday, August 1st, 2016

Darius Stills tweets out that he has been offered by his home state school, West Virginia. I can’t really talk shit about West Virginia since Rutgers has never beaten them, but this is a weak move by them. They most likely felt that since Stills was a legacy and not a very highly ranked recruit, he would just walk on and they could save a scholarship. Then, Dana Holgorsen realizes he actually needs to recruit legacies and blindly throws out an offer in order to not look bad when people want to know why he is losing in-state legacies to Rutgers. Now he has offered a player who clearly is not a take for West Virginia and put Darius Stills is a rough position. All is not well.

6:20pm on Monday, August 1st, 2016

Darius Stills tells us what we all knew when he was offered by WVU; he will not be attending Rutgers.

Positive Spin

Rutgers loses the lowest ranked player in the class and now there is room for both Fred Hansard and Cory Bolds. Hunt on, Chris Ash.

University of Florida police release video leading to arrests of Tyrie Cleveland, Rick Wells

Video shows players shooting into dorm, glass breaking.

Responding to a records request from The Alligator, Florida’s University Police Department has released video from the Springs dorm depicting Gators freshmen Tyrie Cleveland and Rick Wells shooting BB guns at and into the dorm, breaking windows, in a July incident.

The above GIF shows one angle in which Cleveland (in dreadlocks) opens a door to Springs while Wells (in hat) fires BB pellets — from a weapon that looks very much like a handgun — into the building.

The video published by The Alligator includes a longer clip from a north camera in which both players open a door propped open by a third person, and pull out their weapons and either fire or merely point their weapons at him — followed by that person emerging from Springs and walking off with Cleveland.

A different south camera angle shows shots that leave three panes of glass webbed with cracks, but not either Cleveland or Wells.

The video doesn’t look any better or worse than I expected, frankly, and what I see after watching both longer videos is juvenile horsing around with BB guns — if the third unidentified person is who Cleveland and Wells were shooting at, it sure seems as if he knew they weren’t shooting more dangerous firearms at him — that results in significant property damage.

Cleveland and Wells were arrested in the early morning hours on July 25, and face multiple felony charges.
