It’s here. We know you missed it. It’s the final cockdown.

The resurgence of summertime baseball on South Carolina’s campus may have taken over the headlines for now, but that doesn’t mean we can neglect our obligation to get football on your mind three months before kickoff. And what better way to do so than run through the roster one player, one day at a time.

That’s right, it’s back. It’s where we find out who’s who on the roster of 84. It’s the Final Cockdown.

Leading us off for the third straight season…

Abu Lamin

Redhshirt Senior
6’2″ / 295 lbs.
Fayetteville, N.C.

Recruitment

4 stars as a part of the Class of 2014 out of Fort Scott Community College. Ranked as the #19 junior college player in his class. Other major offers included Tennessee, Nebraska, Arkansas, Florida, Auburn and Alabama.

College Career

The majority of Lamin’s success came during his time in Fort Scott, KS for the Greyhounds, which isn’t exactly the best news for the Gamecocks faithful. Lamin was widely recruited by some storied FBS programs before committing to the Gamecocks, but his hype hasn’t translated into any major college football success thus far. That said, Lamin has one year left of eligibility and a new coaching staff in Columbia scoping out his potential contribution.

The 295 pound defensive tackle has recorded at total of 13 tackles in 20 appearances for South Carolina in two seasons. Known as a run stopping plug and piercing lineman, Lamin hasn’t been able to contribute to a defensive line that has struggled to create much of any backfield penetration the past two seasons.

2016 Outlook

Lamin should be eager to get his final season of collegiate eligibility underway and make a major impact up front for the Gamecock D. He enters 2016 listed at 35 lbs lighter than he was in 2015 and given his maturity, he should earn a decent amount of attention from Coach Robinson and Thompson once Fall camp commences. If he’s able to earn some early playing time and make an impact, he could find himself himself in the regular rotation, if not as an eventual stater up front as the season progresses. A healthy and contributing Lamin should mean good things for Gamecocks.

Food for thought

Lamin was high on the Florida Gators recruiting list when he was coming out of Fort Scott and was recruited by former South Carolina and Florida assistant Brad Lawing, who is now with Florida St., under the guidance of then Gator and current Gamecock head man Will Muschamp. You’ve got to believe he’s got some untapped potential somewhere inside of him.
