Did Will Muschamp send a message by leaving Perry Orth off of SEC Media Days roster? Let’s speculate!

Because it’s offseason and all.

One of the interesting things we noted from the SEC Media Days roster, which was released today, was the fact that there were only three quarterbacks among the players slated to attend: Ole Miss’s Chad Kelly, Texas A&M’s Trevor Knight and Tennessee’s Joshua Dobbs.

Defensive lineman Marquavius Lewis, wideout Deebo Samuel and offensive lineman Mason Zandi got the call for South Carolina. Not on the list: redshirt senior South Carolina QB Perry Orth.

It probably means absolutely nothing. Then again, could it mean something? (!!!)

Will Muschamp’s made no secret of the fact that he wants to find a quarterback that will set the team up for success, regardless of experience. He’s stated that Orth and freshman Brandon McIlwain are in front of the pack right now. Orth, for his part, was decent, but far from great last year under center – having said that, it seems a little curious to not see your veteran QB make the trip over to Hoover. That obviously means Brandon McIlwain’s starting!*

Or, perhaps Muschamp’s playing it close to the vest and wants to avoid fans making any assumptions about who will start at quarterback on September 1. (Oops) Still, as a returnee, and a redshirt senior at that, Orth would still be a strong representative – and that wouldn’t necessarily mean that he would get the gig. (Granted, a quarterback didn’t go last year, either.)

Again, Perry Orth being left out probably means absolutely nothing. Then again, it could speak volumes about where Muschamp thinks he is right now in the quarterback race as it stands right now. Let the #fun #offseason #speculation begin!

*–we seriously don’t know…this statement is satirical in nature.

Cal football underdogs to San Diego State, Texas, Stanford, UCLA in early lines

John Hefti-USA TODAY Sports

Early Vegas lines were released!

Cal is underdogs in all the games mentioned.

A quick look at all the early lines.

Cal 5.5 point underdogs to San Diego State. This is the whopper of all the lines. The Aztecs being nearly touchdown favorites at home seems a bit extreme at this moment, but I guess the Bears are a bit of an unknown commodity at this point.

Cal 2.5 point underdogs to Texas. That Cal is a bigger underdog to San Diego State rather than Texas gives you an idea as to how weird the state of all these programs is right now.

Cal 12.5 point underdogs to Stanford. So Vegas at this point thinks Stanford is still going to be very very good. I’m not quite buying that yet, but 12.5 point seems like a bit. The Bears have been beaten by three scores or more the last three meetings against Stanford, but things should change at home, right?

Cal 7.5 point underdogs to UCLA. This is about the fairest of all the lines. Cal is probably ten points worse than UCLA on paper, but you have to account for not only Cal’s homefield advantage but the inability for the Bruins to ever play well in Memorial.

What are your thoughts on all the early lines?

Conference reveals Texas Big 12 Media Day attendees

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Strong will take four seniors with him to Dallas.

One of the last major landmark events before fall camp begins for the Texas Longhorns in early August looms less than two weeks away — the Big 12 Media Days in Dallas — and the conference revealed the attendees from each school on Wednesday.

With only 13 scholarship seniors on the roster for the Longhorns, there’s unquestionably a youth movement afoot in Austin, but head coach Charlie Strong will take four of those seniors with him.

Unsurprisingly, quarterback Tyrone Swoopes isn’t on the list and neither are the two other players still competing for the starting job:

  • Tight end Caleb Bluiett
  • Offensive tackle Kent Perkins
  • Defensive tackle Paul Boyette, Jr.
  • Safety Dylan Haines

TCU is the only other school in the conference that will not bring a quarterback to the event.

The Media Days will run from Monday, July 18 to Tuesday, July 19. The Longhorns will meet the press on the second day.

Jeremy Sprinkle Named to Mackey Award Watch List

Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

Its watch list season, and the honors are starting to come in for Bret Bielema’s guys.

Along with Deatrich Wise’s addition to the Bednarik Award watch list, sure-handed tight end Jeremy Sprinkle is on the watch list for the Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end.

He’ll be stepping into some pretty big shoes following Hunter Henry’s departure to the NFL and the San Diego Chargers. But it’s not like Sprinkle hasn’t done this before. He finished the final seven games of last season with six scores. Those six touchdowns were good for ninth in the nation.

He’s made some big catches in his career, too. Sprinkle was on the receiving end of Brandon Allen’s hold-your-breath two-point conversion pass in the third overtime against Auburn, and also caught three touchdown passes in the shootout against Mississippi State.

Sprinkle has definitely earned this. He’s improved each of his first three seasons, and is now the go-to guy at tight end – and we everyone knows Bielema likes him some tight ends. And not every day do you see a school have a Mackey Award winner one season then have another nominated for the award the next, but Arkansas is creating a monster at the position.

The Razorbacks are, after all, the only program in the nation with multiple Mackey Award winners – D.J. Williams (2010), Hunter Henry (2015).

Oh, and Jeremy Sprinkle is open in the flat again. Shocker.

The Dudes Strike Back 2016: Get To Know #92 DT Kevin Cohee

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

DudesStrikeBack

Name: Kevin Cohee

Position: Defensive Line

Number: #92

Year: Sophomore

Height: 6-foot-2

Weight: 257 lbs.

Hometown: West Roxbury, MA

High School: Roxbury Latin

2013 Stats (HS): Twice earned All-Independent School League honors…twice served as team captain…registered 20 tackles, including one sack, and two interceptions…recorded one interception returned for a touchdown…played for head coach Patrick Ross…also excelled on the lacrosse field. (bceagles.com)

2014 Stats: Redshirted

2015 Stats: Played in the first two games of the season on special teams.

2016 Projections: Cohee is listed as a defensive tackle on the official BC roster, at first I thought he was a little undersized, but he fits the profile of DT’s BC recruited under Don Brown. Most of the DT’s hover around that 260 pound frame. Ray Smith is probably going to be the starter this year next to Truman Gutapfel, but there is a going to be a void on the two deep that Cohee could find a spot on.

How’d He Get Here: Recruited by both Frank Leonard and Kevin Lempa, Cohee chose Boston College over a bevy of northeast programs. Also in the mix were Connecticut, Rutgers, and UMass. NC State also gave him a sniff. UConn gave Cohee his first offer before he ever visited BC, but he waited out the whole process before selecting the Eagles.

Twitter Feed: N/A

Uniform History: #92 isn’t exactly a well-worn digit, but the names who did bring back some memories. Steve Jiordano wore the number as a tight end in the 70s, and Nick Gianackos wore it during the Dan Henning era. The most recent to don 92 was Dillon Quinn.

The South Carolina Gamecocks set their SEC Media Day reps

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images

Looks like Marquavius Lewis, Deebo Samuel, and Mason Zandi will be accompanying Will Muschamp to the 2016 SEC Media Days

The South Carolina Gamecocks have their SEC Media Day reps for 2016. Marquavius Lewis, Deebo Samuel and Mason Zandi will be going with Will Muschamp to SEC Media Days in Hoover, Alabama. SEC Media Days runs from July 11th – July 14th and the Gamecocks are set to meet with the media on the morning of the 14th.

Both Deebo Samuel and Marquavius Lewis will be depended on to anchor their respective positions. Deebo, who came in as a promising recruit, had his 2015 season largely cut short due to injury. He still had his moments (another one) when he was healthy, though. Marquavius Lewis, who finished the 2015 season with 3 sacks (here’s one of them), was largely a disappointment after coming in with much fanfare (although I think most people would agree that can be attributed to Deke Adams). Lewis will be expected to make a significant step forward to lead the Gamecock defensive line in 2016.

Mason Zandi, a returning starter on the offensive line, will be the third member of the USC player contingent in Hoover. Zandi will be looked at as one of the anchors for a fairly young Gamecock offensive line.

USC Trojans Football Recruiting: Latest details on the class of 2017

That latest USC Trojans recruiting notes.

Commitments

Erik Krommenhoek has comitted to USC. Krommenhoek is a Three-star Tight End from Monte Vista High School. Listed at 6-5 and around 240 pounds, Krommenhoek will come into USC with a great frame to develop and help the Trojans offense with run blocking as well as pass catching ability. Tight ends in Tee Martin’s offense tend to have some very crucial blocking assignments in many run schemes and will occasionally stay in to block on some pass plays. Blocking is certainly one of Krommenhoek’s strengths and he should be able to help the Trojan offense in this aspect. He has also displayed good hands on film and will need to work on his route running in college, but Krommenhoek has the potential to be a dual threat tight end.

New Offers

Defensive end My-King Johnson has received an offer from USC. After a good showing at USC camp, the 6-4, 235 pound athletic end from Tempe high school in Arizona picked up his fourth Pac-12 scholarship offer. Johnson is a pass rush specialist. At the high school level, he relies on his length and athleticism to get to the quarterback. If Johnson commits to USC, defensive line coach Kenechi Udeze would have a raw athlete who he could mold into a very good all around defensive end. Johnson should have the ability to add different pass rush moves to his arsenal, however he does need to improve on his leverage as he tends to play too high.

Other notes

Three-Star Cornerback Jaylan Shaw of Centennial High School in Corona, CA has narrowed down his list to four schools, USC being included. Shaw also lists Boise State, Washington State, and UCLA in his top four. Shaw has good size listed at 5-11. He is a long strider and has long arms which will help him in press coverage. He also has fluid hips which gives him crisp change of direction and can cover a lot of ground which gives him some position versatility.

Four-Star Cornerback Thomas Graham released his top 10 list and USC is still in the running. After being previously committed, Graham decided to re-open his recruiting process a few months ago after lack of communication between he and the coaching staff. Graham is rated as the number 5 corner in the country and number 8 overall recruit in the state of California. At 5-11 Graham is another lengthy athlete with range and would be an outstanding signing for Clay Helton. If he decides to go elsewhere though, it would be a big disappointment considering he was already previously committed and has family ties to the school. His sister, Jasmyne, is a track and field athlete at USC.

Cal football quarterback Davis Webb named to Maxwell Award Watch List

Okay then.

Davis Webb just arrived on campus a month ago, and Cal fans are pretty excited about him. You know who else is excited? The national media! Despite not playing a single snap for the Bears, college football writers have Webb making the preseason watch lists.

Webb was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List as the potential college player of the year in 2016. Given the nature of this award, I don’t think this is the last watch list he will end up making.

A graduate transfer from the Red Raiders, Webb will have one year of eligibility with the Bears. He’ll join a crowded quarterback competition that includes Chase Forrest, Zach Kline, Ross Bowers, and Max Gilliam. Webb has had plenty of experience in the Air Raid in Lubbock, and should be right on equal footing with the rest of the competition, but it’s starting to sound more and more like he’s the favorite to win this job outright.

Webb is the second straight Cal quarterback to make the watch list, joining Jared Goff.

An excerpt form the full press release below.

Cal senior quarterback Davis Webb was named Tuesday to the 80th annual Maxwell Award Watch List for the honor given annually to the nation’s College Player of the Year since 1937. The award is named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell for his extensive contributions to the game including time as a player, sportswriter and official.

Webb is a graduate transfer who received his bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science from Texas Tech in May of 2016 in his first season at Cal. He was previously on the Maxwell Award Watch List during his 2014 sophomore season with the Red Raiders and recently was the top senior quarterback for the 2017 NFL Draft by ESPN’s Mel Kiper in May.

Webb completed 459-of-747 passes (61.4%) for 5,557 yards with 46 touchdowns and 22 interceptions for a 138.4 passer efficiency rating in 23 games played and 14 starts over the last three seasons at Texas Tech from 2013-15. He ranks eighth among the school’s all-time leaders in passing touchdowns, 10th in passing yards and touchdowns responsible for (49), and 11th in passing completions, passing attempts and total offense (5,567).

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Fields, who transferred from Trinity Valley Junior College, led the nation in tackles for loss per game at 1.73 and paced the Cardinals with 11.0 sacks -€” the highest total since Marcus Smith recorded 14.5 in 2013.
