The guy that stuck the dagger into Utah fans’ hearts last year in the Oregon game, with his game winning touchdown catch, may be suiting up for the Utes this coming season. Darren Carrington was dismissed from the Oregon football program just a couple of weeks ago for a DUI, and the grad transfer was visiting the Utes just a few days ago. There have been quite a few rumors that the former Duck is likely headed to the U, including an interesting Tweet from one Mr. Tom Hackett, now with ESPN700, the flagship station of the Utes:

I have a reliable source that has told me Darren Carrington is "more than likely coming to Utah".

— Tom Hackett (@HackettESPN700) July 20, 2017

Going down the “what if” road, Carringotn, if he joins the Utes, will likely be one of the most talented, if not the most talented, wide receiver on the roster. Production wise, he was very good at UO. Carrington pulled in 112 passes, 1,919 yards and 15 touchdowns in three seasons at Oregon, and was likely going to be their No. 1 guy going into this coming season. Carrington is the type of receiver that an offense like Troy Taylor’s should play well with.

Utah has missed out on some of these high profile grad transfers in the last couple of years, most notibly Devin Lucien, who went from UCLA to ASU and had a great senior season, after visiting Utah. Hopefully, the Utes can seal the deal with this kid, assuming his off field issues are resolved, which that’s the only way he’d join the team.

What do you think, would you welcome Carrington to Utah?

Make it three of a kind for the Utes, as they are ranked No. 16 in the first College Football Playoff Poll of 2016. The Utes are also ranked 16 in both the AP and Coaches Poll. The Utes are one of a very small number of teams, and the only Pac-12 team, to be ranked in all of the College Football Playoff Polls, since the poll started.

Utah is one of four Pac-12 teams ranked, with Washington at No. 5 (WTF, Texas A&M!?!?), Colorado at No. 15, just ahead of the Utes, and Wazzu at No. 25. I think the SEC bias is real, and shows in this poll, BUT, the good news is I think it’ll sort itself out come the final selections in December.

What does this mean for the Utes? Well, it means they have an outside chance of sneaking into that final four. The No. 16 slot has proven to be a good one in the past, as that’s where Ohio State debuted two years ago, and Oklahoma debuted at 15 last year. If Utah wins out, and wins the Pac-12 Championship, they will be in the conversation as a Power 5 champion. They need Washington to keep winning and to be in that top four area when they would meet again in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Of course, some help would need to be had with some teams losing too, but I’m not sure we would see two teams from the same league get in. Previous committees have viewed the conference title games as play-in games, essentially, and it’ll be interesting to see if this current committee does the same.

What are your initial thoughts on the first CFP poll?

Utah was able to get former 2017 Washington State commit four-star El Paso (Texas) El Dorado wide receiver Tyquez Hampton. He is the fifth Utah commit in the 2017 class and the fourth from Texas. His primary recruiter is wide receiver coach Guy Holliday. Hampton also holds offers from Mississippi State and West Virginia among others.

Hampton fits the mold of a Utah wide receiver. He is big (6’ 2” 208) and physical. He does not shy away from contact and knows how to high-point the football. He is also a great blocker, which is an essential skill for a wide receiver to have at Utah.

Hampton visited Utah for the game against USC, and it sounds like his experience on his official visit played a big part in his decision to flip to Utah. He took his official for the same game as Utah 2017 quarterback commit Jason Shelley.

Academics were also a big factor. Utah’s medical school and high APR scores were both reasons he cited for his commitment.

When you’re down three or four running backs, you need all the help you can get, and fortunately for Utah they could turn to a familiar name. After the BYU game, Utah running back Joe Williams hung them up, citing the physical and mental exhaustion from the game. Four weeks later, and three running back down, Utah has their original starting running back returning as Joe returned to practice today for the Utes.

Jon La Follette (former Block U contributor and current ESPN 700 producer) tweeted out that Joe is day by day, but could play on Saturday. He also stated that the team/coaches reached out to Joe first, after consulting with the team, and that he’s back for the full season and the team has his full support. (Check out Jon’s Twitter timeline for more twitter.com/espn700jon)

What does this mean? First, it means that Utah is getting some much needed running back depth, but their are some questions that come along with Joe’s return. Does he have the passion and energy to return? I’m guessing so, or else why return? Can he fix his ball security issues? Williams has fumbled in all but one game that he’s started (4 of 5). Also, how in shape is he? Being a month out, he can’t be too bad, but it’ll be interesting to see. Lastly, where would he fall in the depth chart? Of course, that will depend on Zack Moss and Troy McCormick’s health. Moss is probable for this game against OSU and McCormick (per Jon from Dennis Erickson) isn’t far behind.

There’s no doubt that he’s a very talented running back, and shouldered a great load last year when Devontae Booker went down, the hope for Utah fans and coaches are if he can recapture that talent. Williams told our Alex this fall that he wanted to be a 1500 yard back, and I believe he has that kind of ability (of course not in 6 games).

If Joe can come back to the team and be a contributor, and help this team win the Pac-12 South, this would make for a great redemption story. Joe’s a great young man, and I’m hoping he comes back how we all expected him to at the beginning of the season.

What are your thoughts on Joe’s return?

I have always been a fan of annual Blackout game. The transition from red helmets to black helmets was a welcome addition in 2012. Utah then introduced the oversized chrome drum and feather logo I 2014. I honestly did not think they could improved on that design, but I was wrong. The helmets really are fantastic and worthy of receiving accolades. Here is to hoping we see them again this season (my hope is the new black helmet with the throwback jersey and black pants).

The University of Utah announced today that senior wide receiver Cory Butler-Byrd has been partially reinstated by head coach Kyle Whittingham effective immediately. What does partially reinstated mean? Well, he is allowed to participate in team activities and practice, but he has not been cleared to return to games.

Butler-Byrd was suspended indefinitely for misdemeanor criminal mischief charges stemming from an incident where he vandalized a police station and car. This news comes one day after Butler-Byrd announced a guilty plea in abeyance, per Kyle Goon of the Salt Lake Tribune. Below is the official definition of a guilty plea in abeyance from the Utah code:

77-2a-1 Definitions

For the purposes of this chapter:

(1) "Plea in abeyance" means an order by a court, upon motion of the prosecution and the defendant, accepting a plea of guilty or of no contest from the defendant but not, at that time, entering judgment of conviction against him nor imposing sentence upon him on condition that he comply with specific conditions as set forth in a plea in abeyance agreement. (2) "Plea in abeyance agreement" means an agreement entered into between the prosecution and the defendant setting forth the specific terms and conditions upon which, following acceptance of the agreement by the court, a plea may be held in abeyance.

According to Goon, Butler-Byrd will have his charges dismissed if he pays restitution of $1,691.50 for the damage he caused, does not have any other criminal offenses in the next year, and obtains mental health counseling. Butler-Byrd would face a prison sentence of up to one year if he fails to meet the terms of his plea deal.

Utah senior wide receiver Cory Butler-Byrd has been charged with criminal mischief, a class A misdemeanor, first reported by Kyle Goon along with Matthew Piper of the Salt Lake Tribune. This charge could carry a jail sentence of up to one year. Butler-Byrd was previously indefinitely suspended by Utah football head coach Kyle Whittingham for "personal issues." Prior to his suspension, Butler-Byrd was expected to compete for a starting role at slot receiver and kickoff returner.

According to Goon, the following events transpired leading to Butler-Byrd’s arrest. Butler-Byrd damaged the roof and shattered the back windo of a University Police car and threw a piece of wood through a police station window, shattering it. Butler-Byrd reportedly admitted to causing all of this damage, the cost of which is expected to exceed $500. He will appear in court on Sept. 13.

We will continue to keep you updated on this story if any new developments come to light.

Ah You laid out 12 criteria that he would use to pick a school. His approach to his recruitment seems very mature and well thought out. He is not just concerned about football when he picks a school but also life after school/football.

Ah You is a physical defender and can deliver a big hit on receivers in the open field or a running back running the football. I like Ah You’s physicality and athleticism. He would be a great fit in Utah’s defense if they can land him.

Replacing arguable the best back in Utah football history is a tall task for the crew that will line up in the backfield in 2016, but make no mistake about it, the running backs that Utah has are very talented. I don't foresee any of these guys having the slippery-ness that Booker had, but they each bring something different to the table, which is why we'll probably see more of a running back by committee approach this season.

The likely starter will be Joe Williams, who took over as starter once Booker went down with his knee injury last season. His profile says he's the fastest returning Utah, running a 4.35 40, so he has a little more top end speed than Booker. Last season, he appeared in 10 games, and started the last three (UCLA, Colorado and BYU). He racked up 477 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season, with 399 of those coming in those last three games. The senior doesn't have the ability to hit the hole quite look Booker, which few do, but he has proven he can carry the ball as a work horse, but that's not what we'll probably see from him this season

Getting plenty of reps will be Troy McCormick, the electrifying back coming off of a torn ACL last spring. The junior from Katy, Texas, gave fans a glimpse of his abilities in the 2014 Las Vegas Bowl against Colorado State, when he rushed for 86 yards on five carries. McCormick is dangerous in the open field, and is hard to tackle. Coaches had big plans for him last season before the knee injury, and are very excited to have him back going into the upcoming season. You'll likely see McCormick lining up all over the field, in the back field, the slot, wide, just to utilize his receiving capabilities. You'll hopefully see him and Williams on the field at the same time through out the season.

Utah also has some young freshmen on the team that could see some action and contribute. First is Marcel Manalo, a red shirt freshman who missed last season after a gun shot injury sidelined him. He played very well during the spring, and raised a lot of eyebrows with his production. He proved hard to bring down, and was able to pick up some tough yards. A just 5-11and 220 pounds, he's a bit of a battering ram, but may see some situations on the field this fall.

Another young one to keep an eye on is Zack Moss. One of the Hallandale three along with QB Tyler Huntley and WR Demari Simpkins, Moss was one that Utah had to fight for. Tennessee and Miami (who he committed too prior to Utah) came hot and heavy after Moss before signing day. If you follow Moss on Twitter, you've seen he is an impressive young man, with a college ready body. Although he wasn't on campus for spring, coaches went after him with the intent of him playing early. He's got a little bit of Booker in him, with some of his ability to change direction and to break through tackles. Now we'll have to see if he can translate that to the college level, but fans should be excited for this kid.

Utah's got some really good depth at running back, and fans shouldn't see too much of a drop from Booker to this crew, but I don't know if we'll see the highlights that Booker provided us, because he was just so special. However, with this returning offensive line, and with as much talent as Utah has in the backfield, we should see a potent running game to help a first year starting QB get comfortable.

NFL training camps open this week for all 32 NFL teams. With this in mind, it seems like a good time to take a look at Utah alumni that are currently playing in the NFL. Just this week two more Utes joined the NFL ranks as Kendal Thompson signed as a receiver with Washington and Jason Whittingham joined Minnesota. Kyle Whittingham has done a great job of producing NFL talent since taking over as head coach in 2005 as evidenced by the 32 former Utah players currently on NFL rosters.

Here is the complete list:

Certainly this list will narrow as NFL training camp progresses and cuts are made, however 32 players currently on an active roster is pretty impressive and puts Utah firmly in the upper half of the Pac-12 conference in producing NFL talent. Below is a table of how many players are currently on and NFL roster from each Pac-12 school with BYU and Utah State thrown in for fun.

School

Players on NFL Roster

USC

48

Cal

40

Stanford

37

Oregon

36

Utah

32

UCLA

30

Oregon State

26

Washington

26

Arizona State

24

Utah State

17

BYU

15

Arizona

15

Colorado

12

Washington State

10

It's interesting to see how well each of these schools produces NFL talent. Predictably USC, Stanford Oregon are near the top. It's a little surprising to see Cal at no. 2 since they always seem to under achieve. Oregon State is also fairly high on the list given their recent history. Utah State ranks ahead of three Pac-12 schools and BYU in putting players into the NFL.

Getting back to Utah, there are a few big names that will get the most attention. Alex Smith has proven himself as a very good NFL quarterback and is in his 12th NFL season. Steve Smith is one of the all time great receivers in NFL history. He was supposed to retire after last season before suffering a season ending injury midway through the season causing him to return for one last hurrah. He is in his 16th season and will being playing his third in Baltimore. Eric Weddle will be joining Smith in Baltimore this season after playing his first nine seasons in San Diego.

In addition to these vets, Devontae Booker will be watched closely as he tries to win the starting running back position with the Denver Broncos. So far he has impressed John Elway and the Broncos coaching staff with his competitive nature and performance in minicamp.

Finally, if you are picking your NFL team based on how many former Utes play for them, you have to go with Carolina. The Panthers have five former Utes, more than any other NFL team. The Browns, Ravens, 49ers and Broncos aren't far behind with three each.

With opening on NFL camps, football is officially back! College camps will begin next week and in a few short week Utah will be kicking off the 2016 season against Southern Utah at Rice-Eccles on September 1st.

It is getting to be that time of year when preseason predictions come out for overall record, conference champions, preseason rankings, and preseason All-Americans. Phil Steele is generally considered the most accurate with his preseason predictions. He released his list of preseason All-Americans and All-Conference players. He has two Utah football players on his preseason All-American teams: senior kicker Andy Phillips (first-team) and junior defensive tackle Lowell Lotulelei (second team). Steele also has Phillips as the preseason Special Teams Player of the Year.

Steele's preseason all-Pac-12 teams were filled with even more Utah football players: junior defensive end Kylie Fitts, Lotulelei, and Phillips were all named to the first team. Senior offensive guard Isaac Asiata, senior offensive tackle J.J. Dielman, senior defensive end Hunter Dimick, senior snapper Chase Dominguez, and junior safety Marcus Williams were all tabbed as second team selections. Athlon also released their preseason all-Pac-12 teams. Utah players were better represented on Athlon's first team than Steele's with Dielman, Fitts, Lotulelei, Phillips, and Williams all being named first-team all-conference. On the second team, Athlon had Asiata and Dimick.

Athlon Sports released a ranking of every college football team for the 2016 season, and they have the Utah football team at No. 32. Alabama tops their list, followed by Florida State, Ohio State, Clemson, Michigan, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Notre Dame, LSU, and Ole Miss in the top 10 (notice the lack of any Pac-12 team). Washington at No. 11 is their highest rated Pac-12 team, followed by Stanford (No. 12), UCLA (No. 14), USC (No. 22), Oregon (No. 23), WSU (No. 30), Utah (No. 32), Cal (No. 44), Arizona State (No. 46), Arizona (No. 50), Colorado (No. 61), and Oregon State (No. 90). As is often the case with preseason rankings, some teams are ranked about right, while some are too high and others are too low.

Who does Athlon have too high?

Despite being a Washington Huskies fan, I think No. 11 and atop the Pac-12 is too high. Yes, I think UW will be a lot better this year and will likely finish in the top 25, but they are still a young team and have not beaten the elite teams in the North (only defeating Stanford once in 2012 and failing Oregon every year since the conference expanded to 12 teams). I think both of the LA schools are overrated. UCLA returns Josh Rosen at quarterback, but most of his favorite targets are gone. The Bruins overall only return 11 starters. USC brings back a lot of starters (15), but they have serious questions on the defensive line and have to replace a three-year starter at quarterback in Cody Kessler. USC also will have to face one of if not the toughest schedules in the nation, meaning the losses could pile up for the Trojans. Oregon proved to be two different teams in 2015: they were excellent with Vernon Adams Jr. and struggled mightily without him. Adams Jr. is not back in 2016, nor is Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year defensive end DeForest Buckner. Oregon gets a lot of talent back at the skill positions (including running back Royce Freeman), but they only return 11 starters overall. Arizona State has to totally rebuild their secondary in 2016. They only return 10 starters (tied for the lowest in the Pac-12). The Sun Devils have a lot of talent returning at running back, but they have to replace their starting quarterback and three of their top four pass catchers. Like Arizona State, Cal returns only 10 starters. They lose 2016 NFL Draft No. 1 pick quarterback Jared Goff and their top six wide receivers, which is not good for a team that runs the "Bear Raid" offense. Former Texas Tech quarterback Davis Webb will help ease the loss of Goff, but Cal has a lot of other holes to fill around him.

Who does Athlon have too low?

Athlon only has Arizona at No. 50, but the Wildcats return 16 starters (the second-most in the Pac-12). Arizona struggled defensively last season, but a new defensive staff, led by former Boise State defensive coordinator Marcel Yates, that gets nine starters back could work wonders for Arizona's defense. Oregon State struggled mightily in 2015, but the good news for 2016 is there is no room to go but up (as they finished 0-9 in the Pac-12 in 2015).The Beavers get 14 starters back. Utah State transfer quarterback Darrell Garretson will also help OSU improve. Gary Andersen has had success everywhere he has coached, so I am sure he will turn the Beavers around. The Beavers may still finish in the Pac-12 cellar, but they will likely be better than the No. 90 team in the country.

What about Utah?

While I would not be surprised to see Utah finish the season higher than No. 32, I think it is appropriate for a preseason ranking. Utah enters 2016 with quite a few question marks. They have consistently fielded one of the poorest passing attacks in the Pac-12, and they lose their starting quarterback, backup quarterback, and top three receiving yardage leaders from 2015 (Britain Covey to a mission and Kenneth Scott and Devontae Booker to graduation). Their offense was centered around Booker in 2014 and 2015. Booker is off to the NFL to play for the Denver Broncos, and Utah will need to find a way to replace him, as the offense struggled mightily after he suffered an injury against Arizona towards the end of the 2015 season. Utah also loses all three starting linebackers from 2015. In spring football, Utah's offensive line was not as strong as most expected. Utah does bring back a lot of talent in the secondary and defensive line. The Utes should once again field an excellent defense, the biggest questions are about the offense. If the offense struggles in 2016, Utah could finish in the middle of the Pac-12, but if Utah shows improvement on the offense, they could win the Pac-12 South.

What do you think of Athlon's rankings of Utah and the Pac-12?

South Point Casino released their over/under win totals for all 128 FBS teams, and they have the Utah Utes at 7.5 wins for the 2016 season (remember that this win total does not include a bowl game, it is only for the regular season). This is a great article if you want to learn more on sports betting. Of teams in the Pac-12 South, only UCLA (8.5) is projected to win more games than the Utes. USC, who likely will face the toughest schedule of any college football team in 2016 is also projected to win 7.5 games. Arizona (6), Arizona State (5), and Colorado (4.5) are all projected to win fewer games than the Utes.

7.5 wins may seem low for a team that has won 17 regular season games that last two seasons. Utah is often underrated in the preseason (as evidenced by the last two seasons where Utah started outside the top 25 and finished in the top 20). Utah is not without concerns this offseason. They have to replace most of their offensive production, highlighted by running back Devontae Booker and four-year starting quarterback Travis Wilson. They also lose all three starting linebackers on defense. With these question marks and an offense that has underachieved since Utah joined the Pac-12, it makes sense why Vegas may have some hesitation about the Utes.

What do you think of Utah's over/under? Would you take the over or the under? Sound off in the comments below.

FOOTBALL NEWS IN JUNE! I don't know about you, but I'm salivating for any news when it comes to football. Fortunately, today we got tossed a bone with some kick off time announcements, so now we can fantasize about tailgating before a game this fall, and when we can start tailgating. Five game times have been announced for games this fall, including the first four of the season.

Utah will kick off the season on Thursday, September 1 at 6 pm against SUU on the Pac-12 Network. Utah will then host the rivalry game 10 games later at 5:30 pm on FOX. I don't know if a rivalry has ever been broadcast on FOX, so that'll be a little interesting, plus it's an afternoon game. In week three, the Utes will travel to San Jose for a 8:30 pm kick off. Hopefully we won't have many of these 8:30 or later kick offs. A big one the next week is on the books as Utah takes on USC at 7 pm at Rice-Eccles. Later in the season, Utah will play ASU in Tempe at 7:30 pm on a Thursday.

The rest of the games will be picked about a week in advance, as has been the norm.

Here's the full release from the U.
