The LSU Tigers are set to open their 2017 season Saturday against the BYU Cougars in Houston's NRG Stadium, but with now-Tropical Storm Harvey causing flooding in and around Houston, a venue change is looking very likely.

The Advocate's Ross Dellenger provided an update from LSU athletic director Joe Alleva about Saturday's game:

This would be the second year in a row inclement weather has pushed LSU to alter its schedule.

Hurricane Matthew forced LSU and Florida to reach an agreement that saw the Tigers welcome in the Gators for a 16-10 defeat last November. Since the Gators lost what would've been a home game, they'll get to host LSU in back-to-back years (2017 and 2018).

In a tweet providing a forecast for the rainfall expected over the next week, the National Weather Service said Harvey is "unprecedented" and "beyond anything experienced":

NWS Houston tweeted some residents can expect 10 to 25 inches of rain over the next five days. According to the National Weather Service, 10.34 inches was Houston's previous record for the highest single-day rainfall.

Before LSU and BYU are set to face off, the Houston Texans are scheduled to play the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday in NRG Stadium. The team announced Saturday it's still determining whether Harvey will impact the game.

LSU head coach Ed Orgeron named senior Danny Etling his starting quarterback for the Tigers' Week 1 clash with BYU on Sept. 2.

Etling beat out freshman and former 4-star recruit Myles Brennan for the job.

However, the Advocate's Ross Dellenger reported Brennan was "a very close second." He will now serve as Etling's backup.

Despite the challenge from Brennan, Etling was always the leader in the clubhouse to draw the start on opening day.

After replacing Brandon Harris under center a season ago, the 23-year-old completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 2,123 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions over the course of 11 appearances.

Etling was particularly impressive down the stretch when he shredded Texas A&M for 324 yards and two scores before he was an efficient 16-of-29 for 217 yards and two touchdowns in a 29-9 Citrus Bowl win over Lamar Jackson and the Louisville Cardinals.

Looking ahead, Etling will attempt to build on that strong finish and get the Tigers off to a fast after they stumbled to start the 2016 campaign.

And yes, that means nothing right now.

The College Football Playoff Committee issued its first top 25 tonight, with the Tigers checking in at No. 13 in advance of this weekend’s huge showdown with No. 1 Alabama.

The rest of the top 25, of course, as follows.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide (8-0)
2. Clemson Tigers (8-0)
3. Michigan (8-0)
4. Texas A&M (7-1)
5. Washington Huskies (8-0)
6. Ohio State Buckeyes (7-1)
7. Louisville Cardinals (7-1)
8. Wisconsin Badgers (6-2)
9. Auburn Tigers (6-2)
10. Nebraska Cornhuskers (7-1)
11. Florida Gators (6-1)
12. Penn State Nittany Lions (6-2)
13. LSU Tigers (5-2)
14. Oklahoma Sooners (6-2)
15. Colorado Buffaloes (6-2)
16. Utah Utes (7-2)
17. Baylor Bears (6-1)
18. Oklahoma State Cowboys (6-2)
19. Virginia Tech Hokies (6-2)
20. West Virginia Mountaineers (6-1)
21. North Carolina Tar Heels (6-2)
22. Florida State Seminoles (5-3)
23. Western Michigan (8-0)
24. Boise State Broncos (7-1)
25. Washington State Cougars (6-2)

Obviously, A&M in the top 25 is going to cause some WARBARGHL, but who cares, its just the first week and this will all change.

As for the Tigers, just win BeBe.

LSU’s Donavaughn Campbell was arrested on Georgia Tech’s campus over the open date.

Ed Orgeron suffered his first major discipline situation this week with the reports that freshman offensive lineman Donavaughn Campbell was arrested on two counts of misdemeanor battery over the weekend on Georgia Tech’s campus.

Campbell’s suspension was announced shortly after the reports surfaced today.

According to the report, the event unfolded at the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity House at Georgia Tech at 12:21 a.m. CT Sunday. Two victims, both GT students, told police that they were punched in the face and head by two men. Campbell was arrested along with Georgia Tech safety Jalen Johnson, the report said. Johnson was booked with one count of simple battery.

Players typically are given a few days off on open weekends, and Campbell has family at Georgia Tech, which one assumes he was visiting. Campbell, a four-star recruit from Ponchatoula, had impressed in training camp and seen some limited playing time as a reserve before suffering an ankle injury.

On Homecoming night, a native son of Louisiana lived the dream.

At the end of Saturday’s beatdown of Missouri, I saw the most perfect moment I have ever witnessed in Death Valley.

I don’t have any photos or videos of it. There was video of it from a different angle shot from field level, but it was missing what made it so special in the first place.

As a personal tradition, my friends and I always stay to sing the alma mater with the band. Not the abridged alma mater they play for the players, but the actual from the heart version that is sung without the aid of instruments. In between playing the watered down version and singing the final version, the band plays Let Us Break Bread Together, an old gospel hymnal. It’s a somber, beautiful song that slowly builds to a crescendo that is pierced by a lone trumpet.

On the field, Ed Orgeron was just fishing with his interview requests and saying hello to recruits, things a coach generally does after a home game. As he jogged off the field at the exact moment the song reached his apex, Orgeron thrust his arms in the air and jogged out of sight into the tunnel. It was an ending lifted from The Breakfast Club, only somehow made better by timing and raw emotion. We’re kind of force fed those kind of moments by movies to the point that most of us roll our eyes when it happens on screen, but when something like that happens in real life, we usually don’t know how to react to it.

When Les Miles was fired, college football mourned one of their single most favorite people inside the sport. Les was wild, unpredictable, and uncanny while being reserved and soft, if not out, spoken. Many feared that college football was made significantly less fun and interesting in the loss of somebody wholly unique.

It’s almost as if they didn’t see who the interim head coach was.

Ed Orgeron is a caricature of what people outside of Louisiana think cajun people are like but more than anything else, it’s a correct depiction. He has a deep, raspy voice and calls his own son “T-Boy.” I’ve heard stories of him not knowing how to program the GPS in his truck and calling staffers whose name he forgets “young man”. Coming out of South Lafourche High School, Orgeron had committed to play football at LSU, but had left after a year to head to Northwestern. He has since expressed regret over the decision.

Orgeron’s coaching career began immediately after his playing career and he quickly rose through the ranks. Miami was his first sustained stop, his first job coaching defensive line. Orgeron was also troubled at the time: he had a restraining order filed against him, and he was involved in a bar fight in Baton Rouge. He took a year off of coaching to focus on his personal life, something that was possibly for the best.

Coach O quickly moved up the ranks once again, landing an assistant head coach job at USC by 2003 after being there since 1998. In 2005, Coach O caught his big break: Ole Miss.

It was a disaster. Coaching at his original school’s rival, Orgeron went 10-25 from 2005-2007, including Ole Miss’ only season without a conference win. He was fired on the spot after blowing a late lead against arch rivals Mississippi State. Coach O’s prowess as a recruiter simply did not translate into success on the field. Once again, Orgeron had fallen from grace.

He took a job in New Orleans working for the Saints before joining former USC colleague Lane Kiffin at Tennessee. When Lane left for USC, so did Orgeron. When Lane was left on the tarmac, Orgeron was handed the reigns for the rest of the season.

In his second stint as head coach, he did the impossible: make the nation of college football root for USC. During his time as interim, Orgeron did nothing the same as he did at Ole Miss. He was less fiery and demanding, instead treating the players like they were his sons, and the players responded. Instead of having a hand in everything, O trusted his position coaches to do their job and move forward as a unit. USC went 6-2 the rest of the way and save for one game against rivals UCLA, were noticeably better.

But it wasn’t good enough. USC passed over Ed Orgeron in favor of Steve Sarkisian. O had turned USC’s season around and was able to rally the team into a unit, and had received nothing for it.

Orgeron resigned from USC and took a year off before coming back home to LSU. We all know the story from there. He was announced on January 15th, 2015 and was named interim head coach on September 26th, 2016. His first game as head coach for LSU, if only interim, was a systematic beatdown of Missouri, and the fact that it was on homecoming made it even sweeter.

But it wasn’t the end. There was no freeze frame ending, no fade to black, no title card shown on screen. The story rages on. Orgeron in all likelihood has already put this game behind him and is looking ahead to Florida. It was just the wayward son coming home once to the family that understands and loves him for who he is. Moving forward, he will be LSU’s head coach for the next two months and anything outside of that is pure speculation. But he will always have that moment of him running into the tunnel victorious, drenched in Gatorade, with his arms held high in the air as the Golden Band From Tigerland played a gospel hymnal. We’ll all have that moment.

LSU defensive linemen accused in violent incident involving girlfriend.

According to The Advocate, Davon Godchaux was arrested by Monday morning and charged with misdemeanor battery/child endangerment and false imprisonment.

LSU SID Michael Bonnette told the Advocate that Godchaux has been suspended indefinitely.

The Advocate reports that the victim, the mother of Godchaux’s 10-month old son, had gotten into an argument with Godchaux over reported infidelity in the relationship with Godchaux suggesting the two should separate. The victim told police she became “increasingly upset.”

When the victim tried to leave the apartment where the two were located, Godchaux grabbed her by the hair and at a later point grabbed her by her shoulder and ““tossed (her) backwards near the couch.”

Police noticed what appeared to be a swollen lip and red marks on her throat.

The victim was charged with a misdemeanor summons for domestic abuse battery/child endangerment, according to the police report.

An AP report says that Godchaux told investigators that he never tried to prevent the victim from leaving and had asked several times if he could leave.

The police report also states that Godchaux, who has braces, had cuts on the inside of his mouth.

Any updates will be posted as they come in.

Ed Orgeron to serve as interim coach.

Less than 24 hours after official replay negated a winning touchdown for LSU over Auburn, Les Miles and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron have been fired. Ed Orgeron will serve as interim coach.

Miles appeared to be on the hot seat after finishing last season 9-3 and 5-3 in the SEC. However, the LSU administration seemed to have a change of heart after his Tigers defeated Texas A&M to close out the season and the players carried him off the field on their shoulders. Now, it seems that Athletics director Joe Alleva had seen enough as the Tigers fell to a record of 2-2. Now the speculation of a new hire can begin.

Miles won a National Championship in his third season in Baton Rouge and was runner up to Alabama in the 2011 season. But things went downhill from there. A pair of 10-3 seasons were followed by 8 wins and 9 wins. He was 2-7 against Ole Miss, Arkansas and Alabama over the last three seasons, and has five straight losses to Alabama.

Miles was 114–34 at LSU and 62–28 in the SEC. Combined with a 28-21 record at Oklahoma State, he owns 141 career wins to 55 losses.

~~~
Also getting a pink slip on Sunday was Notre Dame defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder. Curiously, Irish head man Brian Kelly said in his post-game press conference "coaching had nothing to do with the outcome" of Saturday's 38-35 home loss to Duke. (The team bus is going to need some new tires for all the people Kelly keeps throwing under it)
Where does the program move from here?
Per Ross Dellenger of The Advocate:
BREAKING: Multiple sources confirm to The Advocate that #LSU has fired football coach Les Miles and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.
We will stay on top of this and continue to update with details as we get them. If I’m a betting man, defensive line coach Ed Orgeron will take over as interim head coach, and Dameyune Craig will move to offensive coordinator.
In the meantime...
UPDATE 2:
UPDATE, 3:35 P.M.: Les Miles is out as football coach at LSU, and so is his offensive coordinator.
Multiple sources told The Advocate that Miles and Cam Cameron were fired Sunday, a day after LSU, ranked No. 5 in the preseason Top 25, fell to 2-2 with an 18-13 loss at Auburn. It's the worst start to a season since Miles took over in 2005.
Defensive line coach Ed Orgeron will be LSU’s interim coach. The decision to oust Cameron and Miles was made Sunday afternoon in a discussion involving LSU athletic director Joe Alleva, school president F. King Alexander and other university leaders.
The Advocate reported at 3 p.m. that leaders were entering deep discussions regarding Miles and Cameron’s futures and that an extensive evaluation, usually reserved for after the season, was unfolding in Baton Rouge.
Multiple sources told The Advocate that Miles and Cam Cameron were fired Sunday, a day after LSU, ranked No. 5 in the preseason Top 25, fell to 2-2 with an 18-13 loss at Auburn. It's the worst start to a season since Miles took over in 2005.
Defensive line coach Ed Orgeron will be introduced to the team as LSU’s interim coach at a 5 p.m. meeting, a source said. Orgeron and LSU deputy athletic director Verge Ausberry were seen entering the football operations complex at 3:35 p.m. Ausberry declined comment.
The decision to oust Cameron and Miles was made Sunday afternoon in a discussion involving LSU athletic director Joe Alleva, school president F. King Alexander and other university leaders. A source said Miles met with Alleva between 2:30-3:30 p.m. and took the news of his dismissal well. Alleva was seen being driven to the LSU football complex at 3:40 p.m.
An official announcement is expected Sunday evening. Alleva will hold a news conference sometime Monday.
There was no immediate word on who would assume Cameron's play calling duties. First-year wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig has been an offensive coordinator, as has tight ends coach and former LSU quarterback Steve Ensminger. Offensive line coach Jeff Grimes, who serves as LSU's running game coordinator, is also a potential candidate.
Long-time collegiate defensive line coach Pete Jenkins is expected to join LSU's staff as well.
Orgeron was head coach at Ole Miss from 2005-07. He also served as interim head coach in 2013 at Southern California after Lane Kiffin was fired during that season, going 6-2.
UPDATE 5:07 p.m.: LSU has issued an official statement.
“Decisions like this are never easy ones to make,” Alleva said. “Coach Miles has done a tremendous job here and he’s been a great ambassador for our University, which makes this even more difficult.
“However, it’s apparent in evaluating the program through the first month of the season that a change has to be made. Our commitment to excellence and competing at the highest level is unwavering, and our goals for the remainder of this season haven’t changed. We have an obligation to our student-athletes to put them in the best position to have success on the football field each week and we have great confidence that coach Orgeron will do just that.”
[Image Can Not Be Found]
GREAT HERB TYLER’S GHOST. Out of nowhere, LSU unveiled some brand new special uniforms for this weekend’s Gold Game vs Mississippi St. After last year’s white-on-white-on-white “Stormtrooper” combo, I though LSU Football uniform design had peaked, but this is just fantastic.
Let’s start with what’s awesome
Y. A. Tittle Font
BLOCK L BACK
Hidden Sailor Mike
White Lids
I’m only slightly reserved about the color because depending on how it’s lit, it seems to hover between LSU’s modern “canary yellow” gold and a darker, traditional “brown mustard” gold. We’ll have to wait to see them in person this weekend under the lights for final judgement, but these seem fantastic.
The uniform combination of white/gold/white is possibly a first for LSU in the modern era, and The Gold Jersey, the legendary magic bringer of LSU Baseball and Basketball, hasn’t been seen on the gridiron since a string of games in the mid 90’s
Former five-star wide receiver recruit Tyron Johnson announced via Twitter that he would be departing the LSU program and has been granted his release by the LSU coaching staff.
According to his father, Johnson is looking to play in a “more wide open offense.”
Johnson’s announcement comes on the heels of the team loosing Christian Lacouture and Isaiah Washington to season ending injuries, as well as Corey Thompson missing several weeks due to a broken leg. Unlike Lacouture and Thompson, however, Johnson was not expected to start.
The loss of Johnson does not help the Tigers’ depth at wide receiver after veterans John Diarse and Trey Quinn departed during the off-season. Though both Diarse and Quinn would have been upperclassmen entering 2016 while Johnson would have been just a true sophomore.
While this departure does rob the Tigers of some experience at the position, it isn’t particularly debilitating. Dupre and Doral figure to be one-two in receptions and receiving yards and would have started ahead of Johnson. Meanwhile, other veterans such as DJ Chark and Derrick Dillon, along with freshman Stephan Sullivan and Drake Davis are all vying for the remaining receiving yards, which would have made it tough for Johnson to get on the field.
One of the most sought after recruits as a senior in high school, and the top player in the state according to 247, Johnson should have no shortage of suitors. He was recruited heavily by several Big 12 schools before deciding on the Tigers.
In his one season with the Tigers Johnson had nine receptions for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
Your latest news and notes.
Well, not some great news to start. Christian LaCouture, who was gonna play a big role in LSU’s 3 man defensive line has suffered some sort of knee injury which appears serious. There’s no confirmation on whether it will require surgery or if it’ll keep him out, but it’s something to worry about. WAFB is going as far as saying LaCouture has a complete ACL tear, which would put him out for the year. Isaiah Washington also suffered a very serious injury and it seems like he will be out long term -http://www.theadvocate.com/bat.....user-share
Some updates from camp, which includes praise from Les Miles for freshman quarterback Lindsey Scott, how the offensive line competition is coming along and freshmen who could step up early - http://www.theadvocate.com/bat.....01294.html
We had heard some about the possibility of it happening, but now it’s (seemingly) for real. LSU will have both Dave Aranda and Cam Cameron coaching from the sidelines and not the coaches box. Brandon Harris has said that he worked better with Cameron on the sideline and Aranda worked from the coaches box at Wisconsin - http://www.theadvocate.com/bat.....b7a8a.html
There’s still no clear word on whether Travonte Valentine, hereafter known as Schrödinger's Nose Tackle, has been cleared or not. Assuming he has, Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports - one of the best in the business - talks here about how it helps LSU up front - http://www.foxsports.com/colle.....lay-080816
The #SummerOfMiles rolled on, as LSU picked up another blue chip defensive back in 5-star safety JaCoby Stevens - http://lsu.247sports.com/Board.....rums-59425
Gonna finish off today with a couple videos, starting off with S&C coach Tommy Moffitt talking about his baby, LSU’s new weight room.
The status of this mysterious player is still unclear.
So LSU’s elusive 330-pound unicorn, former five-star defensive tackle recruit Travonte Valentine, is finally clear to return to the LSU football team after more than a year and two junior colleges.
Kind of. Maybe. Possibly.
Sonny Shipp of the LSU 247 Sports affiliate reported the story this afternoon:
Former LSU defensive tackle Travonte Valentine is back with the Tigers and has been ruled eligible to play right away, as first-reported by 247Sports.
He’s now on LSU’s campus, and the elite JUCO product will practice immediately with the Tigers when camp begins this week.
This is a major shot in the arm for LSU’s program heading into the 2016 campaign.
Valentine has three years of eligibility remaining to play for the Bayou Bengals.
This time around, the Tigers get not only a bigger and stronger Valentine, but more importantly a more dialed-in individual.
“I want to focus on my three years at LSU to graduate and hopefully win a few National Championships,” Valentine said. “I’ve matured as a man since I left and want to prove myself to the wonderful fans at LSU.”
Valentine originally signed with LSU and was on the squad in 2014, but wasn’t eligible to play, thus redshirting. He was dismissed from LSU last summer due to team violations.
Valentine played last fall at Yuma, Ariz./Arizona Western Junior College. He then transferred to Perkinston, Miss./Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
However, per the Advocate, LSU is not confirming Valentine’s status with the team.
And then there’s this tweet from 104.9 ESPN Radio’s Derek Ponamsky:
While progress has been made academically by Travonte Valentine, he has not yet been cleared to practice with LSU. @1045espn
— Derek Ponamsky (@DerekPonamsky) August 8, 2016
Sooo...what now?
My best guess, after some cryptic texts from #sources, is that while Valentine has cleared his necessary academic hurtles for re-admission to the university, there may be a hoop or two that Les Miles and the coaching staff want him to jump through before he may begin practicing. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Valentine giving quotes to Sonny irked the staff. Valetine’s previous time here was an astounding testament to doing “the wrong things.” After a lost fall due to the SEC league office flagging his transcript, Valentine was suspended for academics in the spring of 2015, and wouldn’t last much longer. I am told that had he not gotten the boot, he would not have been academically eligible for the Fall. He also failed multiple drug tests and had ballooned to well over 350 pounds when he left Baton Rouge.
That said, coaches aren’t in the habit of giving this many chances to average players, and the reports of Valentine’s limited appearances in those 2014 practices being very impressive. What’s more, he’s the perfect type of two-gap defensive lineman LSU needs for Dave Aranda’s 3-4 defense, either as a nose tackle or a 4/5-technique defensive end.
I would guess we’ll have some clarity to this situation at Les Miles’ next press conference on Thursday. But for now, the unicorn remains shrouded in mystery.
As expected, five-star 2017 defensive back prospect JaCoby Stevens committed to LSU today, choosing the Tigers over Alabama and Georgia.
The 6-1, 200-pound Stevens is a composite five-star prospect and the No. 2 safety in the class of 2017. He is LSU’s 19th commitment in this class and second safety, joining four-star Grant Delpit of the IMG Academy. Stevens moves LSU up to No. 3 in the 247 Sports composite class rankings.
While Austin Thomas deserves a lot of credit for discovering Stevens early on, give
Dave Aranda and Corey Raymond plenty for re-securing his pledge this summer.
Les Miles has been the coach on the bayou since Nick Saban left following the 2004 season. However, he wasn't necessarily the obvious choice to take over the job. There were reports in the midst of LSU's search that Houston Nutt might be a candidate. That wasn't shocking considering Nutt nearly left Arkansas the year before to take over at Nebraska.
Bo Mattingly interviewed Nutt on his show this week put this out in the Twitterverse:
Nutt on how close he came to taking the LSU job when Saban left: "I thought there for a while that it might happen."
— Bo Mattingly (@SportsTalkwBo) August 3, 2016
Which seems ridiculous, but then at the same time you never know. Could Nutt pull wins out of teams with the amazing vein of talent that is Louisiana? Would Nutt have superceded Miles' lunacy? Would LSU have to have completely shutdown because Nutt would've destroyed the football program which is the only thing holding the bankrupt school system together?
The possibilities are an endless twisting nether that I may never be able to fully comprehend, but the real question I have is who would Arkansas have picked up on the coaching block in early January 2005?
Who knows. But it's intriguing to think what would have happened had Nutt not been around for the McFadden years and if someone capable of managing the Springdale thing had been in charge. What do you think would have happened?
Day one of LSU’s fall practices are in the books, so lets check out what the #beatbros had to say...
In other news, the first ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll came out today, with the Tigers coming in at sixth. Alabama, unsurprisingly, checked in at No. 1, and four other SEC teams made the cut -- including Tennessee at 10, with a first-place vote even.
