Well that’s one way to start out a class. Shamar Nash, a Memphis native and the No. 203 prospect in the class of 2019 (No. 114 per Rivals), announced his commitment to Mizzou on Thursday morning.

Nash, who recently transferred to IMG Academy in Bradenton (Fla.) took unofficial visits to a number of SEC schools in recent weeks — Arkansas, Ole Miss, Tennessee — and boasted offers from Auburn, Florida, and South Carolina as well. But he took a shine to Mizzou a while back and secured his Tiger reservation pretty quickly.

Nash is listed at 6’2, 190 pounds, and as his highlight film makes pretty clear, he was faster than anyone trying to cover him last year.

A year at IMG should introduce him to stiffer competition, and theoretically an early commitment of this stature could lead to this year’s commitment list growing a little more quickly than last year’s. We’ll see. Regardless, WELCOME, SHAMAR.

Perhaps, we’ve always been this way, but as technology has improved we’ve gotten more and more impatient as people. I remember as a kid, when my mom came home with our first computer. That thing was probably powered by a hamster wheel, but it was ours and it connected us to the rest of the world so I didn’t care.

Those were simple times. Now if my YouTube video doesn’t load up instantly, I’m about ready to throw my phone across the room. Don’t let Netflix buffer during the middle of an important scene—I might call Spectrum and cancel my cable service immediately (yes, I’m one of the few dinosaurs that still subscribes to cable). We don’t wait for anything anymore. We want everything fast and instantly.

Sports rarely work that way. Granted, I’m in the same boat as many of you. This Missouri season was incredibly frustrating to watch early on, and I maybe possibly have myself been guilty:

Ok. Alright. Chalk it up to me being a fan. But suddenly, miraculously, something has changed with Mizzou football. Maybe it was the schedule opening up, or the bye week coming at the right time, or the return of AJ Logan, but there is suddenly hope for this team.

This is what we expected to see for most of the year: an offense that can score from just about anywhere on the field, and an improving defense. This team has a legitimate shot to make a bowl game. Missouri is a 10-point favorite at home against Tennessee in what should be an incredibly fun weekend in Columbia. They can do it. I believe again, as should many of you. It’s going to be a fun November to track.

Missouri did what you are supposed to do last week: Florida was down, and Missouri kept them there. The Tigers broke Florida’s spirit and coasted down the stretch.

Can Missouri keep it up against further SEC competition? We will see. The expectation for the 2017 team was always to make a bowl game, and they’ve chosen a weird path, but it’s still very much possible. That’s a real sign of the progress for Odom and his staff.

Everybody makes a bowl game. There are forty bowl games. But given their start, making a bowl would show real fight and cohesion that I didn’t think they had earlier this season. It would’ve been very easy for Missouri to hold its head down and go through the motions of the rest of the season. It’s clear that they haven’t.

Barry Odom had gotten a Kim Anderson label, and to some extent it was earned. I didn’t like the post-game rant after the Auburn game. To me, it reeked of desperation from a man who felt his dream job was slipping away.

But Kim Anderson teams never showed the sign that Odom’s squad did this past Saturday. You were always waiting for Kim to give you some sign that he could be the solution and not part of the problem, and that sign never arrived.

For the first time this season, there’s some hope with this Missouri team, a feeling that your preseason expectations will be proven right. You couldn’t ask for a much better closing stretch of SEC games. Missouri’s bowl hopes are right there for the taking.

Gary Pinkel was 37-35 in his first six seasons at Missouri heading into 2007, with just one bowl win under his belt. Things didn’t just happen overnight, it took time and patience—maybe more time than people thought and maybe more patience than people had—but it eventually happened.

Barry Odom is probably not Gary Pinkel, but less than two seasons wasn’t enough time to show us that. A bowl game appearance will calm everyone down, fans can exhale a little bit, and there will be some momentum going into next season. And Odom would have earned it during college football’s most important month.

"Those who win in November will be remembered" was Pinkel’s favorite saying. We are three weeks away from seeing if Barry Odom can live up to that quote.

One of the larger areas of concern for Missouri heading into 2017 was the situation at cornerback, where the Tigers had to replace both starters (Aarion Penton and John Gibson) and returned only one player (Logan Cheadle) with significant experience.

Back in June, I named two sophomore corners (DeMarkus Acy and Christian Holmes) among Missouri’s most important players. It is now just Acy. Head coach Barry Odom revealed that Holmes recently suffered a shoulder injury and will miss much or all of the 2017 season after undergoing surgery on it.

This technically has no impact on the starting lineup; by most indications, Cheadle had an excellent fall camp and was appearing likely to start opposite Acy. But Holmes was an obvious No. 3 on the list and was likely to see significant playing time. It is a serious blow to depth at the position.

Missouri also had junior Finis Stribling IV and redshirt freshman Jerod Alton at the position, along with true freshmen Terry Petry and Adam Sparks. Both Petry and Sparks are listed under 175 pounds (Sparks is 172, Petry 160) and might need to add strength before becoming regulars in the SEC.

It’s also possible that 6’1, 190-pound senior Anthony Hines could move back from safety to corner. Sophomore T.J. Warren might be another candidate, though he has bulked up (he’s listed at 5’11, 210) and moved to the nickel linebacker position.

Holmes is a true sophomore, so he will take a redshirt and will have three years of eligibility remaining. His future is still bright, but now all eyes are on other youngsters to see who can step up.

In other injury news, junior slot receiver Richaud Floyd remains in concussion protocol, senior tailback Ish Witter has a mild hamstring injury, junior Nate Strong is recovering from a knee injury, and freshman tight end Logan Christopherson has an ankle injury, which means a likely redshirt for him.

Oregon State commit Isaiah Miller is scheduled to come to town next weekend.

Isaiah Miller is a three-star running back from Baldwin High School in Jacksonville (Fla.). Miller committed to Oregon State back in June, but that hasn’t stopped the running back from taking multiple official visits. He has accumulated offers from Washington, Washington State, Syracuse, Rutgers, and USF, among others, and according to Andrew Nemec of The Oregonian and 247Sports, he plans on visiting Syracuse, Southern Miss, Rutgers, and Missouri.

Regarding his status as a future Beaver, however: "I'm pretty solid," Miller told Nemec. "I'm still going to take my officials and see everything for myself."

Perry’s recruitment has been increasing recently — he’s picked up offers from Cincinnati, Portland State, Missouri, and Washington State in a matter of weeks.

Joe Jon Finley visited Perry on November 29, and the athlete received an offer from Missouri the next day.

On Tuesday evening, Missouri head coach Barry Odom confirmed what had been suspected since the Tigers’ frustrating loss to Middle Tennessee: Linebacker Michael Scherer and defensive tackle Terry Beckner Jr. each tore their ACLs. Scherer tore his MCL as well.

The Missouri defense has been a massive disappointment in 2016, but Scherer was a bright spot. He had recorded 39.0 tackles (25 solo, 28 assisted), 3.5 tackles for loss, half a sack, an interception, and two pass breakups. His recent move to weakside linebacker appeared to create a bit more of a play-making presence for Mizzou. He was hurt very early in the MTSU game, and it was assumed at the time that the injury was a season- and career-ender.

The middle of the season can be the cruelest. Unless a senior gets hurt within the first few games of the season (and has his Ts crossed and Is dotted), any play can be the last of his career. Scherer went from bright spot to tragic figure in an instant.

Beckner, meanwhile, had only recently begun to show flashes of his freshman form. His 2015 season ended three games early when he tore up his knee in the win over BYU. Even while working his way back into top form, he was the Mizzou defensive line’s leading tackler with 20.0 (16 solo, eight assists), two for a loss. This means the former blue-chipper will have ended up missing about one-third of his first two seasons in uniform to knee injuries.

Terry Beckner Jr.

This confirmation means more opportunities for linebackers like Joey Burkett, Brandon Lee, Eric Beisel, and Trey Baldwin and a potential spot for freshman Markell Utsey in the rotation at tackle.

I guess the only good news is that starting cornerback John Gibson, who also left the MTSU game with a knee injury, didn’t tear anything. He practiced with the team today.

News, notes and quotes from Missouri’s Monday press conference on 9/12.

Fresh off a five-catch, 115-yard, two total touchdown performance during Mizzou’s win over Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Johnathon Johnson returned to class Monday morning.

He received a text from one of the coaches to be on the lookout for an announcement regarding the SEC Freshman of the Week honor. Five minutes later, he checked Twitter and found his good news. Johnson was named the conference’s Freshman of the Week. Though it’s a positive and vindicating for his talents on Saturday, he views it as a small step forward.

“It was kind of a goal,” Johnson said. “I don’t just think too much of it.

“I’m looking forward to like becoming a Freshman All-American.”

Johnson only had one catch for six yards the week before at West Virginia. Before Saturday’s victory against the Eagles, he said he felt different during the day, but didn’t exactly know what made him feel that way.

“I guess something clicked like, ‘It’s time to go,’” Johnson said.

On his electrifying punt return, the coaches wanted him to fall on the football after he initially muffed it. Instead, Johnson trusted his abilities and was able to make a couple defenders miss on a juke move and blazed his way across the field en route to a 52-yard touchdown return, which was the Tigers’ first since Marcus Murphy took it to the house against Florida in 2014.

Though Johnson didn’t have much reaction to his award, Barry Odom brought it up in his opening statement to the media Monday.

“I’m happy for him and excited for our team to have that recognition,” Odom said. “I felt like last year he could have played for us but had the ankle injury, so seeing him come back and do some of the things that he’s already started to do this season, provides a great opportunity to our team.”

Johnson’s explosiveness has earned him the right to potentially start against Georgia this Saturday. Once again he’s listed as an “OR” starter along with Chris Black and Ray Wingo.

Speaking of Wingo, who also had a breakout performance Saturday, Johnson said that Wingo is faster than him and isn’t going to bother racing him to prove it.

“I wouldn’t race him,” Johnson said. “Before I hurt my ankle I would.

“I just always think I’m slow.”

Lock’s jersey is clean

It’s probably a good idea to wash it anyway before the next game, but there shouldn’t be any bits of turf in Drew Lock’s jersey.

Through two games, Lock has only been hit once. That’s impressive considering the offensive line had a total of three starts returning. The line has gelled together and has done a good job of protecting its quarterback.

So much so that Lock has been taking the unit out to dinner every Sunday. Last night, he took the line to Cheddar’s which, according to Paul Adams, has really good catfish. Lock said the total bill was “in the hundreds.” Though expensive, it’s clear that there’s a good relationship between Lock and his line. That only adds to the pride the line takes in protecting him.

“He’s reading defenses and his pocket awareness has improved,” Odom said. “There is a calm about him.”

Being able to drop back and make all of the throws is an obvious reason why he feels so calm.

A wiser player

Lock didn’t have a great game against Georgia last season. Well, no one on the offense really did. To be fair, that was his first start on the road and there’s not too many more raucous environments than Between the Hedges in Athens, Georgia.

He’s thought about that October night and acknowledges that he wasn’t at the best of his abilities then, but thinks the tough experience has prepared him to face the Bulldogs again this year.

“I was 18 playing at Athens with an offense I didn’t necessarily know,” Lock said. “This year, I’m only a year older but it feels like I’m a lot older.

“It was an eye-opener for me, which I needed it. I’ve said so many times that I’m glad that it could have happened last year so I can learn from it this year.”

450 yards and five touchdowns isn’t totally out of the question, but that kind of success will likely be more of a challenge to achieve this week. But coming off a near-record setting week, for Lock, there couldn’t be a better time to play one of the better teams in the SEC than right now.

Barry Odom stepped to the podium Monday for his first media day as Missouri’s head coach. He thanked the media for its coverage of his team throughout fall camp and spoke about the emotions that would inevitably run through his head on Saturday against West Virginia.

He doesn’t plan on giving into those emotions. Not doing so will allow him to effectively do his job.

“I’ve got one shot at this,” Odom said. “A lot of people are counting on me to get it right.”

Feeling a little anxious for Saturday, Odom received a comforting visit from former coach Gary Pinkel. Odom wanted to pick his brain but Pinkel asked him a few questions as well. One question was what does Odom want his demeanor to be like come game time. Odom was able to answer.

“I’ve got to be me,” Odom said. “I need to be in control of the game but I’ve got to be myself.”

What that entails is showing a little bit of emotion. After being the defensive play caller from up in the box last year, he “might throw a few fist pumps” when he’s on the sidelines.

Though he was integral in the defense’s success a year ago, he’s allowing new defensive coordinator DeMontie Cross and co-coordinator Ryan Walters leeway with their duties. Same goes for offensive coordinator Josh Heupel.

“They don’t need me looking over their shoulder,” Odom said.

In addition to the game-to-game and week-to-week responsibilities, Odom envisions a big future for Missouri. There are two recruiting hot beds in his state, and when he combines that along with the hard work he asks of his players, Odom believes the sky is the limit.

“I think we got a championship-caliber program here,” Odom said.

He understands that it might not become that this year, but maintains that if his team is working to leave the program in a better place on a day-to-day basis, that can be accomplished.

Speaking of this year and this week, rather, few have picked Missouri to beat West Virginia on Saturday or to have a lot of success this fall. That might irritate some fans, but being the underdog is something that Odom welcomes and embraces.

“Yeah, I’ll be honest, I really like it,” Odom said. “I like the opportunity to prove people wrong.”

Odom has his first chance to do so on Saturday.

Missouri reveals its depth

Finally.

A public depth chart is now available for the Mizzou football team. There were a few surprises, but one that didn’t come as a shock was that Drew Lock will be the Tigers’ starting quarterback this Saturday.

Lock had been preparing like he would be the starter, so it didn’t come as much of a surprise for him.

“I truly believed I would be, just from the beginning of all this,” Lock said. “I made my stand last year to become the starting quarterback, I truly thought that I was out here competing in camp as the top guy, and that’s how I always thought it would be.”

Lock has yet to turn 20, but perhaps the biggest jump in his skillset has been his overall leadership. He’s not acting like one of the younger guys on the team, which played a big part in why Odom ultimately went with Lock to be his quarterback.

Must Reads

“We feel like Drew is experienced from last year,” Odom said. “His leadership skills are one of the best on the team.”

It sounds as if that solidifies him as the starter for the whole year, but Odom alluded to backup quarterback Marvin Zanders getting some time if he need be.

“Marvin has proven himself that he’s going to help us win football games,” Odom said.

Other changes that raised some eyebrows were at wide receiver. I figured a J’Mon Moore-Chris Black-Emanuel Hall look after Nate Brown went down with his ankle injury, but redshirt freshman Johnathon Johnson has secured a spot with the No. 1’s.

Johnson had a terrific fall camp last season and was all but a lock to see the field as a true freshman, but an ankle injury on a big play during a scrimmage sidelined him for the year. He’s clearly viewed as a big time playmaker, but I thought he’d be rotated in behind Black. Odom didn’t hide his excitement on what Johnson brings to the table.

“I may be most excited about Johnathon Johnson,” Odom said. “He’s embraced the opportunity to compete every day.”

Walking-on to #DLineZOU

Jordan Harold had to take a leap of faith to get to Missouri last fall. After spending a year in the program, it certainly has paid off so far. Not literally, as he has yet to be rewarded with a scholarship, but he will now find himself running with the first team on Saturday.

“That’s everything that I’ve been working for,” Harold said. “It was realistic to me at the time, but I’m here and it means the world to me.”

This shows that Harold isn’t a typical walk-on. He wasn’t handed the job because of a lack of depth. He earned it. Even without Freshman All-American Walter Brady, the Tigers still had Marcell Frazier, who started some games last year, a potential breakout star in Nate Howard and perhaps the gem of the 2016 class in Tre Williams. Harold beat out all of them. And he’ll have plenty of chances to earn his opponents’ respect starting opposite of Charles Harris.

“I think it’s about time,” Harris said of Harold winning the job. “That’s just his own hard work. He’s been working his butt off the entire year.”

An efficient, oft-injured slot receiver at Alabama, Black has one last chance to stay healthy and prove himself.

Chris Black

6’0, 192, Sr.

Jacksonville, FL

2015: 4 targets, 2 catches (50%), 23 yards (5.8 per target)

2014: 18 targets, 15 catches (83%), 188 yards (10.4 per target)

2013: 8 targets, 8 catches (100%), 79 yards (9.9 per target), 2 TD

davidcmorrison: Chris Black’s utility to an unproven Missouri receiving corps breaks down into three categories: hands, routes and YAC.

The hands part...I’ve heard mixed things. And, for the waterbug-type slot guys who make their living among headhunting linebackers, safeties and nickelbacks, hearing footsteps is an ever-present danger. Routes, he should be golden. He’s played in the slot for three seasons at one of the nation’s marquee programs and picked up a thing or two along the way.

Those first two aspects combine into one blanket term: precision. You need precision in your slot passing game, above all else. Missouri completed only 47 percent of its passes to slot receivers last year. Imprecise.

The third, YAC, is something the Tigers haven’t had since, really, L’Damian Washington. Jimmie Hunt showed spurts of that open-field elusiveness and ability to outrun a defense, but never consistently enough to be one of those game-changing slot receivers.

If Black happens to run a route short of the sticks on third down, can he manufacture his way past them? Does he have enough elusiveness still, after his ankle issues, to gain separation on underneath routes or make chicken salad out of chicken ... doody? ... when his exterior blocking breaks down on swings and screens, as it often will?

Oscar Gamble: I’m really not sure what to expect from Chris Black. I get that he was a former four-star wide receiver from Alabama, but he struggled with ankle injuries (tweaking it again during the spring) and never really demonstrated durability or production. Plus, how many college teams will be asking as much from their slot receiver as the Tigers will of the redshirt senior?

I think Black’s biggest impact will be how he allows the other receivers to fit into their more natural roles and how he becomes a reliable release valve for Drew Lock. He has a dogged work ethic that I think offers a strong role model for the rest of this young corps.

I have heard he can struggle with routine catches so that’s something I’m going to evaluate during fall camp.

Pboggs: Black fills a huge void for Mizzou. With Heupel’s fast-paced offense, Mizzou will need receivers capable of blocking out defenders and competing for the ball just like Black can.

This highlight versus West Virginia shows how well Black can fit in with Heupel’s offense. As he catches the ball he is aware of the first down line, gets hit and moves the ball north. This is something Mizzou’s offense was not able to do last year.

[embedded content]

Drew Lock’s confidence should rise with the addition of Black. The big question still remains, can Chris Black stay healthy?

TheRonDavis: One more year is all that Chris Black has left to make an impact. Black was a very highly-touted receiver coming out of high school but never maximized his full potential at Alabama.

Black joins a group of receivers at Missouri who have yet to break out. There are a lot of young guys on the roster, and at the very minimum, Black can at least show them how it’s done at the highest of levels. He’s been a part of a championship team, and he’s played in BCS bowl games and nationally-televised, big games.

That’s his minimum contribution. He’s a starting receiver who has experience. That can bode very well for Drew Lock, who desperately needs someone to step up as “the guy” at receiver. “The guy” doesn’t have to lead the team in yards or touchdowns, but he has to be reliable when Lock is in trouble. I think Black is a starter in Week 1, and I think his greatest impact for the Tigers will be behind-the-scenes, teaching the younger receivers.

Sam Snelling: Can Black stay healthy? He’s certainly shown he’s got the talent to be the kind of impact receiver Missouri needs, but it’s hard to get excited about a guy who’s spent most of his career watching football instead of playing football.

It’s nice for Missouri to pick up experience in a guy who has been a part of a program like Alabama, but he wasn’t exactly tearing it up, so I’ll call my levels of excitement “reserved” on Black staying healthy long enough to make a real impact.

Bill C.: Without immediately knowing anything about the defensive pressure he was dealing with, I have to say I'm excited about Chris Black for one simple reason: In three years at Alabama, he caught 25 of 30 passes. That's an 83 percent catch rate, basically what you hope for out of a running back and just about perfect for a slot receiver. He averaged only 11.6 yards per catch in that span, but that still works out to 9.7 yards per target. That'll play.

Black will obviously be the focus of more defensive attention in Columbia, however. If Nate Brown, J'Mon Moore, and company aren't experiencing some sort of slight breakthrough on the outside, then opponents will be able to corral him pretty easily. The slot is usually more of a complement than a go-to guy, but my hope for this offense is based in part on the simple presence of an efficiency guy of any kind. Mizzou had zero last year. Now it has at least one.

As long as he's healthy. (Sensing a theme there?)

Reports have surfaced that Missouri’s next athletic director will be San Diego State’s Jim Sterk. The 60-year old has been in charge at SDSU since 2010.

From Sterk’s SDSU bio:

In terms of competitive success, San Diego State continues to set itself apart, compiling the fourth-highest combined winning percentage in the country in football and men's basketball since the beginning of the 2010-11 season at 75.2 percent (182-60). In addition, SDSU is one of four schools nationally to have appeared in six consecutive NCAA tournaments and have its football team play in five straight bowl games. [...]

Sterk came to SDSU from Washington State University, where he served as athletic director since 2000. Prior to his hiring at WSU, he was the AD at Portland State University from 1995 to 2000.

Sterk also has a solid reputation and the respect of his peers across the country. The NCAA recognized him in 2006 as the Division IA Athletic Directors' "Program of Excellence." He oversaw a period of unparalleled success at Washington State with historic accomplishments both on and off the field.

Since serving as associate athletic director at Seattle Pacific (1990-91) and Tulane (1991-95), Sterk has been an AD for 20 years, first at Portland State (1995-2000), then Wazzu (2000-10), and finally SDSU (2010-present).

From a June piece in the San Diego Union-Tribune:

In March, Sterk filled out a group of four named Division I ADs of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Two months later, he landed a spot on the powerful men’s basketball committee that guides the cash-soaked NCAA Tournament.

Toss in the fact that basketball and football are thriving in tandem — Fisher’s team has drawn 72 consecutive sellouts and football, a winner of 10 straight, is being whispered among Top 25 teams this season — and the momentum is obvious.

The pair of popular sports, which represents the front porch of major-college athletics, has built the third-best combined winning percentage in the country (75.2) since Sterk arrived.

Major sport hires are obviously only part of an athletic director’s story, but here is a list of the hires Sterk has made in football and men’s basketball:

Football:

Bill Doba (Wazzu, 2003-07): 30-29, one bowl bid

Paul Wulff (Wazzu, 2008-11): 9-40

Rocky Long (SDSU, 2011-present): 43-23, six straight bowls (2015 MWC title)

Basketball:

Ritchie McKay (PSU, 1996-98): 24-29

Joel Sobotka (PSU, 1998-02): 53-59

Dick Bennett (Wazzu, 2003-06): 36-49

Tony Bennett (Wazzu, 2006-09): 69-33, two NCAA tourney appearances (one Sweet 16)

Ken Bone (Wazzu, 2009-14): 80-86

Sterk oversaw Portland State’s transition from Division II to Division I, a move that went pretty well. The Vikings went to the 1-AA football playoffs in 2000, their fifth season in their new level, and beginning in about their seventh D1 season, they began a nice run in basketball.

Sterk appears to be a well-regarded fund-raiser and a strong representative of his given school. His hiring record is not the best (the Wulff hire set Wazzu back years), but he has made at least one home run hire in each sport (Long, T. Bennett). So we’ll go with that for now. And considering what Bennett has done at Virginia, there was some impressive foresight with that hire.

We’ll learn and share more about Sterk in the coming days, but here’s to a successful tenure ... and one that is preferably longer than that of his predecessor, Mack Rhoades.

Day three of Missouri’s fall camp is in the books and while it was closed to the media, we got to hear from Missouri defensive end Black Ice aka “Charles Harris” as he interviewed freshman Tre Williams.

Harris asks Williams what his favorite pass rush move is,

“I like the bend and rip but uh... my favorite move is club swim.”

I think these two may have accidentally coined the hottest new nightclub on campus.

Charles Harris is a national treasure. Charles Harris is so good on camera he makes vanilla questions seem interesting. Charles Harris makes me excited for Missouri Football this fall.

According to the official MU Tigers website, Friday’s practice went perfectly and everything is awesome.

Following the individual drills, a spirited 7-on-7 took place on the west field while the D-Line and O-Line went 1-on-1 on the east field. Freshman WR Dimetrios Mason and junior WR J'Mon Moore each hauled in long TD passes in 7-on-7, the latter of which came on a perfect 40-yard strike from QB Drew Lock, right along the left sideline for the long score. Mason slipped past the defense on an inside post and hauled in a perfectly thrown ball by freshman QB Micah Wilson for his score.

The Tigers return Saturday to a practice that is open to the media and we’ll be on site to provide you more coverage.

The more potential breakout stars you’ve got at one position, the more likely you’ll actually have one who breaks out.

Alex Ross

6’1, 220, Sr.

Jenks, OK

2013: 3 carries, 19 yards (6.3)

2014: 88 carries, 595 yards (6.8), 4 TD; 13 targets, 10 catches, 65 yards (6.5); 23 KR, 31.2 average, 2 TD

2015: 32 carries, 172 yards (5.4), 1 TD; 30 KR, 21.5 average

Oscar Gamble: When it was announced Alex Ross would be transferring from Oklahoma as a graduate transfer, it came as a two-fold boon since Ross is regarded as a great kick return man. His five touchdowns and 786 career rushing yards weren’t too shabby either.

I haven’t seen Ross around Mizzou’s facilities yet, but if he is 6’1 and 220 pounds, that would give Josh Heupel and Cornell Ford two larger backs to lead a power-oriented rushing attack. In the depth chart I’ve been updating regularly, I have Ross listed as the starter with Nate Strong and Ish Witter behind him, but fall camp could see that change.

Sam Snelling: Ross was a huge get for Missouri in the offseason. He’s a guy who never got a ton of carries at Oklahoma but shone through in the return game. And if there are two things Missouri has available, it’s carries and return opportunities. Ross is a bigger, more straight-line runner, and I’m not sure he’s a 20 carries-per-game type, but if he can be productive in five to 10 carries and be dangerous in the return game, he could be a huge asset for Missouri this year.

TheRonDavis: Other than Drew Lock, Ross is perhaps the most important player for Mizzou this fall. He’s a dynamic return man for starters, which is something that the Tigers desperately need, and he can potentially be the feature back. He’s a bigger running back, so he can run between the tackles and break off a big run or two using his return man speed.

Using your return man as the main running back can be dangerous, as the biggest collisions usually happen on kickoffs, so it might be wise to divide up the carries across the board. But if Ross proves he can handle the workload better than any other of the 47 running backs the Tigers seem to have, he needs the majority of the carries.

Bill C.: Obviously we don’t want to go too far down the “Newcomers are going to save the day!” road — that’s usually a pretty fraught path to take. But Ross has more of a track record than most newcomers, and the fact that he was squeezed out of the rotation at OU by Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon is hardly cause for shame.

As I’ve mentioned before, Ross isn’t as efficient as you would like to see from such a big back, but the speed is undeniable. Mizzou was woefully deficient of big plays out of the backfield last year, and he could change that.

Nate Strong

6’0, 210, So.

East St. Louis, IL

Oscar Gamble: Missouri sure lucked out when Nate Strong managed to become academically eligible in July. The JUCO running back, originally from East St. Louis, certainly fills a need for a Tigers’ offense that managed just 1,385 yards and five touchdowns last year. Strong is enrolled and on campus — I saw him at Missouri’s “Night at the Zou” event. He’s a solid 6’0 and looks sturdy, so it’s easy to believe he’s 210 pounds of mostly muscle.

The question for me is Strong’s durability. He was hurt in high school and again at Hinds C.C., and he could be asked to shoulder a lot of carries this fall. Even if he splits carries with Alex Ross and Ish Witter, we don’t know how effective he can be and that’s before we mention Missouri’s rebuilt offensive line.

Sam Snelling: If there’s a newcomer who I’m over-excited to see play, it’s Strong. Missouri hasn’t had a real physical presence at running back in a while, and it’s rare that you get the strength along with the breakaway speed.

Strong was a standout at East St. Louis and was playing well in junior college before breaking his arm, so he certainly has the ability to step in and get carries right away. And even if he isn't a major contributor this season, I don’t think there are many people who don’t think he’ll be a major contributor in the future.

TheRonDavis: I am one of the biggest Natereace Strong fans. I think he’s powerful enough to run over a defender, and fast enough to run past them. Plus, he’s finally at his dream school. He busted his tail to receive his associates degree in just a year and a half to get to Columbia.

The one knock on Strong is his inability to stay healthy. He battled injuries through his high school career at East St. Louis, and he broke his arm last season at Hinds Community College (though he told me he broke it after trucking a defender -- I don’t think there’s a cooler way to break your arm). Regardless, if he stays healthy and learns the playbook, he needs to be in the mix playing this year. He’s too talented to sit on the bench.

Bill C.: It feels like Strong has been committed to Mizzou forever, and now he gets a chance to carve out a niche. A good story, that.

I think what I’m most excited about with the backfield is that no single player has to absolutely come through. Witter doesn’t have to become a feature back if he’s not ready, and if either Ross or Strong don’t pan out, that’s okay because the other one still could. (And if neither do, you’ve still got Trevon Walters, Ryan Williams, and Damarea Crockett in pocket.) Strong has everything you want in a running back, but he won’t face the same type of expectations that it seemed Chase Abbington did from the moment of his arrival.

Damarea Crockett

Oscar Gamble: Flipping Damarea Crockett - Crockett-Rocket, as I will be calling him - from Boise State back in late January was a big coup for the Tigers. He looks like a future lead back based on size and explosiveness, and it may be hard to keep him off the field this fall.

I hope Missouri is able to redshirt for two reasons - it means the RB group remains fairly healthy and successful and it gives us one more year of him down the road.

Sam Snelling: When you factor in the amount of guys who come in with good reputations all playing the same position, you begin to wonder who is the odd man out. Crockett looks big enough and appears to have the speed to be an instant-impact type of player, but will there be enough carries to go around? And will Crockett avoid the redshirt?

TheRonDavis: I wrote a couple weeks ago that Crockett is the most important freshman on Missouri’s roster. Adding Natereace Strong is a huge boost for the running backs, but Crockett can still play his way into the mix. He was one of the most highly-touted recruits of 2016, and there’s good reason for it. He’s bigger than some of the running backs that were already on campus, and, like Ross, he’s still explosive enough to run past defenders. In my opinion, Ross, Strong and Crockett have the most potential to make Mizzou’s running game great again.

Bill C.: Anybody who calls him Crockett-Rocket is fired.

Missouri's Recruiting Hot Board

We didn't really have Smith on our radar and this commitment feels pretty out of the blue. Smith joins 2018 DL Daniel Parker who committed last Sunday.

You can check out the rest of our recruiting hot board below. Obviously we don't have a very clear picture of the 2018 class but we do know some of the bigger names and attempted to slot them in.

He barely saw the field in 2015, but he could give Josh Heupel a different type of toy to play with in 2016.

Marvin Zanders

6’1, 185, So.

Jacksonville, FL

Oscar Gamble: Barry Odom has made a point to say that Marvin Zanders has looked better in practices and even mentioned him by name at Missouri’s availability at SEC Media Days a few weeks ago. It seems like a concerted effort to keep the talented play-maker invested and in Columbia.

The comparison I hear most about Zanders is a faster James Franklin or Brad Smith, neither of which should be considered negative. Being a dual-threat QB is pretty much the norm in modern college football and probably a natural fit in the type of offense new offensive coordinator Josh Heupel wants to run.

My concern about Zanders has always been about his accuracy on mid to long passes as they tend to flutter and sail. That kind of issue tends to lead to a lack of confidence from the coaches and stalled drives for the offense. Now, we’ve heard that Zanders has made strides and Missouri may use him this fall, which sounds great on paper - but in practiced has seen limited success.

davidcmorrison: The fact that coaches have even given lip service to Zanders improving and seeing the field is a big step forward for him.

In the past, Zanders discussion had been relegated to the realm of “open” quarterback competitions that were about as open to Zanders as Quinton’s is to downtown Columbia (still salty...) and a wink-nudge type deal that just maybeeeee Missouri had a little something up its sleeve to get him involved.

It did not. Unless you count three zone-read handoffs against Mississippi State that Gary Pinkel somewhat confusingly said were designed for the suspended-unsuspended-suspended Maty Mauk.

Heupel’s a new coordinator who needs to try new things in order to improve upon this offense. He’s also a coordinator that has not been shy about using multiple quarterbacks (Landry Jones and Blake Bell anyone? How about Chuckie Keeton and Kent Myers?) in the past. Couple that with the fact that, with Mauk gone, Zanders has a marketable skill that is significantly better than anyone else on the roster: his legs.

If Zanders is ever getting a chance to prove himself at Missouri, this is the year.

Sam Snelling: I’ll be honest in saying that I love a dual-threat quarterback. I loved Brad Smith, I loved James Franklin, and I loved Chase Daniel (with his underrated running ability). I think Lock is similar to Chase in that he’s an underrated athlete and will be able to use his legs more than you might expect.

But I’m excited about the prospect of seeing more of Marvin Zanders this season. His ability to breakaway from defenders is something we really haven’t seen since Smith. I don’t know how much Odom and Heupel plan on using him, but I do think it would be a great move to get him in early and get him some confidence to know that he’ll be expected to contribute.

TheRonDavis: I think Mizzou fans were begging to try something else last year. It might have been good for Lock to fight through a year of adversity, but Zanders could have made a play or two that could have at least excited the offense.

We have no idea what to expect from him in a game, but Barry Odom spoke highly of him as a quarterback at SEC Media Days. If his growth as a quarterback, not necessarily an athlete, is there, he should at least get a series or two per half. If Zanders is in the game and the defense can respect his ability to throw, that can open up endless possibilities for Odom and staff.

Bill C.: I'm still confused by those Mississippi State carries. If it was a true zone read, in which he had the option of keeping the ball, then I think he made the wrong read every time. He had room to tuck and run and did not.

Might that mean that the runs were designed to go to the running back? And if THAT's the case, then ... what the heck was he even doing in the game?

It was strange, is what I'm saying.

Zanders has been a spring game all-star a couple of different times, and if the coaches are correct that his passing and command of an offense are coming along, then that's pretty exciting. As David mentioned above, Heupel has proven willing to adapt and empty the toolbox when he's had QBs with different skill sets. Lock is almost certainly the starter, but a short-yardage or red zone package with Zanders is intriguing. If, you know, he actually tucks and runs sometimes.

I’ll confess, I got the idea for this column from my usual source for prompts, twitter:

Call your shot.

Name an up-and-coming player who you think will be a household name by the end of the college football season.

— PFF College Football (@PFF_College) July 27, 2016

It appealed to my interest in going beyond surface level discussions of the upcoming football season. I attended Mizzou’s fall camp last year and spring practices this year; admittedly with the typical media restrictions on observing practices. That gives me about as close to an "insiders" perspective as one might come across, even if I’m only standing a few feet closer to the inside than the average fan. I’ve also talked with several current and past players and through them collected some insight into some of the current roster.

For me, predicting an "up-and-coming" Missouri player to be a household name by the end of this season was simple. He needed the following criteria.

It has to be someone on Missouri’s defense since the majority of pundits and fans are already familiar with that side. Sorry Drew Lock or... ummm, J'Mon Moore?

It needs to be an athlete at a premium position - defensive line or linebacker. My rationale for this is these guys are typically on the screen the most, are tackling the ball-carrier almost every play and are in a position to record commonly understood stats - sacks, tackles, interceptions, etc. Missouri has been fortunate to have several standout players at these positions of late; Kentrell Brothers, Shane Ray, and Michael Sam all earned national recognition for their stellar play in the past few years.

It’s my opinion that Charles Harris is already known among college football writers and NFL scouts. It’s certainly the go to name-drop when they’re asked to talk about the Tigers. Perhaps he really does have a 15 sack season, earns a national award and solidifies his first round draft stock but that would feel more like validation than a surprise. Sorry Chuck.

It had to be someone who wasn’t coming off a serious injury. I just didn’t want to take the risk on a player with durability concerns. While I realize injuries are an ever-present possibility, it seemed prudent to consider history. Sorry Harold Brantley and Terry Beckner.

Finally it needs to be a someone who’s role in the defense will be emphasized. All things being equal, guys like Michael Scherer, Rickey Hatley or Marcell Frazier can probably be counted on duplicating last year’s performances.

That left me with just a few names. Sophomore defensive end Nate Howard was high on my list because he’ll be backing up Charles Harris and had the athleticism to compete as a true freshman. I ruled him out because I don’t know if he can have the requisite success from a backup role. Walter Brady quietly had a freshman All-American season last year and looks to capitalize on the focus opponents will likely put on Charles Harris. I’m concerned how Brady adjusts to a new defensive philosophy and changing responsibilities but I’ll admit he was my runner-up.

Which leaves me with just one choice. Redshirt senior linebacker Donavin Newsom.

The hybrid outside linebacker/safety role that Newsom will be playing will give him an opportunity to rush the passer and drop into coverage much like we saw from Kentrell Brothers last year. Coaches and players rave about his athleticism comparing him to Sean Weatherspoon and a blitz-heavy scheme will allow him to record the gaudy stats national pundits and fans notice.

My thought process was: Newsom is an experienced player who was under-the-radar last year due to several factors. Despite Kentrell Brothers hogging all the tackles, Newsom put up some solid stats last year.

Missouri’s offensive woes combined with the protests basically derailed all discussion of an otherwise fantastic defense but Newsom was one of the best players on one of the best defenses in the country last year. I think Newsom will take the next step and earn national recognition and possibly vault himself into a NFL draft consideration with a stellar 2016 season.
