Following a pair of solid pickups last week, Arkansas gained another today in Louisiana linebacker Josh Paul of New Orleans De La Salle. Paul becomes the 13th member of the Razorbacks’ 2017 class.

Per Danny West of HawgSports.com, Paul was receiving interest but did not receive offers from Ole Miss and Mississippi State. He did, though, have offers from Ball State, Jackson State, Nicholls and a couple of other small schools.

Before you become disappointed in his offer sheet, read this:

If you’re interested in getting a closer look at his game, here’s a link to his Hudl and all of his highlight tapes.

Paul’s commitment also adds yet another Louisiana player, which Arkansas has become quite good at the last couple of years thanks to Michael Smith. Per West, Paul’s pledge makes 13 Boot Kids since 2014.

WATCH: Charlie Strong says that Texas has a different attitude

The youth movement is starting to take over the team.

Watch Texas Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong’s full press conference from Wednesday June, 22, some rare insight into the team during the offseason and the first time that he’s addressed the media in more than two months.

Strong discussed the quarterback battle, the academic situations of incoming freshmen Erik Fowler and Marcell Southall, freshman ATH Lil’Jordan Humphrey working at WR, the Notre Dame game in September, the kicking depth (or lack thereof) his thoughts on satellite camps and much, much more.

Load it up and listen to it on the ride to work tomorrow.

Why does the video player have a word count minimum? It’s a video. It doesn’t need a word count. Just load the damn thing and hit play. Is 100 words really not enough for a video? OK. This is absurd. I am going to have to ramble on and on until SBN will let me publish this video for you all to enjoy. I bet it demands 150 words or more. We are at 140. OK, just a few more.

Perfect. Enjoy.

UCLA Offers 2018 QB Cameron Rising

UCLA offered 2018 Newbury Park HS QB Cameron Rising a scholarship today. By itself, that news isn’t that big since UCLA does extend a lot of offers. But it was who Rising ran into on campus that makes it somewhat newsworthy.

The world of high school recruiting is fickle to say the least.

It’s tough enough when a kid commits as high school kids do have a tendency to change their minds.

That’s one of the reasons why we usually wait until a kid announces a commitment and we generally don’t cover every scholarship offer UCLA makes to high school students.

But, today, we’re going to make an exception.

UCLA offered a 2018 quarterback today from Newbury Park HS named Cameron Rising. Cameron was quite happy to pick up the offer from UCLA today and, as is the norm these days, he tweeted about it.

I’d like to wish Cameron the best of luck in his recruiting process and, while I certainly hope he chooses to attend the greatest university on the planet, the reason I’m writing about this today is because of who Cameron met while he was on campus today.

Doug Dagan, one of Cameron’s Newbury Park High coaches posted a few other pics from the campus visit.

Apparently, Seattle Seahawks quarterback and girlfriend Ciara were also on campus and were kind enough to pose for pictures with Cameron and Coach Dagan.

As those of us who have spent significant time on the UCLA campus can attest, in case there was any doubt, this is the sort of thing which can happen anytime at UCLA.

Let’s just hope that Wilson wasn’t trying to recruit Rising to Wisconsin or NC State.

Go Bruins!!!

Syracuse Football Recruiting: 3-Star Florida WR Josh Palmer Commits to Orange

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Another day, another wide receiver commitment for the Orange.

The Syracuse Orange have added yet another verbal commitment to the class of 2017. St Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) wide receiver Josh Palmer pledged to SU this evening, according to 247 Sports.

With recent Syracuse football camps around the country, and a bunch of visitors last weekend, it was expected that recruiting could pick up a bit, and so it has. Palmer makes for the third commit in the last four days, and the second wideout. Washington D.C.’s Nykeim Johnson announced his own decision yesterday.

While SU’s other 2017 receivers, Nykeim Johnson and Sharod Johnson are both better suited for the slot, Palmer is a sure-fire X-receiver at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds. He’s rated three stars, and is one of the top 100 or so players in the state of Florida, as well as one of the top 100ish receivers nationally, according to 247. Scout has him ranked in the top 80 among all wide receivers.

Palmer visited Syracuse, along with Pittsburgh and Maryland in the last couple weeks. He went with the Orange over offers from those two programs, as well as Purdue, Louisville, Nebraska, NC State, Illinois, Wake Forest and more.

Scout spoke to Palmer earlier in June:

“The facilities and the indoor field stood out to me at Syracuse. Also, they have really good educational support there, which is important.

“The coaching staff was very friendly and fun to be around too, and I really liked coach Babers and his offense. It’s a really good system and I think I could do well there.”

As Scout also notes, he’s originally from Canada (Ontario), just like recent outside linebacker commit Tyrell Richards.

With the addition of Palmer, Syracuse now six players in the 2017 class, two of whom (Palmer and Sharod Johnson) play down in South Florida.

Tape on Palmer is below, for those interested:

Jaylen Griffin reopens his recruitment, decommits from Cal

Cal is back down to one linebacking commit in the 2017 recruiting class. Linebacker Jaylen Griffin has reopened his recruitment. The Georgia defender says he’s still considering Cal, along with Boston College, Colorado State, Louisville and Virginia Tech.

Cal recently received a commitment from junior college linebacker Da’Quan Patton (and another commitment from quarterback Chase Garbers), so the Bears aren’t bereft of linebacker talent. But as has been mentioned before, the Bears are running short on linebackers going forward and could use all the commitments they can find at that position.

Cal still has seven commitments in their 2017 recruiting class, including Garbers, Patton, wide receiver Taariq Johnson, defensive end Gabe Cherry, athlete Jeremiah Hawkins, athlete Michael Onyemaobi, and defensive back Je’Quari Godfrey. The Bears do have plenty of time to find defenders to replace Griffin though, so hopefully there is time.

Cal fans, your thoughts on Griffin’s decommitment?

Boston College Football Recruiting: 2017 DE Marcus Valdez Commits To Eagles

Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

The camp season is in full swing for Boston College, and they continue to grab commits from kids in the class of 2017. This time Boston College has landed a commitment from 2017 DE Marcus Valdez

Valdez, who attends Don Bosco in New Jersey, is a 2* recruit that has a good chunk of solid offers. His offer sheet includes Syracuse, Rutgers, Duke along with Kent State, Navy, Army, Bowling Green and FAU. Clearly this is the territory of Anthony Campanile, who’s brother was once an assistant coach of the school. Valdez is currently 6’1 243lb.

Additional notes: Commit DE Kwity Paye camped at Notre Dame over the weekend, but as of this writing he has not received an offer. If he receives a Fighting Irish offer, this will be a situation worth watching.

* Also, Boston College received a commitment in the past 24 hours from New Hampshire QB Drew McQuarrie, who confirmed today to this writer that he was recruited as a tight end. BCI will write up this commitment in the next 24 hours.

* There were quite a few additional offers out this week after the camp, be sure to follow me at @BCHysteria to find out more about the recruits .

Wake Forest Football Recruiting: Cornerback Troy Simon Commits to Wake Forest

The Wake Forest football program just landed a major recruit. Troy Simon, a defensive back out of Alpharetta, Georgia, has committed to play football at Wake Forest University. 247 Sports ranks him as a 3-star prospect and the 60th best cornerback in the 2017 recruiting class. More importantly, he chose Wake Forest over offers from Notre Dame, Mississippi State, and California.

Troy Simon has excellent size at 6’1″, 180 pounds. He comes from Milton High School, which is an excellent program in the Atlanta area. Simon, along with D.J. Taylor and Jamal Riggins, have the potential to give Wake Forest an excellent defense moving forward. Simon is a very physical corner, who also has very good coverage skills. He was named the defensive back MVP at The Opening regional in Atlanta.

The Wake Forest staff identified Simon early and deserve major credit for building the relationship and beating out several major programs for his services. This is a major addition, and Simon has a great chance to play very early in his career.

Clemson Recruiting: Dabo Swinney Camp Aftermath

So the dust has settled on another successful camp. We can debate the positives and negatives of satellite camps in another post (I see some distinct advantages that I think Clemson could strategically gain from), but the current model is working. And that is an understatement. Like FSU (another team not buying into the satellite camp hoopla), Clemson’s camps are a well oiled machine and part of what has driven Dabo’s recruiting success. Here is a summary of where we stand with the top 2017 prospects who came to camp.

Mr. Tee

You have probably heard a bunch of swirling rumors about Tee Higgins (6’4, 185) recently. Here it is for you straight. Yes, Higgins has publicly declared Tennessee as his leader. Yes, Higgins has attended a lot of UT camps and functions lately. No, he is not planning on committing today or tomorrow.

What is certain? I would rather be Clemson at this very moment than UT.

Higgins decommited from Tennessee for a reason. He feels a ton, and I mean a ton, of local pressure to go to UT. It is not even funny or healthy–it is out of control. Butch and his staff will continue this aggressive pursuit, it is what they are built for. You shouldn’t feel comfortable about landing Higgins if you are Clemson until the fax is sent in and he sets foot on campus. But again, Clemson is in a better position right now.

Higgins camp served to reinforce the things he enjoys about Clemson. He has a strong connection with Coach Scott and bonds with Amari and now Hunter Johnson as well. All I can say is that during camp, in the confines of our indoor facility, magic was being performed. Higgins high points the ball better than anyone in the 2017 class, his catch radius is insane, hands are elite. He is deceptively fast for his height and glides down the field smoothly–gaining uncanny separation with the ball in the air. He has the ability to be great. I hear he loves a good Cookout.

OrTre Smith

Camps also allow a relaxed setting for coaches to explain. Clemson has needed to do some explaining to OrTre (6’3 215). That work could only be done with a visit to campus and that work was done. Clemson explained where and how OrTre would fit into the offense. How, despite other elite WRs around him, Clemson’s offense produces enough reps, yards, and TD’s to get multiple WR’s to the NFL (and how being an elite WR in an inept offense isn’t all that great).

They dispelled the rumor that OrTre would eventually play TE at Clemson. I know it is hard not to see a Brandon Ford comparison but Smith has much better speed and is more physically ready than Ford. Its not an appropriate comparison at all. Smith can stick and excel at WR for Clemson as a large body receiver who can play the 5 position or the 9 if he continues to progress. He is a perfect fit at the 5 for what Clemson wants to do. Very physical, but still has enough skill and good enough hands to win jump balls. It will take a bit of time for OrTre and the family to detox from the onslaught of negative recruiting that has been heaped on Clemson, but I think it is safe to say that Clemson currently leads.

Oh and did you see where Rivals senior analyst Mike Farrell predicted James Robinson would ultimately end up at Clemson? Its a tough job being a national guy but on this one he just dropped the ball. Not happening, just no.

DE Possibilities

If you haven’t seen by now, Clemson is picking up steam in the crystal ball world of pickings for one Zach Carter (6’5 255). Carter had a standout camp. Working out a few sessions with Coach Hobby and displaying that long, strong frame that is perfectly suited for Clemson’s SDE position.

Clemson sees a future Dodd in Carter–someone who is strong at the point of attack, can set the edge, and who will develop into a pass rusher in time. I see a lot of Goodman right now. A guy with the freakish wingspan you covet, but still very raw. My question with him is his speed (especially straight line speed) and ability to effectively play in space. I do see short burst explosiveness from Carter, but he will need to refine his technique and keep his agility with the added weight gain. Carter also wraps up well and bats down a ton of balls at the line of scrimmage. There is a lot for Hobby to mold there and Hobby loves Carter as a player. Hobby is the ideal position coach for a talent like Carter.

Carter was once a big-time Clemson lean. I intimated early on that it was a matter of when not if. The “when” will shortly be upon us. The road hasn’t been as clear cut as I initially projected, however. Florida came on very strong (I think there were times where both schools questioned whether he was a take or not, especially when Clemson was only going to take one DE). Florida was said to be leading going into Clemson’s camps. Clemson is in a strong position and this will continue our Tampa connection that we have built in the past three cycles.

Malik Herring (6’4 250) recently listed Clemson as his public leader. I’m not going to say that this is a bad thing, but its clear that this is a Georgia, Clemson battle with Tennessee as the darkhorse. I don’t think this is a done deal to Georgia like so many have said. Herring keeps in contact with Clemson coaches and the coaches think they have a legitimate chance. It would be a seismic upset if it came to fruition.

CB/DB

Lots of moving parts here for so few CB/DB slots.

Jamyest Williams (5’9 175), now of Grayson, HS in GA, was once a strong Clemson lean–and I mean really strong. He seriously loves Clemson. That was coming off of Clemson’s national championship run and last summer. Jamyest knew he wanted to enjoy the recruiting process though (something Coach Swinney encourages by the way), and enjoy it he has. He has been all over the country and visited every major school, which has muddied the waters considerably.

Right now I think you have Georgia, who has always been a presence but really made a push once Kirby Smart became coach, as a legitimate threat. Florida State has also made a strong push. Alabama has made a charge. Ohio State feels they are in a good position. It is complicated and Clemson has suitors banging down the walls wanting to take that CB slot. Clemson has started to turn the heat up just a little bit on Williams, but he loves the recruiting process (again, totally his prerogative) and is being courted by the best in the business. I’m sure if you are in that position it is hard not be impressionable. Williams remains one of the most technically sound CB in this class. Great speed, body control, and tons of confidence and fight. Plays with a chip on his shoulder because of his height.

If only we had two more scholarships for this position–it would make things a lot easier on the staff. You could accept a commitment now and wait it out for a player like Jamyest who is on that oversign bubble. Right now I don’t think Clemson will have room for Williams if they take a commitment from another DB.

Case in point: Tre Shaw (6’0 180) from Ellenwood, GA. Shaw is a composite top 300 player, but I think that ranking is a bit low. I would have him sitting in the top 200. For me, he profiles as more of a Nickel prospect, but that is mainly because there isn’t a ton of film on him playing CB (and I haven’t seen him personally). He is strong in run support and not afraid to attack the line of scrimmage. Good speed and size. Glowing reviews about his character and personality, certainly a cultural fit for Clemson.

Now Coach Reed worked with him during the camp and felt like he checked all the boxes as a legit CB take. He visited twice in a week and could be on commit watch. The question the staff is mulling is whether to take him or wait it out for someone like Williams. I think more signs are pointing to Shaw. It is the same question for a prospect like CJ Avery as well (I see AJ Terrell as an oversign regardless). I still think we sign 3 DBs in this class, but the coaches are set on only taking two more at the present moment. Very hard questions that would be much easier with a few more open scholarships.

Report: Former Syracuse Football C Macky MacPherson Will Return as Graduate Assistant

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Syracuse.com’s Stephen Bailey reports that former Syracuse Orange center Macky MacPherson will be returning to SU as a graduate assistant, pending admission as a student. MacPherson, grandson of long-time Orange coach Dick MacPherson, was a three-year starter at Syracuse from 2011-2013. During that time, the team won 20 games and two bowl games.

After failing to make it with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, MacPherson was a graduate assistant with Louisiana Tech last season, and was hired for the same role at NC State this year. However, he’s always wanted to head back to SU.

Macky’s brother, Cam MacPherson currently plays tight end for Syracuse. Their grandfather, Coach Mac, was honored at the Carrier Dome last season.

Again, barring admission (seems pretty likely), he’ll be the fifth grad assistant on staff for 2016, joining Bart Tanski, Christopher Kirkpatrick, Lanear Sampson and Jesse Johnson. He’s the only one of those five to have received his undergraduate degree from Syracuse.

Welcome back, Macky! It’s great to see you in Orange yet again.

Recap and Review: Baylor Football’s 2016 Recruiting Class (THREAD)

After the firing of Art Briles, the 2017 recruiting class exploded (in a bad way), leaving only one commitment for Baylor (Jalen Pitre <333)

However, the 2016 class had already signed, and many in that class have requested transfer to a different school and in some cases, some of the players have asked that Baylor allow them out of their letter of intent (LOI). This article will outline who has requested transfer, who is signing elsewhere, who is staying, etc…

Offense:

Zach Smith, QB: Enrolled at Baylor. No indication from him as to him leaving.
Kam Martin, RB: Has not enrolled and is reportedly weighing his options.
Jared Atkinson, WR: Enrolled at Baylor. Tweeted out that he will be staying at Baylor

Devin Duvernay, WR: Baylor messed up on his LOI, he will enroll at the University of Texas

Donovan Duvernay, ATH: Has not enrolled at Baylor, will be seeking release from his LOI. Even though they haven’t offered him, Texas seems to be the favorite.
Tren’Davian Dickson, WR: Dickson has announced that he will be transferring to the University of Houston. Because he enrolled in the Spring, and had already taken classes at Baylor, he will likely sit out this upcoming season, but that could be viewed as an unofficial redshirt.
Denzel Mims, WR: Enrolled at Baylor. No indication from him that he is thinking about transferring.
Patrick Hudson, OL: Hasn’t announced his plans, but sources say he will stay at Baylor
JP Urquidez, OL: Will seek transfer; his father has been outspoken about wanting him released from his LOI immediately.
Tyrae Simmons, OL: The JUCO OL enrolled at Baylor. Seeing as Baylor and Fresno State were his only two offers, I’d say it’s safe to bet he will be staying.
Branton Autry, OL: Enrolled but has since been kicked off the team for a violation of team rules.

Defense:

Dequinton Osborne, DT: Did not enroll at Baylor, was released from his LOI, and has committed to Oklahoma State.
Jeremy Faulk, DT: Along with Branton Autry, was dismissed from the team for a violation of team rules.
Will Jones, DT: Will enroll at Baylor.
Bravvion Roy, DT: Enrolled at Baylor, all signs point to him staying.
Brandon Bowen, DE: Has played it very close to the chest. His twitter bio still says “Baylor Commit” for what it’s worth.
Micheal Johnson, DE: Enrolled at Baylor, haven’t seen any indication that he will leave or transfer.
Deonte Williams, LB: Announced he will be enrolling in July at Baylor.
Thomas Cletcher, LB: Enrolled at Baylor and all signs point to him staying.
Parrish Cobb, DB: Will not enroll at Baylor, his father has also been vocal about wanting him to be released from his LOI immediately.
Grayland Arnold, DB: Enrolled at Baylor, will not seek transfer
Raleigh Texada, DB: Enrolled at Baylor, will not seek transfer. Here’s a cool tweet that a local news outlet tweeted about his commitment.

Rajah Preciado, DB: Enrolled, all signs point to him staying.
Chris Miller, S: This tweet from Colt Barber says it all

Kenan Ivy, S: All signs point to Ivy enrolling at Baylor, but he has yet to enroll. He did tweet this out however, on June 14:

And finally, Connor Martin, K: Will enroll at Baylor.

If any news or tweets are posted about who is going where/who is staying, put them in the comments. I tried to find the most recent posts about Baylor that I could. That being said, if everyone who is not enrolled and requesting a release leaves Baylor, that would put us at 16(?) commitments. Connor Martin is a PWO, so he does not count against scholarship limits.

Also, I would like to point out that before any Baylor fan complains about and/or tweets something bad to some of the recruits requesting a release, that this is more than just another player who will get time for Baylor. This is a player’s life. If they do not want to come to Baylor, then by all means, they should not be forced to.
