NC State suffered its first significant bout of attrition since early September during the Wolfpack’s loss to Notre Dame last weekend. Defensive linemen Darian Roseboro, Justin Jones, and Eurndraus Bryant were all banged up early, as was running back Nyheim Hines, who got rolled up and was lucky to escape without major injury.

All of those players appear likely to return this week against Clemson, at least based on what Dave Doeren had to say on Wednesday. They all practiced; Hines and Bryant were kept out of contact drills, but both sound probable for the Clemson game, NC State’s current biggest game of the week of the year.

Hines’ injury was frightening at first look, since he had a leg and ankle dragged at an awkward angle from behind by a Notre Dame defender. Hines was immediately taken to the locker room for x-rays, which proved negative, but he did not return to the game, depriving State of one of its biggest weapons for the remaining 2+ quarters against Notre Dame.

The attrition up front was also significant, particularly with Jones and Big E unable to fill their typical roles in the middle of the defense.

State’s gonna need everybody ready to go this weekend against Clemson to pull off an upset, so let’s hope that’s what we’ve got, and this is not just Dave Doeren being optimistic for optimism’s sake. Below are Doeren’s full remarks from the ACC Wednesday teleconference.

-----------—

DAVE DOEREN: Looking forward to Homecoming Game, a chance to play a great Clemson football team, and two teams fighting for first place in the division. So a ton to play for and guys have really done a great job preparing and working hard in practice. Obviously got a few more days here to polish things up.

But they are a very good team, explosive offense, balanced offense. They are the No. 1 defense in the ACC in almost every category.

So a great challenge for us with our team, and as we look at the last game we played, we know we can play better. And losing some key players during the game didn't help, but we still had some opportune moments and some critical errors that cost us at key moments.

All big games come down to one or two or three plays, so it's going to be a game where those plays have got to go our way, and it's our job as coaches to get them there and their job to finish them, and looking forward to watching it happen.

Q. How would you compare the Lamar Jackson you faced this year to the one you faced a year ago?DAVE

DOEREN: Lamar Jackson?

Q. Yes.

DAVE DOEREN: Okay. We don't play Louisville this week.

Q. Okay. Do you care to look back at that game at all?

DAVE DOEREN: He's a great player.

Q. Obviously you had to deal with that formidable Notre Dame running game last week. What do you want to do better with the run defense as you get ready for a good Clemson running game?

DAVE DOEREN: First thing you've got to do is fit the run game the right way. We had a couple misfits, guys in the wrong gap and something we haven't done. We've been very good at that. You've got to play with low pads, inside hands, shed blocks and leverage the ball on tackle and that's what rushing defense is and that's at all positions, because they can make it a DB tackle with a correct block and guys got have to disciplined eyes so they can strike and play aggressive in the running game.

As far as the Notre Dame game, they did a great job. They have a great offensive line; and when we lost three defensive players on the defensive line during that game, our rotation hurt us as the game went on.

So hopefully we'll be healthier. We were able to get all three three of those guys in practice today, so that was a very positive thing for our rotation up front.

Q. Anything you're looking to do better when it comes to your running game as you get ready for that stout Clemson defense?

DAVE DOEREN: They make it hard. They have got a really good front. They have got big people and rotate and active linebackers and big safeties.

For us, it's about being on our tracks and being thick and our contact and running our feet and passing off movements well, because they do a good job defensively, you know, with their blitz packages and line movements. They are going to get heavy on you and try to flatten you out when they play their odd front. The O-Line has to communicate well together and tight ends and running backs and see the plays that are there to make and go get them.

Q. Kelly Bryant for them as a bigger role in the run game. How does that make it more challenging to defend this type of Clemson offense?

DAVE DOEREN: Yeah, he has, I think 30 more carries than their tailback, and maybe it's 50, than the other tailback. He's without a doubt a threat. Not just when they design it but when they drop back and he scrambles.

Similar to when we play Louisville and other quarterbacks; Syracuse. Our D-Line has to be disciplined. We can't just run past and open up an escape lane. We have to power the pocket and press it, and when we blitz we've got to be in our rush lanes and not create seams for him to escape through; and if it's inside pressure, we have to have guys that are containing it outside and understand how we work together in pass rush because that's really important against an athletic guy like Kelly.

Q. You mentioned getting everybody back in practice today. If everybody is able to play, even though they might still be a little bit banged up, do you feel like your rotation will be back to the way you want it to be in this game?

DAVE DOEREN: If they are all back, yes. We've been able to double-train some guys, too. So it's something that we can do if we have to.

But Justin Jones was 100 percent today. He looked great, during practice, the whole practice. Eurndraus Bryant was out and we didn't do as much with him because at nose tackle there's not a ton he has to do. He did his individual work and we'll rest him. I think we'll have them all and they will be feeling really good on game day. We'll be back to being able to play eight or nine guys in the front.

Q. Obviously Ryan has had a great year and maybe last week was maybe sub-par for him, he threw a pick-six and the completion percentage wasn't really there. Against a great team like Clemson, how important is it for him to get back to mistake-free football?

DAVE DOEREN: Well, I mean, any time you play in a big game, every rep matters, not just for the quarterback. But Ryan's done a great job throughout the season. It was a tough day to be a throwing quarterback out there. It was in the 30s temperature-wise and the wind was blowing. It's not an ideal place to throw.

So I think being home and having the weather will help him. You know, second part of it's just learning from his errors and continuing to improve, and I think that's something Ryan does well. He really studies himself. He'll use that as an opportunity to be a better player.

Q. What was his week of preparation like facing back-to-back maybe his two toughest defenses all year?

DAVE DOEREN: He's had a great week of prep, and he understands what Coach Drinkwitz wants, and he has played against this defense before, so he has an idea what to expect.

They do a great job in man coverage and they mix it a lot. There's a lot of different looks that they are going to give you and they disguise and they have got an active front. They have got 31 sacks. So our timing and our protection is going to be important.

Q. Trying to get an updates on Hines. How did he look in practice today?

DAVE DOEREN: He was running around, feeling really good. We didn't hit him. So that part, we'll still have to see. But he was full speed and he was flying around the field. So we're excited that his progression has been what we hoped it would be, and tomorrow we'll continue to do more. We're still three days out, so the recovery will continue.

Q. Do you feel like he can still be as explosive Saturday as he's been before the injury?

DAVE DOEREN: Yeah, I think by the time we get to Saturday, unless we have a setback, I feel real confident about it. I know he did coming off the field today. Just those things, you've got to continue to get through the hurdles you face on any injury, and you go block a sled or you hit a moving linebacker and you get put in a weird position, and then the next play you feel fine.

Some of that's mental for those guys. You get tackled and rolled up and you pop up and you're good. You've got to get through those things in the game. Progression-wise, he's doing really well so far in the recovery.

Following a decisive victory over Louisville on Thursday night, NC State moved up four spots in both the AP and Coaches polls. (They always tend to mirror each other, probably since half of the coaches in the coaches poll have graduate assistants submitting ballots for them.)

If NC State takes care of these next two weeks, I don’t think there’s any question that State will be ranked in the top 15 when it welcomes Clemson to town on Nov. 4. THAT would be fun, wouldn’t it. But I guess it’s probably best not to get too far ahead of myself here.

The Wolfpack will be a heavy favorite at Pitt and Notre Dame is legit and will be playing at home. But we can approach these bridges when we arrive at them. (Wait I think I messed up that cliche.)

For now we can just enjoy things, with no pressure, and also did you guys see where UNC is 1-5.

Will Richardson is returning to his starting spot at right tackle this weekend after serving a two-game suspension, and that’s very good news for an NC State offense in need of a boost to its ground game. Injured cornerback Mike Stevens is also back on the two-deep this week, though it is unclear exactly how much time on the field he’ll see.

As Dave Doeren explained during his Monday press conference, Stevens hasn’t gone through a full week of practice yet this season and practiced only one day last week. They’re being cautious, but Stevens probably isn’t completely healthy yet, either.

Those are both positive developments, but could we have a game without bad news? Heavens no. Reserve corner James Valdez hurt his knee in the fourth quarter of the Marshall game and will sit out the Furman contest, as will safety Dexter Wright. The football gods are being extremely unhelpful right now.

It’s been a mere two days since the news that two NC State football players had been kicked off the team while three others had been suspended for their presence at a July party that involved drugs and alcohol. Dave Doeren is clearly already tired of this crap, given his attitude during a brief Q-and-A session with media members after practice Wednesday. (Video’s in the N&O story there.)

Like snide sarcasm-level over-it. After Joe Giglio asks him about the gap between when NC State learned of the players’ transgressions (Aug. 8) and when the announcement of punishment was made public (Aug. 22), he bristles a bit, though that is a good question. I had been wondering the same myself.

Then he walks away, reminding the reporters that oh by the way, the game is in 10 days and none of the five guys in potential legal trouble are going to play. Which, yeah, Dave, we know.

This is a pet peeve of mine, coaches reacting in a defensive manner once some bad off-the-field news breaks and people have questions about said bad news. It’s their job to face the bad and the good; that’s why they are paid the big bucks. Answering some fair questions about an incident that damages the image of your program should be an understood part of the gig, but too many coaches get antsy when they get taken outside of their comfort level.

And I know it’s no fun to have to face questions like these, especially not this close to the season, but being dismissive in a this-is-a-waste-of-time sort of way is not constructive, and it’s not a good look, either.

Bambard has kicked himself out of a job.

There is one significant change to NC State’s depth chart heading into Syracuse, and it isn’t a surprising one. Graduate transfer Connor Haskins is once again the starting place kicker, replacing struggling sophomore Kyle Bambard.

Haskins replaced Bambard in the Florida State game and made both of his field goal attempts. Those were his first attempts since he went 0-2 against East Carolina and lost the job in the process.

Bambard missed his lone field goal try against the Seminoles, and has missed four of his last five field goal attempts, dating back to his 1-4 performance at Clemson. He is only 2-6 this season on field goals between 30 and 39 yards, which is simply not good enough.

There is little evidence to suggest Haskins can be more consistent, but he can hardly be worse, and should have a little more confidence after knocking home a couple of chip shots against the Noles. And he will be kicking in a dome this weekend.

If you’re wondering who’ll be the starting quarterback, alas, you’ll have to keep wondering.

NC State’s depth chart is out, though it doesn’t tease which player will start at quarterback against William & Mary next Thursday. Jalan McClendon and Boise State graduate transfer Ryan Finley are listed as co-starters. Jakobi Meyers, who has been slowed by injury, does not appear to be a significant factor in the QB battle at this point.

Here is the full depth chart, via GoPack.com, which also has a handy breakdown of each position group.

Of note:

— Ryan Finley has been reclassified as a redshirt sophomore and has three years of eligibility remaining. The NCAA granted Finley a medical hardship waiver because he missed the bulk of 2015 with an injury. This is how you end up with the extremely rare case of a grad transfer with three more years of eligibility.

Both Finley and McClendon will play against W&M, unless something changes between now and then.

— Johnny Frasier is listed as fourth-string running back, which is a surprise considering the praise he earned as a scout player last fall. But the three guys ahead of him have real game experience, and he doesn’t. His spot on the depth chart could be an indictment of his conditioning, or he may be slower to grasp the new offense than his peers. (He does have a reputation as a bit of a loafer.)

— Thaddeus Moss is not a fullback, and neither is Jaylen Samuels. It’s better to think of that as the “move” tight end spot, as Dave Doeren would call it, and picture Moss filling a role similar to Samuels’. Doeren has said that Moss can play both TE spots—that includes the Y spot led by Cole Cook.

— The first-string offensive line has pretty much been set for a couple weeks. There is talent but a lot inexperience behind the first five, which is what warrants keeping an eye on. State’s going to need a rotation of some kind, and that’s without addressing any injuries. It’s also interesting (and encouraging or alarming, depending on how you want to frame it) that walk-on Peter Daniel is the second-string right tackle.

— Yep, Kelvin Harmon is going to see the field quite a bit this year. Hope he’s ready because we’re going to need the help.

— No decision has been made between Kyle Bambard and Connor Haskins at placekicker. AJ Cole and Jackson Maples will be handling the punting and kickoff duties, respectively.

— The defensive line is absolutely loaded, and most of these guys should be back in 2017. Big Eurndraus Bryant had a good fall camp and if he’s ready for a breakout campaign, this unit can be really really good.

— No surprises at linebacker or corner, and it will be crucial for State to stay healthy at those positions.

Hey, no sweat, man.

I go back an forth about how I feel about this season, from excitement for the challenge ahead to sheer terror for the challenge ahead. It ain’t about to be an easy year, but I also feel like this team has a better chance to surprise than any of Dave Doeren’s prior Wolfpack teams. (After the completely dull 2015 season, I’ve talked myself into this idea.)

They’ll have plenty of opportunities to do that, with five opponents in the AP top 25 to begin the season, and three of them in the top 10. Miami just missed the cut, finishing 26th in the voting. I guess the good news is that these six games are split evenly between home and road. We have enough of a hill to climb with a lopsided number of these upset bids having to come on the road.

My plea this offseason is the same as it was two years ago: please, please let our starting quarterback be good. Give me that and I should be able to mostly be at peace with what happens this year.

Back in early June we got a preliminary assessment of the 2016 NC State football team from Vegas, but now that we’re close to the start of the season, has much changed? Well ... no, not really. Oddsmakers still see the Wolfpack as basically a six-win team.

These are the odds recently published by Bovada:

2016 Regular Season Wins - North Carolina State Wolfpack

Over 6½ (+150, 3/2)

Under 6½ (-190, 10/19)

And based on that, the oddsmakers find it far more likely that State will finish under 6.5 wins, which, y’know, is not unfair. Since seven wins will require a significant upset in addition to a blemish-free run through William & Mary, ECU, Old Dominion, Wake Forest, Syracuse, and Boston College. Dammit, why am I talking about this, this is not helping me maintain the appropriate level of excessive offseason optimism.

Sorry about bringing up reality, everyone. Please continue your standard offseason business.

The red light was on Tuesday afternoon as Washington D.C. wide receiver Max Fisher announced his verbal commitment to the Wolfpack. Fisher, who is a three-star recruit, is the third wide receiver to join NC State’s 2017 recruiting class.

And Fisher is another guy who will bring some size to the position, which State desperately needs. He’s listed at 6’3 and about 190 pounds by the various recruiting services. He holds scholarship offers from Indiana, Boston College, Wake Forest, UConn, and Temple, plus like half of the MAC.

In his highlights, he displays good hands and decent footwork, and he made some tough catches in traffic. (Which was a good thing for his quarterback.)

In essence, football is basically organized pushin’. That guy’s pushing, that other guy there is pushing, that fellow on the other side of the field is pushing. Everybody’s constantly pushing each other around the field. So it follows that to be successful, you need to be the pusher more often than the pushee.

B.J. Hill knows a little something about that, as he is coming off an impressive sophomore season in which he recorded 50 tackles, 11 of those for a loss. Already a large and strong human, he appears to have gotten even stronger this offseason.

I'm up to something pic.twitter.com/DmoT6ZcvTg

That’s a lot of weight. That’s like benching three of me. Or roughly 12,000 McNuggets. (And after spending time actually calculating that number, I feel somewhat disappointed that pounds is the standard for weightlifting benchmarks, and not McNuggets. How many McNuggets ya bench, bro?)

Anyway, Hill is just one of several members of the Wolfpack football team showing off impressive weightlifting numbers, as ESPN’s Andrea Adelson explained on Twitter this afternoon:

NC State returns eight starters on defense and should be led by its front seven, bigger and stronger than any group Dave Doeren has had with the Wolfpack. Seven players power cleaned over 350 pounds during the offseason: defensive ends James Smith-Williams, Kentavius Street and Bradley Chubb, along with defensive tackles Justin Jones, Eurndraus Bryant, B.J. Hill and Monty Nelson. When Doeren arrived four years ago, he only had one player hit that mark.

Let’s hope this helps lead the defense to a better season, because between the unknown QB situation and the schedule, the defense has to be better. Maybe these guys, what with their improved strength and therefore improved pushing skills, can simply sack the quarterback on every play. Boy that would really help out a lot.

Friday night was a big one for NC State, which landed a trio of verbal commitments, all of them from outside of NC. Wide receiver Antoine Thompson of Plant City, FL, is the headliner of the three and immediately became the highest-rated player in the Pack’s 2017 class.

Thompson, a high three-star, is listed at 6’1 and 176 pounds by 247Sports. He has an impressive offer sheet that includes Miami, Wisconsin, Louisville, Arizona, Penn State, and Mississippi State. Thompson was an outstanding playmaker as a junior, racking up 692 receiving yards on only 30 receptions. He also plays defensive back.

State also picked up commitments from a couple of linebackers: Nick Smith of Orlando, FL, and Isaiah Moore, of Chesterfield, VA. Both are consensus three-star prospects. Smith holds offers from numerous power-five schools, including Nebraska, UNC, Maryland, Louisville, and Arizona. NC State appears to be the only power-five offer so far for Moore.

Rivals ranks State’s current 13-member recruiting class 30th nationally, while 247 places it at No. 32 overall and sixth in the ACC.

NC State has the ninth-best odds of winning the ACC football title this season, according to Bovada. Not surprisingly, five of the eight teams given better odds reside in the Coastal Division. Clemson and Florida State run one-two, and of course both teams are in the Atlantic Division.

Unless! (*checks ACC’s website*) ... darn it.

Bovada also has odds for each division title, with the Wolfpack ending up exactly where you guessed:

NCAA Football 2016 Season - Odds to win the ACC Atlantic Division

Clemson 10/11

Florida State 5/4

Louisville 6/1

NC State 14/1

Boston College 40/1

Syracuse 50/1

Wake Forest 50/1

As usual, the Florida State-Clemson game lines up as the de facto Atlantic title game. That one is in Tallahassee this year.

NCAA Football 2016 Season - Odds to win the ACC Coastal Division

Miami 3/2

Pittsburgh 3/1

Virginia Tech 3/1

North Carolina 17/4

Georgia Tech 10/1

Duke 20/1

Virginia 40/1

You’d think that at some point fans, media, and oddsmakers would get to a “you’re gonna have to prove it to me” point with Miami, but no, apparently not. The Hurricanes probably still have, top to bottom, the best talent in this division, but yeah so what, man. They’ve still yet to ever win this division, and I’m not sure Mark Richt is capable of getting them over the hump in his first season, though I would welcome this development because Miami is not UNC.

NCAA Football 2016 Season - Odds to win the ACC Championship

NC State has become much more creative with its uniforms since Dave Doeren arrived, and that’s been more than welcome. On Wednesday night, the school unveiled the football team’s latest alternates: a throwback to the diamond logo era that spanned the Dick Sheridan and Mike O’Cain tenures.

Oct. 8 is the 50th anniversary of NC State’s first game at Carter-Finley. That also happens to be the weekend that Notre Dame comes to town. Safe to say that game is going to be festive. And maybe a little surreal seeing the diamond back on the uniform.

That'll be the only game these threads make an appearance, I assume. I mean unless NC State wins that game; then the Pack will have to wear those uniforms at home the rest of the year.

It’s a solid, clean look, though I’ve always wanted to see State bring back the helmets it wore during the mid-to-late 1960s. Well, there’s always the 100-year anniversary.

ESPN's Andrea Adelson wrote about the pattern of quarterbacks transferring into Dave Doeren's program at NC State, and while I find parts of that piece a bit hasty in their assumptions ("has the quarterback development system broken down under Doeren?"), it does raise some questions that are worth fleshing out.

Let me first back up a second. If you missed the news, NC State added former Boise State quarterback Ryan Finley last week. Finley, who played for new Wolfpack OC Eli Drinkwitz, is a graduate transfer who can play immediately. Does that raise some eyebrows when it comes to NC State's quarterback situation? Yes, yes it does.

But that also might be reading too much into a move involving two parties who are familiar with each other. It'll be a while before we get clarity on that one. No doubt Finley wants to play, and maybe he is better than Jalan McClendon or Jakobi Meyers, but this doesn't have the same feel of alarm that 2013 did.

Doeren inherited a bad roster with a laughably thin quarterback unit. I mean, Pete Thomas was clearly the best quarterback on the team, and when he realized that sports participant Manny Stocker was theoretically his only option at QB2, he may have endured several minor strokes.

Hence the desperate grab for Brandon Mitchell--also not much of a quarterback--and Jacoby Brissett, who at least could sustain a decent offense after 2013. That year State just needed to find a guy who knew which way was forward. (Remember to throw the ball forward, kids, unless the play called specifies otherwise. Fundamentals.)

The Mitchell gamble was worth it, but it didn't pay off, partially because Mitchell's season was derailed by injury, but mostly because he was not experienced or talented enough to step in and succeed. He had never been the primary starter at quarterback in college before, and he'd even spent some time at wide receiver. Didn't work out in Raleigh. So it goes.

That doesn't alter the fact that Mitchell's addition, along with the various other stabs at graduate transfers, was absolutely necessary for establishing a very basic level of functional depth at quarterback. This time around, it's not like that. This is the healthiest quarterback situation Doeren's had at NC State.

So Finley is the third transfer QB Doeren has brought in over the span of 3+ years at State. Is this too many transfer QBs, though, and is that a problem in the larger picture? Thing is, Doeren's tenure is still fairly young, at least from a development standpoint, so it's difficult to call into question the staff's efforts there when we haven't really had a chance to see the results yet.

McClendon and Meyers are still underclassmen, and that aside, who knows how much the staff might have helped Brissett get better? There's plenty of room for development with transfers, too.

Then again, former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Canada wasn't replaced just because his offensive style left Doeren wanting. And this is where pattern can become perception, because you can bet other coaches are gonna take every theoretical inch they can while out recruiting.

Adelson is absolutely right that State needs to show it can develop good quarterbacks, else that knock may become a problem in recruiting, whether or not it's a fair criticism of Doeren's staff. And NC State might prove it can develop its own quarterbacks as soon as this fall, making the whole deal moot. It doesn't take much to shift perception into your favor.

On the field, the questions are simpler. Jacoby Brissett helped NC State win a lot more games. His addition made tons of sense and paid dividends. Ryan Finley's trajectory might end up going similarly, and whatever moves help you on Saturdays don't have to matter much anywhere else. Certainly most fans aren't gonna care.

To borrow a line from the esteemed Reverend Tim Lovejoy: when it comes to the topic of transfer quarterbacks being a problem for Dave Doeren, the short answer is "yes" with an "if" and the long answer is "no" with a "but."
