I like when Auburn beats Arkansas. The Hogs learned a simple college football lesson: look like Rutgers, play like Rutgers. Here’s to hoping the Aggies wear all smokey gray or black on Saturday. They won’t call it that, they’ll call it “Anthracite” or “Texas Smoke” or some other made-up nonsense a person got paid money to come up with instead of saying “we’re all gonna wear gray shirts.” As for the bye week, wasn’t that when Auburn was supposed to get healthy? With Pettway injured, my confidence level going forward is waning. Auburn has shown it plays best when it utilizes at least two healthy runners. Luckily we have a stable of running backs who have fresh legs due to a nonsensical lack of touches. Maybe this is what ole Gustav has been planning for all along?

Can’t get my running backs injured if I never play them!

Looking at my stats computer in the laboratory, I am hoping to find some sort of reassurance that this Auburn team is really the 14th best team in America and not a 7-5 bastion of mediocrity. This game will tell us a lot about how the rest of the season will go, and I want to know Auburn is going to win.

If you’ve been reading these articles you know that I am the preeminent Auburn football statistician in the Auburn Family (#blessed) and the computer never lies. Even the two times it has seemed to have predicted a win and Auburn lost, it was really only a test of your faith. When you look back, the footprints you will see will be the computer’s. It has feet.

Carry us calmly into calamity, crest the waves of conflict with your microprocessors microprocessing our most longed-for goals, computer guide.

Auburn has played twice in College Station, Texas, and has never lost there. In fact, Auburn hasn’t lost a game in the state of Texas since January 1, 1986. I was less than a month old! The Tigers are riding a Texas-sized 30-year winning streak into Saturday’s game. Auburn this season is 2-1 when playing west of the Mississippi, and 2-0 if you don’t count the miserable second half against LSU. In games west of the Mississippi, Auburn has outrushed it’s opponents 797 yards to 452, rushing for an average of 266 yards per game and allowing only 150. Auburn has allowed its opponents west of the Mississippi to convert on only 32% of all third downs and have only allowed a total of 54 first downs in those three games. This Auburn defense is really dominant and has traveled well. The offense has also been better than we think, outgaining its opponents by nearly 200 total yards per game west of Mississippi and holding the ball for an average of four more minutes than its opponents.

When Auburn plays west of Old Man River this season, it plays extremely well.

Computer, what else?

In Bill Connelly’s excellent S&P+ rankings system, Auburn is ranked 10th. Texas A&M is ranked 72nd. Auburn has played 4 other teams ranked 50 or worse this season and is 4-0 against them. Missouri and Ole Miss both ranked ahead of the Aggies, and Auburn dispatched with both of them with relative ease. Mississippi State, whom Auburn delivered a beat-down, is one of top 20 teams in America according to S&P+. That Mississippi State team straight-up worked the Aggies last weekend, by the way. The Aggies have yet to beat a team ranked in the top 25 of S&P+, and their Division I-A wins are against teams ranked 110, 99, 65, and 90 respectively. Why are we even worried about this game?

Since 1961, Auburn is 6-1 on November 4. It has beaten its last three opponents on that date, and has won two straight against schools who wear a shade of red in their uniforms. Texas A&M is toast.

The last time the Aggies hosted a conference game in College Station on November 4 was back in 2006. They got beaten by Oklahoma. Oklahoma’s receiving coach for that game: Kevin Sumlin. Follow the math, people. The Aggies have never won on November 4 when Kevin Sumlin is in the building. Never. It won’t happen this year either. I see Auburn’s defense allowing a couple of big plays but not enough to make Tiger fans worried. The stats show Auburn’s offense having its way against Texas A&M and the Tigers rolling up yards on their way to a comfortable road win.

Auburn 42

Aggies 17

What You Need to Know:

After a bye week, Auburn is ranked #16 and is 6-2 on the season and 4-1 in the SEC. The Tigers lost to Clemson in week 2 and let an early lead slip away against LSU.

Texas A&M fell to 5-3 on the season; 3-2 in the SEC after getting outmatched by Mississippi State on Saturday.

Auburn’s remaining schedule includes a road trip to College Station, then three home games against Georgia, ULM, and Alabama in the Iron Bowl.

Texas A&M is trending down at 79th in total offense with 387 YPG (90th in passing YPG; 42nd in rushing YPG); while Auburn is ranked 27th in total offense with 462 YPG (68th in passing YPG; 19th in rushing YPG).

Auburn’s SBNation site is College and Magnolia.

Betting Lines:

Auburn opens as a -12.5 point favorite.

Auburn is 3-3-2 Against the Spread while Texas A&M is 4-4 ATS.

The Under has hit in A&M’s last 4 games; while the Over has hit in the last 5 games Auburn has played.

Historical Notes:

Texas A&M leads the all-time series 5-2 against Auburn.

Auburn has never lost in College Station, and Texas A&M has never lost in Auburn. Before A&M joined the SEC, two of the games were played in Dallas.

Auburn is known as the Tigers, but does not have a live tiger. It does use a live eagle in pre-game pageantry to fly across the stadium to the War Eagle yell. The current War Eagle is War Eagle VII, and named Nova. However, Nova was suspended from flight activities due to a diagnosis of chronic heart disease. A bald eagle named Spirit is flying in the place of Nova for this season. War Eagle is also an endearing term used like Howdy, or Roll Tide among fans. Auburn has clarified that its mascot will remain the Tigers, as they are the “Tigers who say ‘War Eagle’”. In my opinion, this is one of the best traditions in College Football. Also, Get better Nova.

Famous Auburn Tigers Alumni include Charles Barkley, Bo Jackson, Jimmy Buffett, Frank Thomas, Cam Newton, and Tim Cook. Leave your favorite in the comments.

Tigers to Watch:

Kerryon Johnson RB 6’0” 212 lbs

The junior running back is running at a 5.3 yards per carry average. Kerryon has 723 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. The 14 TDs puts Kerryon tied for fourth in total TDs this season (rushing, receiving, return). This is after being slowed by injury earlier this year. Auburn uses the spread to employ a power running scheme, and Johnson is a great fit for what Coach Gus Malzhan wants to do.

Jeff Holland, LB 6’2” 249 lbs

The junior edge rusher currently leads the SEC with 8 sacks along with 10 tackles for loss. In Auburn’s last game against Arkansas, Holland forced two fumbles and recovered one.

There’s no denying Auburn has some serious momentum on the recruiting trail right now. Things were moving a bit slow heading into late June when Auburn hadn’t landed a commit since A-Day. Then things got rolling:

That’s quite the way to finish the summer. Throw in Auburn trending for 4* Buck Richard Jibunor, 4* WR Seth Williams and 4* OT Dylan Wonnum and you have plenty of reasons to be excited about what the Tigers are doing on the recruiting trail. However, a big year on the field in 2017 could really take this class from what should be really good to elite. Guys like 5* QB Justin Fields, 4* OG Trey Hill, 4* WR Justyn Ross and 4* CB Kyler McMichael are going to be watching Auburn close this fall. If the Tigers can accomplish what we think they are capable of accomplishing on the field, this could end up being one of Gus Malzahn’s best classes since arriving at Auburn. But you got to win for that to happen.

Recapping Corky Kell Classic

Quite a few Auburn commits and targets took part in the Corky Kell Classic this past weekend, kicking off the 2017 Georgia high school football season. It was a mixed bag for Auburn commits. 4* LB Michael Harris had a big day despite battling some early injuries. He was flying around the field and made two really clutch plays late in the game to help his Tucker squad escape a very feisty Kell team.

4* WR Matthew Hill on the other hand, had a much rougher day. He flashed some explosiveness in the return game but also dropped a TD and had a fumble. Duke commit, 3* CB Taiyon Palmer, did a great job smothering Hill and not letting him get loose. I expect the Tiger commit to bounce back in a big way this weekend.

AU linebacker target, 4* JJ Peterson, had his snaps limited due to a nagging sports hernia injury. When he was on the field though he looked explosive off the edge rushing the passer. Hopefully he gets healed up soon and can see more time on the field. He continues to say Alabama is his leader with Auburn second.

There were a lot of players that stood out this weekend. Most of these schools will be competing for state titles in their respective classifications and are loaded with FBS talent. Here are some other players that stood out to me Saturday who may or may not become or are Auburn targets.

2020 DL Myles Murphy - The Hillgrove DL was a one man wrecking force against a loaded Buford team. He’s an AU legacy and already holds an Auburn and Georgia offer. Will probably be one of Auburn’s top targets in two seasons.

4* WR Josh Vann (South Carolina Commit) - Vann was the best player I saw Saturday. He committed to the Gamecocks after Tucker’s wild win over Kell. He flashed everything from outstanding hands to elite speed to tough blocking. Will Muschamp is getting a stud in this kid.

Archer’s Secondary - I mentioned last week that this was going to be a great test for Hill facing an elite secondary. And oh man was that group tough to handle. Palmer was the star with his two interceptions but I also though 2019 4* S Jalyn Phillips stood out. He had some big time hits on Hill. Also, I continue to be impressed by 4* DB Andrew Booth who I think could be a 5* by the end of next year’s recruiting cycle.

3* K Jake Camarda (Georgia Commit) - Norcross lost a controversial heartbreaker but my goodness do they have a kicker. This dude was booming punts, kickoffs and even drilled what should have been a game winner under some wild circumstances. It seems like Auburn and Georgia always have a solid kicker and that won’t be changing for either team with Anders Carlson and Camarda.

2019 QB Austin Kirksey - I thought the best QB of the day was Walton. He’s listed as a pro style player but he’s got some wheels when needed. He flashed a strong and accurate arm and seemed to stay in control of that offense. His stats weren’t eye popping but I saw a Power 5 QB on the field. Looks like he’s on Auburn, Alabama and Clemson’s radar. Won’t be shocked if ends up in the SEC in two years.

2019 RB Tyler Goodson - The 2019 class is absolutely loaded with RB talent, especially in the state of Georgia. There’s a very good chance Goodson is the best of the bunch. He had a big day on the ground for North Gwinnett and showed a little of everything from tough running to catching passes out of the backfield. Not sure he ever went down on first contact.

High School Football Underway

This week, Alabama and Florida join in on the action, kicking off their high school football seasons and there are some big time matchups on the docket. None bigger than the primetime Saturday night matchup that will be on ESPN2 at 7:30 PM EST featuring Auburn commit 4* QB Joey Gatewood’s Bartram Trail team traveling to face off against Clemson commit and #2 player in the country, 5* QB Trevor Lawrence’s Carterville squad. This will be a great chance to see how Gatewood stacks up against one of the premier players in the country. Fair warning, Gatewood will rotate with fellow senior 3* Riley Smith at the QB spot but should see plenty of action regardless.

Auburn target, 5* QB Justin Fields, got off to a strong start against East Paulding last week. This weekend though he faces a much stiffer challenge in the Rome Wolves who are loaded with FBS talent. Their defensive line consists of at least three future SEC players in 3* DL Jaquon Griffin (LSU Commit), 3* DL Jamarcus Chatman (Tennessee Commit) and 4* DE/LB Adam Anderson (Former UGA/LSU Commit). Fields is going to have to carry a pretty heavy load for his Harrison team to pull this one out but it should be an electric atmosphere and an exciting game to watch.

Finally, there will be plenty of Auburn targets and a couple of commits in action when the Hoover Bucs travel to Loganville, GA to face the Grayson Rams. Both teams won their state’s 7A title last season. Hoover features a pair of Auburn commits at the wideout spots in 3* Shedrick Jackson and 4* George Pickens. They will be facing a loaded Grayson defense that includes two top 2019 AU targets in 4* LB Owen Pappoe and 3* CB Jalen Alexander.

If you got nothing better to do this Friday night, go check out a high school game in your area. You never know, you might get a chance to see the next Auburn star in action. War Eagle!

Yesterday was Fan Day on the Plains, giving the Auburn family a chance to meet the current and future stars of the football program at the Auburn indoor facility. When I was younger, meeting a coach or a player was one of the biggest thrills I could have, so Fan Day is always a fun time.

As for something a bit more serious, there’s already been a lot of talk about Auburn this year and the fact that the Tigers may be set up for some pretty good success. We usually like when Auburn’s underrated, but eventually you’ve got to find a way to live up to the expectations when they’re given.

Well, they’ve being given right now.

We’ll give you the skinny from that article -- Mel picks Auburn, Washington, Ohio State, and Florida State to go to the playoff, with the Huskies coming out on top. It’s an interesting pick for sure.

For a little more analysis, broad strokes if you will, College Football News has given its short preview on Auburn and essentially says that the Tigers are the only team that compete with Alabama. Again, there are the expectations.

Something that should bode well in the meeting-expectations game is the fact that for the first time in a couple years, Auburn hasn’t endured a critical injury during the preseason (knock on wood), and the bumps it has encountered haven’t been anything to really fret over.

The little scrapes even provided an opportunity to give younger guys a bit of an extended look in scrimmages and practices, which only helps out with depth and the case for playing time.

If you check that link, they talk a good bit about Marlon Davidson’s injury and how it’s allowed Nick Coe more snaps in practice, but what about other defensive ends? Paul James III was the MVP of A-Day on defense, and he should end up having a good role this fall on the line.

And in case you were unsure, even in the NFL, everyone wants to be just like Auburn.

Final two weeks before kickoff, people. Buckle up! War Eagle.

Our collection of stories about the 2016 Auburn vs Arkansas game.

Not a whole lot of new information in this one. There are some statements on Kerryon Johnson's status and the status of the starting offensive line, but nothing definitive. I doubt we know anything for certain until the starting lineups are read by Ric Smith in Jordan-Hare Saturday night.

Gus let the 13 seconds from beating FSU eat at him for a while, so I'm not shocked losing in 4 overtimes to Arkansas last year still bothers him. It's especially frustrating when Auburn had 4th downs and chances to beat the Hawgs multiple times.

This is definitely a much better team than the one that started the season against Clemson. It's better on and off the field. A relaxed Gus is a much better Gus. I think Rhett Lashlee has adjusted very well to calling plays. Sean White continues to look better and better, and Rhett continues to find ways to make sure White is in the best situation.

Sean White is a much different QB than he was against Arkansas last season. He now has somewhere around a full season's worth of games under his belt. I'd like to think Arkansas' defense will approach him as if he's the same QB he was, but I know they won't.

Jimbo the Fisher is casting his lines in the wrong watering hole.

I'm sure by now many of you have seen Jimbo Fisher calling out Auburn in his press conference while attempting to explain how offenses are getting away with cheating on having linemen down field. That's one specific thing he pointed out for why offenses are more successful these days.

I'm honestly not sure why he brought up Auburn specifically (more on that at the end), but he did. It's not like Jimbo has just spent tons of pointless time studying Auburn film past 2013's BCS title game since it's been unlikely his Seminoles would face Auburn after that, so he would hardly be in a position to know exactly what Auburn's offense does and does't do at this point. He cited two specific situations, though, so, let's take a look at them.

The Marshall-to-Coates Pass

This is the primary one Jimbo cited. According to AL.com, Jimbo said Auburn had a lineman "7 yards down the field." I don't know about you, but no where in that video do I see a linemen 7 yards down the field. I see Jay Prosch blowing someone up 5-6 yards down the field, but as a fullback who lines up in the backfield, Prosch is well within his rights to go down field. The line is very close to being 3-4 yards downfield, but it's bang-bang on when Marshall throws the pass.

Jimbo Fisher needs some Kraft Singles to go with his whine. And he’s wrong. Picture of the play he’s whining about: https://t.co/T1JXTqshIn pic.twitter.com/sUd4cGkMut

— Will Collier (@willcollier) October 3, 2016

From this picture, you can see the Kozan is just barely beyond 3 yards down field, but you can also see that the ball has already left Marshall's hand. That play was called correctly. Sorry, Jimbo.

Of course, the funniest part about this particular play is that he said it cost Alabama a national championship. So, he's implying that Alabama would have beaten his Florida State team in the BCS Championship Game that season.

2015 Ole Miss Game

This is the strangest one, to me. He said that when Auburn played Ole Miss last year "they had a guy 6 yards down field." It does indeed seem to be the case from the cutups WarRoom Eagle did that Auburn had a man downfield illegally at one point. However, note his comment in the tweet:

I found it! Four yards, not six, but still illegal.
Plot twist: The refs penalized Auburn!https://t.co/ekqgrBe1Zy

— WarRoomEagle (@WarRoomEagle) October 3, 2016

Soooo... yeah, it was illegal. And it was called.

Auburn Doesn't Even Run Many RPOs!

He may have a legitimate complaint about teams that are very heavy on the run-pass-option (RPO) plays, but here's the thing... Auburn isn't one of those.

While many teams use it extensively, Auburn doesn't have many of them. WarRoom Eagle even broke down just how little Auburn used RPOs in 2013 & 2014 with Nick Marshall as the QB. He discovered that Auburn had all of two of them in the playbook, and one of those was a screen pass that wouldn't result in a lineman illegally down field, anyway. That is missing 2015, of course, but it's not like Auburn was successful on much of anything in 2015 on offense.

I don't know what Jimbo was getting at with all of this. Perhaps it was a way to deflect from the fact that his team has struggled in a few games this season, and they've played teams (Ole Miss, Louisville) who have more RPOs in their play book. They beat Ole Miss, but Hugh Freeze's playbook has quite a few more RPOs (and they use them much more often) than Auburn does, so it seems like they would have been a much better example.

I'm not saying Jimbo is wrong to complain about teams having illegal men downfield when running RPOs. I just think it's dumb to use Auburn as your poster child for it. It's reaching to try to bring in one of the more famous plays in the last few years and call it out as illegal when, in fact, it wasn't.

Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee spoke with the media tonight. All credit to the beat writers who were there.

Rhett Lashlee spoke to the media today, and he had quite a bit to say. Of course, the topic of the QB competition came up. He used all the typical buzz words/phrases you would expect. Sean is a better runner than people give him credit for, he has a strong arm, competitive, other QBs are behind him, etc.

He did have an interesting comment that John Franklin III was recruited as an athlete who would get a shot at QB. To me, that sounds like laying the groundwork for a positional change. He did say Franklin was still at QB, but Franklin's athleticism is impressive enough that it seems hard to keep him off the field except for a few plays per game in a wildcat situation. He stopped short of naming the back-up QB, but I'm guessing it's Jeremy Johnson. If JF3 were past JJ in terms of ability to pass/run the offense, he'd be the starter.

On the receivers, Kyle Davis sounds like he might not be quite as far along as we'd hope. That's unsurprising given he just started practicing at full speed last week. Marcus Davis being consistent is unsurprising; he's always been that way. As for Tony Stevens... that's disconcerting that he's still having the issues of making great plays and then fumbling the easy ones. The top three receivers on the team going into Week 1 will probably be Marcus Davis, Stevens, and Jason Smith, so I'm guessing we're going to need one of the young guys to step up in a hurry.

The Tigers are practicing tonight under the lights of Jordan-Hare Stadium and MOTHRATRON. It's good to get the players - especially the newcomers - adjusted to that monstrous screen.

Gus Malzahn will meet with the media Tuesday during his usual Game Week press conference time slot. That's right. GAME. WEEK. The long nightmare of the off-season is almost over. Hopefully, we'll have some updates on the status of Stephen Roberts, the depth-chart, and more.

With the first Game Week approaching, we're finally digging into the position groups to preview the 2016 Auburn Tigers.

With the season almost here, we're taking a look at previewing the 2016 Auburn Tigers by each position group. The previous entries can be found in this story stream!

Key Losses -

Chris Laye

Key Returnees -

Jalen Harris, Chandler Cox, Kamryn Pettway*, Robert Muschamp

Newcomers (includes redshirts) -

Landon Rice, Spencer Nigh

H-Back/FB - Chandler Cox is an absolute beast and could be the person we've been looking for to replace Jay Prosch. He played very well as a true freshman last year and now has more time under his belt. Of course, he may see some time at running back, too. That's where Kamryn Pettway has moved to full-time. I still included him in the list, here, because that versatility could see him on the field in an H-Back position on occasion if needed.

Spencer Nigh is a name to watch out for. Will he play? I don't know. He's 6'0, 272 lbs, a walk-on, and was a monster out in Texas in high school football. He's earned some pretty high praise from coaches and insiders, so there's a chance he could see time this year even as a walk-on true freshman.

Tight ends - Talent and size? Maybe? This is a position that was virtually non-existent last year. Jalen Harris and Chris Laye were on the field at times, but I don't think they were ever targeted with a single pass. That has to change this season. Laye is gone, but Jalen Harris and early enrollee Landon Rice are ready to step up in the Lutzenkirchen/Uzomah role. Some of the Tigers' biggest plays under Malzahn have come from throws to the tight end. With two players who meet the mold of past players at this position, hopefully they get back into the offense.

H-back/FB: Not concerned at all. Chandler Cox is more than capable of handling the position.

TE: We didn't see much of what Harris could do last year, and Rice is a true freshman. The TEs have been used in throw-backs and double-move passes to the corner of the end zone under Malzahn. Those are passes we really didn't see thrown last season. We didn't see much of any downfield passing after White got hurt. This position is a huge unknown, and that is the absolute biggest concern.

The H-back spot will be more than fine. We'll start to see a bit more of the TE used, but it's never been a huge part of Gus Malzahn's offense. They will be thrown to in some critical times, though, as Lutzie and Uzomah were. It will be a position similar to the offensive line: we'll have high praise for them when they make a big play, but most of the time we'll probably just forget they're there while they go about the business of doing their job to make the offense roll along effectively.

Our long Family nightmare is over.

Tonight in his press conference, Gus Malzahn ended the speculation that has been running rampant for the last few weeks since Fall Camp began. He named Sean White the starting QB for the opener against Clemson.

It's been a protracted battle, as with each passing week the speculation that John Franklin III was creeping up in the race. There have been times that Jeremy Johnson was said to be performing well, too. Still, most of the tea leaves were reading White for the majority of Spring and Fall Camp.

Defensive Coordinator Kevin Steele met with the media tonight following practice. See what he had to say! All credit to the beat writers who were there.

Tonight was Kevin Steele's turn to face the media following Auburn's return to the practice fields. So, right off the bat, we shouldn't even have to say that there's no update on the QB situation. That will come from Gus Malzahn himself. He's supposed to meet with the media later this week, but he could name the starter at any time.*

Did anything special come out of Steele's time with the media? They're not focusing on Clemson, yet. That's understandable, since Clemson does run a similar offense to Auburn's. That works both ways, too, if you want to be a bit depressed. Marshall Taylor's contributions Week 1 will depend on Marshall Taylor. He singled out Dontavius Russell (who was pretty good as a redshirt freshman last season) and Josh Holsey (pronounced HOLE-zee; I've been saying HOLE-see for years!) as big parts of the defense so far. Paul James III, too.

I'm trying not to be too optimistic about this defense. Kevin Steele's history hasn't been the best as a DC, so maybe that should help. There's just so much talent and potential on it, though. I'm even starting to get excited about the linebackers and I have nothing to justify that other than blind confidence in Travis Williams (and Kevin Steele himself).

Bonus Jeff Holland quotes!

I'm impressed by Holland, here. He admits his head wasn't in the game as much early on at Auburn. He was starting to be exciting by the end of the season, though, so if he's really turned it on, then he could be a great one. One of the offensive linemen (Golson, maybe?) did say a few weeks ago that Holland was the second best pass rusher behind Lawson (hence his comment on ranking, I bet).

Both Holland and Paul James III spoke highly of Carl Lawson. We've heard repeatedly over the last few years about how Carl Lawson studies every aspect of the game. He should go on to a great NFL career, but I'm thrilled at the prospect of what he'll be able to bring to the game as a coach one day, too, should he go that route.

Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee met with the media following Thursday's practice. He had some good news to relate! All credit to the beat writers who were there.

Rhett Lashlee met with the media, tonight. No, there's no update on the QB race. However, if you expected Lashlee to name the starter instead of Gus Malzahn, you were pretty crazy in the first place. Maybe we'll know more there when Gus Malzahn meets with the media following Saturday's practice.

There is a lot of good things in there, though. I like how he mentions the team chemistry is great and how he praises Chandler Cox as a leader. Having vocal leaders on this team is something that didn't seem to be there last year from the outside looking in. It's even more impressive of Cox since he's a true sophomore.

Oh, and Kyle Davis may be back full speed, soon. That warrants some excitement. I was curious about that, since there was this tweet earlier with some receivers practicing. Look closely and it appears #11 is in there catching balls. #11 would be Kyle Davis.

It's nice to see it confirmed by Lashlee that he's almost back to full speed. Another good part of that video? No drops!

There's some bits from Cameron Toney at the bottom, too. I'm really hoping Travis Williams is able to coach those linebackers up to play like he did. If he can, then we're going to have a much stronger linebacker corps than anyone expects. Toney also gives us some good injury news by confirming that Tre Williams is back from his ankle injury and is on the practice field again.

Quentin Riggins' voice has reported some of the biggest events in Auburn history. Now, after 25 years, he's stepping aside and letting another Auburn legend take over.

An official release by the University this afternoon announced the news, saying

"Quentin has been a beloved member of the Auburn Sports Network team for such a long time and his work has been appreciated by the entire Auburn Family," Auburn Sports Properties Vice President and General Manager Chris Davis said. "While it is difficult to replace someone like him, Ronnie Brown is a natural successor and his expertise will be a great asset to the broadcasts."

The man that will be taking over for "Q" is someone well-known and beloved by all Tiger fans for his part in one of the most dynamic backfields Auburn has ever had: Ronnie Brown.

Brown was at Auburn from 2000-2004, helping lead the team to an undefeated season in 2004. He rushed for 2,707 yards in his Auburn career before going on to an 11 year stint in the NFL with four different teams.

“I am always excited to come back to the Plains, but I'm elated to be the new sideline reporter following in Quentin’s footsteps,” Brown said. “It's a great opportunity that I'm looking forward to, and I’m approaching it in the same manner as I did when I was an athlete.”

The Voice of the Auburn Tigers, Rod Bramblett, had this to say on Twitter:

It's tough following a legend...best way to do it is bring in another one. Excited to have Ronnie on board! https://t.co/A0Ayaf01ir

Thanks for all of the memories, Q. You've been a huge part of my life over the last 25 years. Ronnie holds a special place in the heart, already, and I can't wait to hear his voice carrying on that tradition of excellence.

The Tigers were once again on the field this Sunday afternoon, the first day in pads. See what the beat writers noted during the media viewing window and check out the tweets from Gus Malzahn's press conference!

I've tried splitting these into two to get more info out as quickly as possible the last few days, but I just was't able to do it, today. So, you're getting the practice updates and the press conference stuff in one. Also of note is the fact that this is the last practice with a media viewing window. So, all we'll really have from here until the season starts are press conference updates.

Of note, Stephen Davis Jr was just late the other day, appears to have been late today, and may be working with the injured players. They do also say that Mike Horton was getting a lot of work at Right Guard. That could be for a number of reasons, but I'm sure they'd like to have some experienced depth there in case of either injury or just prepping for the fact that Smith will be gone to the NFL after this season.

AL.com has the interesting tidbit in their recap of JF3 working as the holder. Potential for a lot of fakes or Gus wanting to keep teams on their toes? Maybe we'll see the return of the swinging gate and 2-point tries?

247Sports noted the starting lineups on offense, again. That's where they noted Horton working with the first team. Kam Martin working with the first team should also be of note, since we'll probably see him early and often as the speed back.

Also on the running backs, going down to the bottom video of Kerryon Johnson fielding kicks... he has visibly bulked up. I hadn't really taken note in the other pictures/video, but you can tell he's bigger this year. That is good news for how much more he's going to have to tote the rock.

PRESS CONFERENCE

Not many tweets, but a fair bit of information! So, to run it down, Stephen Davis Jr is out for the year (rehabbing an injury from high school), Marshall Taylor is expected back with the team next week (though he'll have to go through the NCAA mandated warm-up before he can put on pads), and Tre Williams tweaked an ankle but is expected back out there, soon.

Out of all of that, the Tre Williams bit is the only really important thing, to me, right now. Davis Jr wasn't someone I expected to contribute much this season, even if he did play running back. Marshall Taylor is just added depth and experience. Williams, though... Williams is the returning linebacker from last season's team who has the most time and experience in an actual game. Sure, T.J. Neal is the most experienced overall, but Williams was the other presumed starter. We really need him healthy.

The scrimmage information should be nice. Unfortunately, I don't know how much information we're going to get out of it other than what we can glean from players in their press conferences and from "insider" reports on various websites. Any insiders who manage to be there, feel free to send any scoops my way!

As for the quarterbacks, I'm still leaning towards Sean White getting the nod as the starter. That could always change without a doubt, but right now that's my thought.

And now to the Tweets!

Is there anything of note from Day 2 of Auburn's 2016 Fall Camp? Let's check in on the tweets from the beat writers about the viewing period and then we'll get to Gus Malzahn's press conference at the bottom.

Can we talk about how Nate Craig-Myers looks like he could be in an NFL training camp? He's huge. The Tigers will have some real weapons in these freshmen wide receivers.

GUS MALZAHN PC

So, Stephen Davis Jr is starting out at running back? Well, he's got the size, talent, and pedigree for it. It's interesting that Gus says he'll probably end up at Safety. I knew he was going back to D, but with that size I almost figured him more for a linebacker if he bulks up. Either way, he's not a bad option to carry the ball.

All of the late arrivals have been cleared? WOOOOO!!! Nick Coe thrills me, y'all. I didn't want to lose him to a JUCO and then have to recruit him again. He's an absolute beast as a 6'6 255 lbs state champion wrestler. Add some weight and he could destroy OLs on the interior or beat tackles around the edge.

The players all have good things to say, too. I hope Kerryon Johnson gets to the podium a whole lot more. He's also a great Twitter follow, too. I don't follow many players, but he's definitely one of them.

Let's just get to the Tweets, though, shall we?

The first preseason poll of the year was released today as the Amway Coaches Poll came out. Auburn does not have a spot in the poll, but I don’t think that’s exactly unexpected. The Tigers did fall into the “others receiving votes” category, though!

So, why am I write about the Coaches Poll? Well, let’s see how Auburn’s schedule looks through the eyes of the rankings.

Week 1, Clemson: #2

Week 2, Arkansas State: NR

Week 3, Texas A&M: NR (though close)

Week 4, LSU: #6

Week 5, ULM: NR

Week 6, Mississippi State: NR

Week 7, Off: Hey, don’t count out “Off.”

Week 8, Arkansas: NR

Week 9, Ole Miss: #12

Week 10, Vanderbilt: NR

Week 11, Georgia: #16

Week 12, Alabama A&M: NR

Week 13, Alabama: #1

OK, so, call me crazy, but if the teams played are actually well-represented by their current rankings, then this is not as bad of a schedule as it looked previously. At no point does Auburn face two ranked teams back-to-back. The teams in bold represent home games.

Let’s say the rankings stay the same and Auburn is the outlier. Maybe the Tigers shock people. This is a set-up that could allow them to do it. A highly ranked team, followed by two unranked teams, and then another match-up with a highly ranked team. That gives time off to recover and rebuild. Then there isn’t a ranked team on the schedule before traveling to Ole Miss in Week 9. I like that!

Although, the schedule does close with three road games against ranked teams. I don’t like that.

We all know, though, that these rankings are not indicative of the way the teams will actually play on the field this year. Texas A&M probably should have been ranked. Who knows what Mississippi State and Arkansas may be like. LSU still has Leonard Fournette, but the Tigers always manage to give them a good game in Jordan-Hare, and if the offense is working and the defense can get some stops, I like the history there.

So, what does the pre-season poll really tell us about Auburn’s schedule? Not much. It’s still going to be tough. It’s going to be even tougher in the early going as the Tigers try to figure out who is going to be the feature back and get used to whichever players wins the starting QB roll.

There’s a chance, though. There’s a chance for the Tigers to do something with this.
