The Michigan Wolverines got huge news tonight, as 2019 four-star offensive tackle Trente Jones committed to the program. He shared the news on his Twitter account.

Jones is the 332nd nationally ranked player and the 36th ranked offensive tackle in his class, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. He had other scholarship offers from big time schools like Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Miami (FL), Auburn, Texas A&M and more. He is listed at 6-foot-6 and 282 pounds.

This is a huge pick up for the Wolverines. After signing just one offensive lineman — perhaps two if Ryan Hayes ends up on the offensive line — in the 2018 class, offensive line was always going to be one of Michigan’s top priorities in the 2019 class. Having the commitment be from a big offensive lineman from the state of Georgia makes this commitment a huge one for Jim Harbaugh the Wolverines.

Jones is the fifth player to commit to Michigan’s 2019 class, along with five-star defensive end Chris Hinton, four-star defensive end Stephen Herron, four-star offensive lineman Nolan Rumler and three-star linebacker Charles Thomas.

They say it’s easy to have a good plan until you get hit - I guess the football equivalent of that is that it’s easy to feel confident until you lose a game. Michigan played around in September, relying on comeback performances in the second half of games to pull out respectable (enough) wins. But that formula was only going to work for so long, and it finally bit the Wolverines on Saturday.

Now, the AP and Coaches Polls have had their say. Michigan dropped ten slots to #17 in the AP Poll, and dropped nine slots to #16 in the Coaches Poll as well.

Welcome to 2017.

It’s hard to say the Wolverines don’t deserve this - in fact, Michigan fans could see the writing on the wall throughout the season leading up to this point. We’ll see if a punch to the face is what this team needs to tighten their focus and their pride and start winning on both sides of the ball.

University of Michigan wide receiver Grant Perry received full reinstatement from the Wolverines program Friday to make him eligible for the 2017 college football season.

Bryan Fischer‏ of Athlon Sports passed along the news Friday. The status update comes after Christopher Haxel of the Lansing State Journal noted in June that Perry accepted a plea agreement to drop a misdemeanor charge of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct against him.

Last week, Dan Murphy of ESPN.com reported the wide receiver was sentenced to 12 months of probation and 60 hours of community service for the remaining charges of resisting a police officer, a felony, and a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery.

The situation stems from an incident at an East Lansing bar last October.

A female accused Perry of "inappropriately touching" her while waiting in a line to enter the establishment shortly after midnight on Oct. 15. An East Lansing Police Department spokesperson said he also tried to run from police when they arrived on scene, per Haxel.

The 20-year-old Michigan native has made a limited impact with the Wolverines. He's registered 27 catches for 311 yards and two touchdowns across two seasons.

Perry will likely compete with Tarik Black, Donovan Peoples-Jones and Eddie McDoom for playing time opposite Kekoa Crawford.

Michigan comes in at 17th in ESPN FPI Projection

On Thursday, ESPN released their FPI projection of all 130 teams. The Big Ten came in the top 25 as follows:

1. Ohio State

8. Penn State

10. Wisconsin

17. Michigan

Other rankings: 29. Northwestern, 39. Iowa, 55. Minnesota, 58. Nebraska, 59. Michigan State, 61. Indiana, 72. Maryland, 84. Illinois, 88. Rutgers, 99. Purdue

Per ESPN, “The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule.”

Ohio State came in with an FPI index of 29, with No. 2 Alabama the closest at 25.9, No. 17 Michigan at 13.7.

Michigan was predicted to win 8.3 games and lose 3.7 for 2017, so somewhere between 8-4 and 9-3 overall. Last year, the FPI projected Michigan to go 11-2 and end No. 11 nationally. The Wolverines finished 10-3 and ended No. 10 in the fin AP Poll.

The Michigan coach has fired shots at plenty of people this year

It’s one of the best times of the year. Well, except for the eight degree weather and there not being much college football going on, but I digress.

2016 has been a year to forget with all our favorite celebrities dying, the Presidential Election, but most of all, Cleveland winning a championship. But one thing that has given us some comedic relief while all this nonsense is going on is Jim Harbaugh dishing out some amazing tweets.

These are not ranked in any order, but these are the five best tweets from Harbaugh’s Twitter account in 2016.

Harbaugh’s fire tweet at Jim Rome

Do you remember the provocateur who went personal with another Big 10 QB and had the tables turned on him? #déjàvu https://t.co/0GAciV74tQ

— Coach Harbaugh (@CoachJim4UM) August 17, 2016

This tweet came after Rome talked smack about the Michigan coach on his CBS radio show in the middle of August. Rome claimed Harbaugh “was already in midseason form” when he walked out of a media session when members of the media asked him about three Michigan players not being included in the team photo. Harbaugh then decided to fire back at the radio host with this tweet.

And please watch that video Harbaugh included. It makes the entire tweet hilarious.

2. 10-year-old Harbaugh

Feel like I've died & gone to heaven. Spending time with baseball's greatest player & my friend, Willie Mays. pic.twitter.com/bpASfYHCTI

— Coach Harbaugh (@CoachJim4UM) February 8, 2016

Just a man and one of his childhood idols. I love it.

People claim Harbaugh is a child because of his sideline antics and also because of instances like this photo. If I met Willie Mays, I would probably feel like “I’ve died and gone to heaven” as well.

And don’t forget — Harbaugh saved the Chicago Cubs from losing the World Series.

3. “You will reap what you sow.”

Do not be deceived. You will reap what you sow.

— Coach Harbaugh (@CoachJim4UM) January 4, 2016

And boy did they. And still are.

One of the first tweets from Harbaugh in 2016 came in the epic form of trolling the San Francisco 49ers. This was posted shortly after former San Francisco coach Jim Tomsula was fired. But at the end of the day, Harbaugh is still one of the best coaches in the game, while the 49ers currently have one win under new coach Chip Kelly.

I think it’s safe to say Harbaugh won that war, even if he hadn’t tweeted about it.

4) Tweeting at our own managing editor’s work

Talented Magicians are masters of deception, they divert attention w/ 1 hand to conceal & deceive w/ the other hand. https://t.co/GGUSlIDdNc

— Coach Harbaugh (@CoachJim4UM) February 15, 2016

This was in reference to a story written by our own Anthony Broome about the SEC, particularly SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, complaining about Michigan’s spring break tour from last offseason.

Harbaugh is going deep into the arsenal on this one, but it is a justified comment in regards to all the blasphemous comments and opinions by SEC schools and coaches. It just goes to show that no matter what you try to say or do, a talented magician like Harbaugh will be there to make sure he gets his way.

5) Burning the Buckeyes

Good to see Director Smith being relevant again after the tattoo fiasco. Welcome back!

— Coach Harbaugh (@CoachJim4UM) March 23, 2016

I’d put a few fire emojis in here if I could, so I’ll just say this:

Ouch.

This tweet was also influenced by an opinion of Michigan’s spring break plans. This time, it was the opinion of Ohio State AD Gene Smith.

“If we were jump starting our program, I’d probably do that too,” Smith said.

In all fairness, that’s a pretty good burn as well. But nonetheless, Harbaugh had to swoop in and get the last laugh, and he did so by burning Smith on the NCAA sanctions handed down to Ohio State in 2011 that inevitably got former OSU coach Jim Tressel fired.

I can’t wait to see what hot takes Harbaugh tweets about in 2017. Let’s just hope it involves more about jive turkeys and other awesome references from the ‘70s.

The scribes & pundits drop ball again. Those understanding etymology of jive turkey know it to be coined by Gandolph Finch & Jim Rockford. pic.twitter.com/idc1s9byZI

— Coach Harbaugh (@CoachJim4UM) December 15, 2016

A rising playmaker out of Detroit Martin Luther King High School, Thomas is the No. 58 player overall and fifth-best corner in the class of 2017, per Scout.

The overwhelming expectation throughout Thomas' recruitment was that he would stay in Michigan. The Wolverines had a 93 percent mark on 247Sports' Crystal Ball, leaving the remaining 7 percent for Michigan State. A number of schools received unofficial visits, but Michigan and Michigan State understandably got a majority of those looks.

Michigan also made a big impression on his mother, Carmen Thomas.

She told Sam Webb of the Detroit News:

I was very impressed. My biggest take away was the M-PACT (Michigan Professional and Career Transition) program because a lot of the colleges get the kids there to win, win, win – and nobody is concerned with what's going on after the fact. That was big to me. They keep the kids focused. 'You're here to play, but there's a career after the fact so let's get this in order.'

Thomas is listed at 5'11 ½" and 170 pounds, which is still a little slight but an improvement over where he was a year ago. That extra weight is part of the reason why he's moved up from being a low-end top-150 recruit all the way up to breaking the top 100.

A big senior season will only serve to help matters. He's a borderline 5-star who has wowed at every national camp he's attended. His performance at The Opening this summer played a big part in his moving up some boards.

As it stands, he's now a Michigan man and can shift his focus to continuing to get better as he makes the leap to the next level.

It will be a drama-free Sunday for Wolverines across the nation.

College Football’s regular season is over and now all eyes are on the playoff committee and the subsequent bowls that churn out on Sunday afternoon.

Michigan needed help with Washington and/or Clemson losing to throw them back into the mix. That did not happen and now their postseason destination has become extremely clear.

Every major outlet currently has the Wolverines heading to the Orange Bowl to take on Florida State, though some still have Louisville in the mix for that Dec. 30 game. Ohio State is likely locked in to a playoff spot and Big Ten Champion Penn State (very weird to type that, truthfully) is Rose Bowl bound. Wisconsin appears headed for the Cotton Bowl against the Western Michigan Broncos.

We will see what Sunday brings, but expect the Wolverines to be announced as an Orange Bowl team when the assignments drop.

The playoff will be set at 12:30 p.m. ET and the New Year’s Six bowl pairings will be out at 2:30 pm. ET.

Something occurred to me this weekend, right around the time Michigan was scoring its eighth touchdown against the Terps - a team that’s, admittedly, in the bottom tier of the conference according to advanced stats, alongside Michigan State, Illinois, Rutgers and Purdue.

Michigan’s opponents are running out. And I don’t just mean physical opponents, or how much time is left in the season. When the Wolverines first entered 2016, the monkey in the room was how Michigan would fare against its rivals. Could they conquer the Spartans and Buckeyes? And, along the way, was the hype real?

The Spartans, for one, are slayed. The hype is indeed real. But there is still another monkey for this team to slay, an expression that’s dogged the Wolverines throughout its dominance.

Michigan ain’t played nobody. Sure, they’ve won, but they ain’t played nobody.

“Michigan ain’t played nobody” is an expression that became popularized by Paul Finebaum and callers to his show, but it’s bigger than that - rooted in the recent success of the SEC and struggles of the Big Ten.

After an October visit by Jim Harbaugh to see five-star prospect Najee Harris in California, Najee received a call from the outside linebackers coach for Alabama, Tosh Lupoi. His message was simple.

He called Harris after Harbaugh’s visit and belittled Michigan’s schedule in the Big Ten, comparing it with the rugged road Alabama must navigate in the Southeastern Conference.

“Every game is the Super Bowl down here,” he told Harris.

This was a smart sales tactic, because Harris craves elite competition. That’s why he savored last month’s nationally televised game against perennial power De La Salle, a 28-21 Antioch loss. It’s also why the college programs still on Harris’ radar are either contending for a national championship (Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State) or play in the Pac-12, the West’s strongest conference (USC, UCLA, Cal).

Michigan’s work ethic is unparalleled; so is the scouting and coaching. But if Harbaugh wants to replace Jabrill Peppers with five more five-stars, he’ll need to prove that Michigan is able, and eager, to win the big battles. Luckily, the Wolverines could be getting a crash course pretty soon, and they have a high-profile season-opener in 2017 with SEC East-leading Florida as well.

Besides Florida and a couple historic showdowns with Notre Dame, though, the non-conference schedule is somewhat underwhelming until 2020, when Michigan plays at Washington and then home against Virginia Tech. In the meantime, Michigan needs to hope that the Big Ten continues its resurgence as one of college football’s toughest conferences - while also winning the big games laid in front of it.

Ohio State is a rivalry game, but it’s also the first chance for this team to prove it can win when all the lights are at their brightest. If Michigan proves itself there, more opportunities and challenges follow in quick succession. Is this team ready? That’s the big test now.

Nooobody. Jim Harbaugh has his own expression about other teams and other people, while Michigan haters have another. Harbaugh’s “Who’s got it better than us?” is meant to motivate his team, to remind them that there’s nothing better than the chance to work to be better. The ability to reinvest your energy into yourself. The chance to control your destiny.

It’s been a strange but effective banner for this program. Winners get to work, losers have to watch. In contrast, ‘Michigan ain’t played nobody’ is dismissive - casually so. A lazy dismissal of Michigan’s work ethic and strength, a perfect epitome of the difference between those who had a hand in its success and, on the other end of the spectrum, those who basely criticize.

It’s a shot across the bow from SEC country, and I’m starting to embrace it more and more every week. Not the belief itself - but the expression, the dislike, the fact that others happen to feel that way. It’s an opportunity, a meme in waiting, a sign that all eyes are on Michigan if and when they do make it in the playoff. Of course, Michigan could fumble once they get there. But they could dominate, too.

One of the young’uns: Kekoa Crawford.

With Saturday’s win over Maryland, Michigan is one of only five remaining unbeaten teams. They forced a team that’s leading in the Pac-12 South to crumple under pressure after the first quarter. They have broken through the #2 red zone defense in America, and the #6 red zone defense, and the #9 red zone defense, and the #12 red zone defense, by scoring 19 times in 23 opportunities in the red zone.

They beat three of the top eleven teams in the country, according to S&P+ ratings. They’ve held an All-American running back to the lowest total of his career in games where he got more than one carry, and held another running back who’s one of the top 40 in the country in total yards to 51 and no touchdowns. Who are these people? Who are these teams? Don’t worry, they’re nobody.

Michigan leads all of Division-I in point differential. They’re #1 in the country in scoring defense (10.7 a game), and #3 in scoring offense (48.0 a game). They’re allowing less than 140 passing yards per game. Harbaugh is 19-3 at his alma mater, the best start for a Michigan coach since Fielding Yost.

But if you happen to not respect this Michigan team, and even more if you hate them, and even more if you hope their success is not a hurricane in the making - I say don’t worry about it. I wouldn’t give them a second thought, or change any of my work habits. As we all know, they ain’t played nobody, really.

*Yes, I’m aware I mixed the “elephant in the room” and “monkey on the back” metaphors. It's what fun people do.

**From 2022 to 2027, Michigan has one game scheduled per year: UCLA in ‘22 and ‘23, Texas in ‘24 and ‘27, and Oklahoma in ‘25 and ‘26. With the emphasis on non-conference schedules raised by the Playoff Committee, the potential benefits in recruiting, and the fan service it provides, Michigan and Warde Manuel would be smart to be a little aggressive here in scheduling more high-profile home-and-homes.

The Wolverines were in control from start to finish, led by the electric Jabrill Peppers.

The No. 4 Michigan Wolverines absolutely crushed the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in New Jersey, wining 78-0 and moving to 3-0 in Big Ten play.

Michigan’s first couple possessions were sloppy at best. With the rain coming down, the offense struggled to a pair of punts and a De’Veon Smith fumble to lead off the game. However, Rutgers was finding success just as difficult to come by, as the Michigan defense forced a trio of three-and-outs.

The Wolverine offense was finally jump-started by, guess who, Jabrill Peppers. Coming from a Wildcat formation, Peppers burst down the sideline for a 63-yard gain. On the very next play, Ty Issac took a pitch from four yards out into the end zone for the game’s first score. A Kenny Allen extra point made it 7-0 Michigan with 7:44 to go in the first.

On the next Rutgers punt, Peppers made an electric 47-yard return for a touchdown that was negated by a block in the back. Michigan ended up scoring anyway, as Wilton Speight threw a perfectly placed ball in the end zone that fell into the outstretched arms of Jehu Chesson. The 30-yard connection helped Michigan go up 14-0 with 4:27 left in the first.

The first quarter ended with a Rutgers’ fumble recovered by Bryan Mone. Quarterback Zach Allen had enough for the Scarlet Knights’ first first down of the game, but instead the turnover gave Michigan the ball at the 7-yard line. Rutgers ended the quarter with -1 total yards, compared to Michigan’s 138.

Though his punt return did not count, Peppers found his way onto the score sheet, coming out of the Wildcat again. The New Jersey product’s juke and scamper five seconds into the second quarter gave Michigan a 21-0 advantage.

The next Michigan possession saw Chris Evans take a handoff and streak 44 yards down the field. Multiple spins and broken tackles left Evans just inches short of the goal line, and Khalid Hill punched it in for his sixth touchdown of the year. A fake on the extra point by holder Garrett Moores put Michigan ahead 29-0 with 11:57 left in the second.

Though Speight struggled with some accuracy early on, he threw a great deep ball to Amara Darboh for 48 yards down to the Rutgers 8-yard line the next time Michigan at the ball. On fourth down Hill found the end zone again, and with 7:18 left, Michigan was up 36-0.

For the fourth-straight possession, Michigan quickly drove down the field to score. Again it was Peppers playing out of the Wildcat, scoring from four yards out. The scoreboard showed 43-0 Michigan with 2:10 remaining in the second quarter.

The stats were not pretty at halftime. Michigan had 309 total yards; Rutgers had six on the air and zero on the ground. The Scarlet Knights completed a total of one pass and went 0-for-10 on third downs. It was an absolute domination through 30 minutes.

John O’Korn came out under center to start the second half. He hit Hill on a short pass for an 11-yard touchdown -- Hill’s third of the day -- to give Michigan a 50-0 lead five minutes into the third quarter.

Shane Morris was the third quarterback to take the field in the game (excluding Peppers, of course). A 57-yard run by Evans put him over 150 yards on the day, and Karan Higdon’s rush from 15 yards out made it 57-0 Wolverines with 8:17 to go in the third.

Meanwhile, the Michigan defensive line continued to be in complete control, racking up the sacks, quarterback hurries, and tackles for loss. Rutgers was unable to sustain any sort of drive and entered the fourth quarter still without any first downs. They sat at 16 total yards through 45 minutes.

Bobby Henderson got his first carry of the season and took it for a touchdown, diving in from 13 yards out. With 12:45 left in the game, the score stood 64-0 Michigan. Three minutes later, Higdon took a handoff on a third down and sprinted 44 yards for a touchdown virtually untouched, making the score 71-0.

51 minutes into the game, Rutgers got their first first down of the game. Three plays later, they punted.

Isaac added another touchdown on a 34-yard run with 3:46 remaining in the game. Michigan went ahead an astounding 78-0.

When it was all said and done, six different Wolverines found the end zone. Michigan outgained Rutgers 600 yards to 39, and the Scarlet Knights earned just one first down and finished 0-for-17 on third down conversion attempts.

Here are some things to keep an eye on as Michigan tries to move to 3-0 against Colorado.

Michigan takes on Colorado on Saturday afternoon at the Big House as both teams look to move to 3-0 on the young college football season.

The Wolverines enter this game as a 19.5 point favorite and should have the upper hand on Saturday, but the Buffaloes are the best opponent they have played to this point and could give them some trouble.

Here are some things to keep an eye on in this game:

Run game renaissance

Michigan showed last week and in parts of last seasons that they do not necessarily need to run the ball to be successful offensively, but it still is not ideal.

UCF sold out to stop the run last week and it largely worked, but the Wolverines made them pay through the air. If teams are doing to dare Jim Harbaugh to throw, or do anything for that matter, he is going to take advantage of that and make them pay.

Michigan has superior talent for the third week in a row and it will be interesting to see if they can get their running game back going.

Speight locked in

If teams want to sell out to shut down the rushing attack, Michigan will throw all day and they have the quarterback to do it. Wilton Spieght is galaxies ahead of where Jake Rudock at this point last season and he has shown the ability to hit on long passes.

Speight has been nearly flawless since his first snap this season. We will see how he follows it up this afternoon.

Tempo tempo tempo

UCF moved the ball and gave Michigan’s defense problems that they have had with spread offenses over the years and Colorado brings a similar up-tempo attack to the Big House on Saturday afternoon.

Michigan put a lot of correctable things on film in last week’s game. It will be interesting to examine the adjustments that Harbaugh and Don Brown have made this week.

The defensive lineman could be back sooner than later.

According to Chris Balas of The Wolverine, Michigan defensive end Taco Charlton could be back on the field soon. The athlete was spotted on campus walking without crutches and without a limp after going down with an injury against Hawaii.

"I don't think either one (of those guys) will be available this week," Harbaugh said Monday afternoon. "I don't think Bryan Mone or Taco will be out ... It's hard to say at this point. It's hard to say at this point. I don't have an update on how long they'll be out, but I don't anticipate them playing this week."

Charlton left the 63-3 win over Hawaii with an ankle injury in the first half. He was then ruled out for the rest of the game.

Without Charlton or Mone, true freshman Michael Onwenu will see more time on the defensive end.

"That's possible," Harbaugh said. "He played well (Saturday). He played more snaps on offense but he's somebody who played in the game, played well, stood out as a very good player in the game."

Taking a look at the three guys who stood out on offense, defense and special teams in Michigan’s season opener.

Almost everything went right for Michigan in its 63-3 win over Hawaii on Saturday afternoon, meaning there was no shortage of standout performances.

Let’s hand out some game balls:

Freshman Running Back Chris Evans

Stats: Eight carries, 112 yards, two touchdowns

Evans was arguably the star of the win over Hawaii. He had an excellent debut and showed why he will be valuable to the Wolverines in the run game.

Evans was hailed as a player in camp to watch and it was good to see him back up the hype in game action. He is a gamebreaker and it will be interesting to see how Michigan incorporates him into the offense going forward.

Redshirt Junior Mike McCray

Stats: 7.5 total tackles (3.5 for loss), two sacks, forced fumble

Linebacker was one of Michigan’s question marks coming into the season, but they performed well in the first game of the year, headlined by the performance of McCray.

He has had a hard time staying on the field due to injuries, but is expected to be a big part of the defense this season. Don Brown is going to blitz, and blitz he did on Saturday. McCray was up to the challenge and played very well.

Redshirt Sophomore Jabrill Peppers

Peppers could have very easily been in the spot that McCray is with his debut at linebacker for the Wolverines, but on a day where there were hardly any fireworks on special teams, he provided them on his own on a return that ultimately did not even end up counting because of a penalty.

The Freshman 15 (Er...17)

The class of 2016 has long been touted as a group that would pay early dividends for Michigan as soon as they hit campus, and Saturday backed that up. Harbaugh played 17 true freshman against Hawaii, most in reserve roles, but that is still extremely important.

They have players like Evans and Rashan Gary, among others, who will be important pieces in year one, but they are not going to overly rely on freshmen this season. That bodes well for both now and in the future, as the reps will not only help the team this season but also help them gain experience for the seasons moving forward.

‘Bold predictions’ includes a big victory in Columbus.

Fox Sports columnist Bruce Feldman has issued ten “bold predictions” for the upcoming football season, some of which we’ll know the answers to just a few short days from now.

He answers one of the biggest questions — are the Michigan Wolverines for real this year — with an emphatic yes, saying simply “Michigan will win at Ohio State for the first time since 2000 and win the Big Ten.”

There are a few other fan bases that might take issue with his assessment, but the biggest question will be what happens in the postseason if Feldman’s prediction comes true. He has LSU, Oklahoma and Clemson joining the Wolverines in the College Football Playoff, while Stanford wins the Pac-12 but gets snubbed a second straight time.

Feldman doesn’t have UM going all the way though, saying Clemson will win the national championship.
