The last time the Arizona State Sun Devils (2-3, 1-1 Pac-12) beat a ranked team isn’t out of reach — in September against No. 24 Oregon. Their last top-10 win came just two years prior in Pasadena, beating UCLA on 38-23 in October of 2015.

But the last time the Sun Devils beat a top-5 ranked opponent: Sept. 21, 1996 against No. 1 Nebraska.

On Saturday, the No. 5 Washington Huskies (6-0, 2-0 Pac-12) venture into Sun Devil Stadium equipped with a sound defense, veteran coach and most notably, talented quarterback Jake Browning.

“He’s a winner,” ASU head coach Todd Graham said. “He’s a championship quarterback, and as far as I’m concerned, he sets the standard in our league because you prove it on the football field every week.”

Browning, who is 25-8 overall as a starter, is 18-2 since the start of his sophomore season. From 2015 to 2016, Browning nearly tripled his touchdown total from 16 to 43 and almost doubled his team’s wins, from 7 to 12. He put the Huskies in the College Football Playoff last season, proving himself closer to a “championship quarterback.”

But what is most mind boggling is Browning’s efficiency. He won’t try to outpass teams.

His 244.3 passing yards per game rank seventh in the conference, and light years behind Pac-12 leading UCLA QB Josh Rosen who averages 427 passing yards per game. Even ASU QB Manny Wilkins is a major leap ahead, averaging 290.4 passing yards per performance.

But again, it isn’t about how much he throws it. In 2016, Browning had the 10th best quarterback rating in the country (81.3). His 2017 QBR (79) is 13th best in the nation and No. 1 among all current starting Pac-12 quarterbacks. He’s completed 123 of 173 pass attempts this season with a 70.5 percent completion rate, which is good for a Pac-12 best besides Luke Falk.

“Really solid decision maker. Extends plays a lot better than what you think he does. There’s a lot of guys who get a lot more attention, but he just wins football games,” Graham said. “Doesn’t require a lot of credit for it. That’s what I like about him. I really like his demeanor and his personality. You can tell he’s a high character kid.”

What has protected and complimented Browning’s Huskies to championship contending play are the men directly in front of him and sometimes beside of behind him. The offensive line has propelled the Huskies into a so far undefeated season.

Washington has given up just six sacks all season. The Sun Devils on the other hand, gave up seven sacks in a game alone against New Mexico State.

Defensively, Arizona State failed to record a single sack against Stanford, doing very little damage to the offensive line, and making easy leg room for Stanford running back Bryce Love, who had a career day with 301 yards on the ground.

Compared to Arizona State’s 647 rushing yards, the Huskies have attained over 1,000 yards on the season thanks not only to leading rusher Myles Gaskin (559 yards, eight touchdowns), but an extra push from its offensive line.

“They’re offensive line is very good. Very physical,” Graham said. “You gotta stop the run. I mean Gaskin is a really good back. Coleman is a really good back as well. I think where they’ve really matured is the offensive line.”

Going into Saturday’s matchup, Graham is well aware of the state of the Sun Devils. At 2-3, he admitted his team got off to a “slower start” than he’d like, but see’s the end of the season far more important than the beginning.

“Where everybody thinks everybody is in week one, it’s not. It’s where you are as you progress through the season. Where you are in November and you know how you’re team develops,” Graham said. “I think we played our best game against Oregon. We did some good things against Stanford. We didn’t tackle enough to win that game and they were the better team. But I feel confident in where we’re at.”

The Arizona State Sun Devils may have a lot of question marks on the defensive side of the ball, but few of them come in the linebacking corps. The senior-laden starting unit will likely be the most important unit on the defense, because if they break down, it’s going to be a bad time for the Sun Devils.

SAM

Senior DJ Calhoun — The hard-hitting ‘backer has been a mainstay through four years in the front seven, providing a burst stopping the run and getting to the quarterback. Calhoun led the Sun Devils with 77 total tackles in 2016 with 111⁄2 coming behind the line of scrimmage, including 41⁄2 sacks.

WILL

Redshirt junior Christian Sam — Sam missed all but one game a season ago with an injury sustained against NAU, but he has looked ready to go during fall camp. He recorded 98 tackles his sophomore season and will be an asset when it comes to eliminating big plays from what should be short gains of which ASU gave up a lot last season in his absence.

DEVIL

Senior Koron Crump — The explosive rusher is back for more quarterback hits in 2017 after being one of two non-specialist Sun Devils to be named to an All-Pac-12 team in 2016. His nine sacks placed him tied for third in the Pac-12 and first among returners. He also generated takeaways, intercepting a pass, forcing three fumbles and recovering three fumbles.

Who else to watch

The second unit at practice has consistently been junior Abraham Thompson, redshirt sophomore Khaylan Thomas, and redshirt sophomore Malik Lawal, with freshman Kyle Soelle and junior Deion Guignard rotating in. With that stable of eight rotating in, the linebackers should be set up for success in 2017.

Some guy with seven catches calling out the Wildcats’ defense

Rivalry Week...oh how wonderful you are.

Some call it hate week, and sometimes that’s the better name for it, like in this case, with Arizona State Sun Devils tight end Kody Kohl:

"Man, I hate this school,'' Kohl said of the Arizona Wildcats to AZ Central on Tuesday. "To be honest, I grew up bleeding maroon and gold, so we've always hated that place. I don't even like going down there."

I’ll be honest, I have no idea who Kody Kohl is. And why don’t I? Probably because the dude has seven catches for 93 yards this year. 67 of those yards and two of those catches came against Texas Tech.

But he’s ready to make us remember him.

"This is my last go-around during the season,'' he said. "We'll probably get a bowl game, which will be great, but this is the last time I get to go against U of A, and I want to make them remember me, for sure."

But wait. It gets better.

"A lot of people seem to be running all over them,'' Kohl added about Arizona’s defense. "People are being aggressive and knocking them over and things like that. I think they do have some good skill, and they might have some good coaches, but I haven't seen too much out of them."

Oh, and Tim White is all about that criticism life too.

"There's a lot of holes everywhere on the field,'' White said. "We just want to exploit that."

At least White has 52 catches and 644 yards this year.

If a guy that has five catches and 26 yards over the course of ten games actually makes us remember him, that’s fine. But I’m guessing he’ll feel it a little bit more on Friday night for these comments.

This is the part of the year where “it starts counting.”

The Arizona State Sun Devils are off to a 3-0 start, though the three victories haven’t come with the greatest amount of comfort.

For head coach Todd Graham, that’s just fine. With the California Golden Bears set to visit Tempe this weekend, Graham discussed his team’s record, who’s stood out, what can be improved and what he sees in Cal during his weekly presser on Monday.

On starting 3-0

“We’re pleased to be 3-0. Growing and learning, and getting better each week.

“Now it all starts over. We kind of break the season up into non-conference, and then obviously you got nine conference games to see if you play a tenth one. And this is where it starts counting.

“So we’re really pleased to be where we’re at, and looking forward to having Cal in here and starting conference play.

“I think we’ll almost be back at full strength as far as not having everybody out. We’ve still got a couple of guys that need to hear up.”

Returning this week

Salamo Fiso

“I’m glad to have him back.”

Graham confirmed Monday that the senior linebacker will return this week after missing the first three games because of suspension. Fiso led ASU in tackles last year with 101 total and 22.5 takedowns for loss. Graham said he expects for there to be a transition period, but added “he’s a veteran.”

Tim White, Zach Robertson, George Lea

“But we’ll definitely have Salamo (Fiso) and (receiver) Tim White. And I think (offensive lineman Zach Roberston) will be back and (defensive lineman George Lea) will be back on defense. So that’s gonna help.”

White’s presence on offense was dearly missed. Meanwhile the return Robertson replenishes an offensive line that’s performed well, and Lea’s return adds depth along the defensive front.

On Facing Cal

Cal’s Bear Raid

“(Cal offensive coordinator) Jay Spavital worked with me at Tulsa, so he’s got his own little flare that he puts on it. It’s a little different.

Davis Webb

“Obvioulsy he’s a veteran. He’s tall, he’s really difficult to sack and get down. You get a hold of him and he’s still able to get the ball out. he’s a very good quarterback. you can tell he’s really gelled with his players.

“They’re very physical. I was very, very impressed with their physicality and the heart they showed against Texas. Very similar scheme. I think they’re one of the top two offenses in the country passing the ball.

“Their running backs are really, really good. What makesit so difficult is they make you defend sideline to sideline. They’ve got really good personnel. Obviously, the strength of their team is their offense and their ability to score points.”

Quarterback Davis Webb was the starting quarterback for Texas Tech when the Sun Devils fell to the Red Raiders 37-23 in the 2013 Holiday Bowl. He threw for 403 yards and four touchdowns. This week, instead of Jakeem Grant, ASU will be tasked with stopping Webb from finding Chad Hansen—someone Graham noted as being a passionate player and key target—with regularity.

Graham noted that Cal likes to utilize two-back sets featuring a fullback to lead the way for running backs Khalfani Muhammad and Vic Enwere. Graham said both of them are talented runners, lauding Muhammad’s speed and Enwere’s power.

On Cal momentum

“They had a close game that they lost to San Diego State… but then they came back and beat the No. 11-ranked team in the country.”

Graham said the Golden Bears will come into Tempe with plenty of momentum coming off of a 50-43 win over then-No. 11 Texas. He compared Cal’s defeat to SDSU with ASU’s escape last week versus UTSA, and said he hasn’t forgotten that last year’s bout with Cal finished with a three-point margin.

On what ASU can improve on

Tackling

“We’ve gotta get better fundamentally. We’ve gotta get better at tackling, especially in space.

A lot of that is controlling our energy and just really working on our fundamentals. Our tracking kind of stuff.”

ASU missed on 22 tackles last game, including 10 on a third or fourth down play.

Turning the ball over

“The turnover ratio deal is the No. 1 thing, it’s our No. 1 focus right now. We’ve gotta get takeaways, and we’ve gotta take care of the football.

“It’s a long time since I’ve been minus-3 and been successful in a game. So we overcame some adversity, but we really need to take care of the football. Going into this game, it’s going to be vital, the turnover ratio.”

The Sun Devils turned the ball over twice on their own side of the field (although both occurred on special teams), and UTSA converted both resulting possessions into points. Against a high-octane Cal offense, Graham is making sure to emphasize ball security this weekend.

Moeakiola at SPUR

“Yeah, just stabilizes us, I think. We’re still talking about that. Obviously, he’ll do whatever we need us to do. Pretty good likelihood that’s probably gonna happen.”

Laiu Moeakiola is expected to see more time at SPUR after starting the year off at safety.

Manny Wilkins protecting himself

“He’s tough as nails, and I don’t want him to play cautious. ... Learning how to play that way takes a lot of experience.”

Wilkins took a big shot and wasn’t able to fully execute a hurdle over a defender against UTSA. Still, Graham says he isn’t going to keep his quarterback from utilizing his athleticism to make big plays; so long as he protects himself.

Standouts

AJ McCollum

“I tell him he’s an old-school center. He’s just an old, tough, man blood-and-guts kind of guy. He really just brings a lot of physicality in the run game. He’s a guy that really likes coming off the football, hitting people.”

McCollum started at center each of the past two games after Robertson was forced out of the lineup and linemen Quinn Bailey and Stephon McCray slid to right tackle and guard, respectively. Graham said McCollum is still raw, but has been a great contributor.

N’Keal Harry

“He’s really doing a good job for us. He’s continuing to get better. I think he’s staying very humble and very hungry. And obviously, he’s a very gifted young man. I think coach (Jay) Norvell is doing a great job in developing him. He’s definitely a threat for us. And a guy that’s not only getting it done catching the ball, but he’s doing a great job blocking, he’s learning and he’s getting better at everything he’s doing. He’s a guy that is definitely a playmaker for us.”

Harry was named Pro Football Focus’ highest-rated receiver in all of Division I football to this point in the season, and Graham reinforced the idea his stardom is rising. Through three games, he leads ASU in receiving yards (181) and has scored three total times.

On team attitude

“I love this team. I love their attitude.

“I always say this at the beginning of every season, maybe for the last 10 or 15 years: You have to win the close games. And we’ve had a few of those so far. And none of them have been easy, but we’ve found a way to win them.”

Through three games, ASU’s combined winning margin is 48. We don’t expect that to increase by much against Cal, but Graham does think this is a gritty unit that can dig out tightly-contested tilts.

Todd Graham discussed the Sun Devils playing in Texas as well as much more in his weekly press conference.

Anybody who has heard Todd Graham speak knows the head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils hails from Texas.

Because of Graham’s history and relationships within the state, Texas has become one of Arizona State’s top recruiting areas, with over a dozen players on the ASU roster hailing from the Lone Star State.

“Obviously that’s my home state and we recruit there and have a lot of players on our football team from the state,” Graham said at his weekly press conference.

Saturday’s game against UTSA marks the third time in the last four years that the Sun Devils have played a game in Texas. In 2013, the Sun Devils played against Notre Dame in Dallas and ASU opened last season in Houston against Texas A&M.

Next season, the Sun Devils will play Texas Tech in Lubbock and in 2022 the Sun Devils will play a road game against Oklahoma State, which boarders Texas.

“It’s hard to recruit a place you don’t play,” Graham said. “And our third-largest alumni base is in Texas. We always have great turnouts and support when we go there. We played Notre Dame in Dallas and Houston were both great turnouts.”

In 2016, Arizona State signed three recruits from Texas, including four-star quarterback Dillon Sterling-Cole. In their 2017 class, ASU already has three commitments from the Lone Star State.

“Obviously our home base is in this state (Arizona) and a gas tank away in Southern California but I think if you look at outside of our base of area, that (Texas) is a very significant area for us to recruit, Graham said.”

New Faces on Offensive Line Impress

There were plenty of standouts on the offensive side of the ball in Arizona State’s victory over Texas Tech but one unit that Graham was particularly impressed with was his offensive line.

Starting right tackle Zach Robertson was forced to miss the game with a lower leg injury and that forced RG Quinn Bailey out to tackle and starting center Stephon McCray to guard.

Junior college transfer A.J. McCollum made his first career start at center last Saturday night.

“You wanna know a person I’m excited about? I’m excited about A.J.,” said Graham. “A.J. played really well. The physicality he played with, we were really knocking them (Tech) off the football.”

The two primary statistics that an offensive line is judged off of are sacks allowed and rushing yards. Against Texas Tech, Manny Wilkins was not sacked one time and ASU tallied 301 yards on the ground.

“With four new starters up front, the potential of that group is extremely high,” Graham said.

Sun Devils on the Move

Arizona State is working with a new technology this season that helps track their players during games. There is a chip implemented in the shoulder pads of ASU players that tracks the distance the players are moving throughout the game.

“Our two corners (Gump Hayes and Kareem Orr) in that game did the equivalent of four miles,” Graham said. “Where you are going to feel the effects of that is not in week four, five and six. It’s in week eleven, twelve and thirteen.”

Graham said that with this new technology they might change practice habits and the amount of times they sub players during games.

“We might need to have Kareem cover a few less punts or a few less kicks or maybe on first down we sub him out,” Graham said.

Besides the ASU defensive backs, Graham noted that tight end Kody Kohl, wide receiver Tim White and running backs Kalen Ballage and Demario Richard are all covering over four miles per game.

Notes

The September 24 game between ASU and Cal will kickoff at 7 p.m. PT and be televised on ESPN2.

Kalen Ballage, to nobody’s surprise, has won Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week. Ballage was also named to the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll and also honored as the Rose Bowl Game Pac-12 Player of the Week, and CBS National Player of the Week.

Graham told reporters that Jay Jay Wilson is expected back this week and they “hope” to have RT Zach Robertson available for Friday’s game. Linebacker Salamo Fiso is not going to play Friday but could return for the start of conference play on Sept. 24.

After a long, anxious offseason full of coaching turnover and position battles, game week is finally here for the 2016 Arizona State Sun Devils. The regular season begins this Saturday against Northern Arizona - a formidable FCS opponent coming out of the Big Sky. Here is your first look at the Lumberjacks.

Head Coach - Jerome Souers

After serving as defensive coordinator with Montana for nine seasons, Souers was named the head coach of Northern Arizona back in 1998. It's a position that he has held ever since.

Souers has posted a 107-97 record in his time in Flagstaff, taking his team to the postseason four times.

The Lumberjacks will run a pro-style, no-huddle scheme offensively for a second straight season. On defense, where Souers' teams have traditionally shined, Northern Arizona will throw a lot of Cover 3 and Cover 4 looks at Arizona State.

Souers and company finished the 2015 season with a record of 7-4, with all three of their losses against FCS opponents coming by two possessions or less.

Quarterback Case Cookus is back from that team, as is their top receiver and second-leading rusher in the ground game. That high-powered offense figures to be just as explosive again this season, which is a big reason why the Lumberjacks were voted 18th in the preseason FCS Coaches' Poll.

Quarterback - Case Cookus

Things couldn't have gone much better for Cookus in his freshman campaign a year ago. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound quarterback threw for 37 touchdowns and ran for three more, earning him the honor of being named the FCS STATS Freshman of the Year.

His best game came in a 63-21 victory on Halloween against Northern Colorado, in which Cookus threw for seven touchdowns and 363 yards. He has played just one contest against an FBS opponent - last September at Arizona - in which he completed eight of 13 passes before sitting out the second half of the blowout win for the Wildcats.

[embedded content]

Key Defensive Players

Linebacker Jake Thomas - Thomas led Northern Arizona in sacks a season ago, posting four and a half to go along with 68 total tackles. The senior from Mesa figures to lead Souers' defense in 2016 and will definitely be a player to watch on Saturday as he returns to the Valley.

Cornerback Maurice Davison - The young Lumberjacks secondary should be bolstered by sophomore corner Maurice Davison, who was tied for second on the team in his freshman campaign with five pass breakups despite only playing in 11 games.

Who is practice on the Sun Devil scout team? Our Tuesday practice report gives you all the latest information on ASU football.

In its last non-game-week of fall practice, Arizona State continued its preseason preparations for the 2016 season. Media viewed stretching and individual drills today.

Prep begins for NAU:

Head coach Todd Graham said the team began prep for its season-opener against NAU llast weekend, saying the team is focused on making sure it doesn’t beat itself.

“Early in the year is much like when you wait 30, 40 days for a bowl game,” Graham said. “Don’t do the things to beat yourself. We’re really focusing on discipline.”

Graham added that the pace of practice is a little different because of the nature of working against the scout team, but also mentioned there wasn’t much of a change today.

“Sometimes it kind of slows things down a bit because it’s a lot faster pace when you’re doing good-on-good.” Graham said. “We’re doing a lot more than normal good-on-good just to keep that pace up there.”

Senior wideout Tim White echoed the same sentiment.

“It doesn’t really change much,” White said. “I feel like we have a lot of experienced guys who’ve been there and done it, so we’re just getting the young guys up to par... We’ve been focused all fall camp, and I feel like our guys are motivated to do good things.”

Injury report:

Only DUDE was in a green non-contact jersey today, but several players were on Muscle Beach today. Among them was redshirt senior tight end Kody Kohl and redshirt junior defensive back James Johnson, who was wearing a bulky brace on his right knee.

Scout team:

For the first time this fall, scout team jerseys were donned. A few notables were redshirt freshman running back Jason Lewis, redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Connor Humphries, and freshman cornerback Chase Lucas.

The temperature isn’t the only thing that is hot in Tempe.

Competition, competition, competition.

Competition was certainly the buzzword for Arizona State Sun Devils head coach Todd Graham after Thursday morning’s practice.

"There’s been a lot of competition everywhere," says Graham. "Offensive line, quarterback, secondary. There’s competition at linebacker. There’s competition up front."

While position battles may still be heated at numerous positions for the Sun Devils, no contests are more hot, and important, than the ones at quarterback and throughout the offensive line.

Under center (and in shotgun), the race between freshman Brady White and sophomore Manny Wilkins is still about as tight as it can be. The pair continue to alternate reps with the first team offense, and Graham wasn’t about to give away any information on who may or may not be pulling ahead in the competition.

"Sometimes when they walk on the field, there’s a little bit of space in between them," Graham deadpanned. "That’s it."

It’s a good bet that whoever ends up starting the maroon and gold’s season opener on September 3 will be the quarterback who controls the ball best.

After only turning the ball over 13 times and finishing sixth in the country in turnover margin two years ago, Arizona State took a step back in its 2015 campaign. That number spiked to 19 last season, and with just 21 turnovers forced, the team finished outside of the top-50 in turnover margin.

Graham and company have identified a return to their ball security ways of the past as one of their top focuses as fall camp presses on.

"Waking up tomorrow," joked Graham when originally asked what worries him the most.

After pausing, the head coach then continued.

"Making sure we get back to turnover ratio football is the biggest thing. So obviously, that is at that quarterback position. Our main three focuses are still the quarterback, offensive line, and secondary. And waking up in the morning."

Competition remains stiff on that young but intriguing offensive line as the season fast approaches. While senior Evan Goodman has the left tackle spot locked up, nearly every other spot on the line continues to be battled for.

"Evan is the guy I’ve really been impressed with," Graham says. "You can tell he's in his fifth year - his last year - and I'm really liking his maturity. But all of those guys have impressed me at one point."

Left guard Sam Jones, center Stephon McCray, right guard Quinn Bailey, and right tackle Zach Robertson were all immediately identified as guys who have looked good as of late to Graham, and coincidentally or not, all four played with the first-team offense in the 11-on-11 drill that was open to the media on Thursday.

Those positions are far from locked down, however, as guys like freshmen Steve Miller and Cohl Cabral, sophomores Alex Losoya and Connor Humphreys, and JC transfer A.J. McCollum continue to work their way into two-deep and situational roles.

"We just have to get steady everywhere," says Graham. "We've had some consistency but there's been competition at the center position, tackle positions, and the guard positions. So we'll have a big evaluation in Saturday’s scrimmage and kind of settle in there before we get prepared for the first game."

After using the 2015 season to adjust from the move from defensive line to offensive line, Graham says Humphreys is competing hard for a two-deep spot at guard.

"Connor’s one of those guys at guard who is right there competing for the two deep," Graham says. "We have got a lot of competition with that group. Saturday is going to be a big evaluation day for everybody (on the line)."

Yes, Saturday’s scrimmage will be important for everyone. Whether it is the young offensive linemen, the two frontrunners at quarterback, or at numerous other spots on the field, the scrimmage will mark the final opportunity for players to show off before game-planning for Northern Arizona begins in earnest next week.

Just as the case has been for all of fall camp, there will surely be a lot of competition.

Fall camp continues to roll on for Arizona State.

The Arizona State Sun Devils continued its preseason preparations today outside on the Kajikawa practice fields. The media was allowed to view stretching in addition to individual and 11-on-11 drills.

Mixing it up:

During the “takeaway” period, ASU offense and defense flipped roles as the offensive coaches worked with the defense and vice versa.

Some of it went along just fine:

Some of it... less so:

Saturday scrimmage:

Head coach Todd Graham said the team will conduct a scrimmage on Saturday and that it will be a “big evaluation” for every position, most importantly the quarterback battle between Manny Wilkins and Brady White.

“It’s been very competitive, but Saturday will be a huge evaluation for the quarterback position as well as every other position,” Graham said.

Graham is putting an emphasis, as always, on turnover ratio and is looking for which quarterback takes care of the ball the best. When asked if either QB is putting any distance between the other, Graham said:

“Sometimes when they walk on the field, there’s a little bit of space in between them. That’s it.”

So that reveals a lot.

Injury update:

Junior defensive back Mo Chandler and redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jalen Harvey were both in green but participated in most drills today. Neither were seen during the team period. Redshirt senior Laiu Moeakiola and redshirt senior Salamo Fiso were not seen while the media was at practice.

“We’ve had a lot of, not major stuff, but a lot of missed practices and stuff on the back end,” Graham said. “We just got to get some steadiness there.”

Two-minute Drill:

Media viewed a couple series of 11-on-11 today. The defense worked in a nickel set for a portion as well.

First-team offense:

QB: Manny Wilkins

RB: Demario Richard

WR (outside): Cam Smith, Ellis Jefferson

WR (slot): Tim White

TE (slot): Raymond Epps

LT: Evan Goodman

LG: Sam Jones

C: Stephon McCray

RG: Quinn Bailey

RT: Zach Robertson

First-team defense:

DT: Ami Latu

3-tech: Tashon Smallwood

Devil: JoJo Wicker

SAM: DJ Calhoun

SPUR: Koron Crump

WILL: Christian Sam

Corner: Kareem Orr, Gump Hayes, Tyler Whiley

Bandit safety: Chad Adams

Field safety: J’Marcus Rhodes

Monday's practice marked the Sun Devils' official start of preparation for their season-opening matchup against Northern Arizona on Sept. 3. The session started on the field outside of the Verde Dickey Dome with the players wearing shells (helmets and shoulder pads).

Media was permitted to view stretching, followed by three drill periods before the team headed inside the facility for full-team, 11-on-11 work. Period A consisted of takeaway drills, Period B focused on pursuit, and Period C included tempo and special teams work.

Players in Green

Linebackers Salamo Fiso, Khaylan Thomas and Carlos Mendoza, running back Kalen Ballage, receiver Jalen Harvey, offensive linemen Marshal Nathe and Tyson Rising, and defensive backs Dasmond Tautalatasi, Maurice Chandler and James Johnson were sporting non-contact jerseys today. Most were able to take part in individual drills.

Offensive lineman A.J. McCollum was out of a green contact jersey, and was in pads on Monday.

Tempo

During tempo, two offensive units worked through a series without facing the defense, with each drive starting around their own 35-yard line. Here's how the offense lined up:

First Team

OL: Evan Goodman (LT), Sam Jones (LG), Stephon McCray (C), Quinn Bailey (RG), Zach Robertson (RT)

QB: Manny Wilkins

RB: Demario Richard

WR/TE: Ellis Jefferson (X), Tim White (slot), Kody Kohl (TE, slot), Cameron Smith (Z)

Second Team

OL: Steven Miller (LT), Connor Humphreys (LG), Cohl Cabral (C), Cade Cote (RG), Mason Walter (RT)

QB: Brady White

RB: Nick Ralston

WR/TE: N'Keal Harry (X), Fred Gammage (slot), Raymond Epps (TE, slot), Jalen Harvey (Z)

Special Teams

Texas transfer Ryan Newsome and freshman receiver Kyle Williams were back fielding punts during the special teams portion.

NFL at Practice

The Seattle Seahawks and Miami Dolphins had scouts in attendance at Monday's practice.

The Dolphins scout was former ASU cornerback Lenny McGill, who played for the Sun Devils from 1990-94, and earned an All-Pac-10 honorable mention during his senior season. He played in the NFL for six years before beginning his scouting career in 2000.

Quotes

The Sun Devils scrimmaged last week which lasted “around 130 snaps.” Head coach Todd Graham discussed his takeaways.

“Lots of newcomer guys stood out to me.” - Graham said that running backs Demario Richard and Kalen Ballage and wide receiver Tim White were held out of the scrimmage, allowing other guys to get an opportunity to play in a live setting.

Freshman receiver Kyle Williams scored a touchdown, according to Graham. Thus far, Williams been a standout in fall camp, and Graham said he was “someone who’s exceeded our expectation.”

J’Marcus Rhodes, Marcus Ball, Renell Wren, Jalen Bates, George Lea and D.J. Calhoun were players Graham named who also stood out.

“I like that all of our running backs are different.” With Ballage and Richard out, Nick Ralston and Jacom Brimhall saw reps and stood out in the backfield.

The Sun Devil defense forcing turnovers was the highlights of the open portion of practice on Friday.

The Sun Devils held an afternoon practice session inside of the Verde Dickey Dome Friday.

Media was allowed to view stretches, team drills emphasizing agility, ball security, and stance-to-start, a couple of situational 11-on-11 series, and special teams drills.

Injuries Update

Running back Demario Richard was a full participant in practice, donning a taped right ankle.

Wide receiver Jalen Harvey is out of his walking boot.

Players in Green No-Contact Jerseys

Defensive backs: Maurice Chandler (limited), Laiu Moeakiola (NP), Dasmond Tautalatasi (NP), James Johnson (NP)

Linebackers: Khaylan Thomas (limited), Salamo Fiso (not in attendance)

Offensive linemen: A.J. McCollum (limited participant), Tyson Rising (non-participant)

Tight ends/Wide receivers: Cameron Smith (NP), Grant Martinez (NP)

Quarterbacks: Bryce Perkins (not in attendance)

Situational 11-on-11 Series

Here’s how the first team was assembled during the 11-on-11 set:

Offense

QB: Brady White

RB: Gump Hayes, Nick Ralston

WR/TE: Tim White, Ellis Jefferson (outside); Fred Gammage (slot); Kody Kohl, Raymond Epps

OL: Evan Goodman (LT), Sam Jones (LG), Stephon McCray (C), Quinn Bailey (RG), Zach Roberston (RT)

Defense (appeared to lined up in team’s nickel set)

DL: Tashon Smallwood, Ami Latu, Renell Wren

LB: Christian Sam (weak side), D.J. Calhoun (strong side), JoJo Wicker (Devilbacker)

DB: df Kareem Orr (boundary corner), Bryson Echols (field corner), J’Marcus Rhodes (field safety), Armand Perry (bandit safety), Tyler Whiley (nickel)

Notes

It took one play before the defense ended the first possession—defensive lineman Ami Latu dropped back into middle-zone coverage from his nose tackle position, intercepted a Brady White pass, and then ran the ball back the other way for a pick-six. The defense was supposed to be hypothetically trailing by 2 points during the situation.

Quarterback Brady White is still growing into the position; he was “sacked” by Wicker after holding the ball too long. On his lone completion, he stepped up and then was flushed out of the pocket, rolling right before connecting with Tim White, who needed to make an acrobatic catch to keep the play in-bounds.

Defensive coordinator Keith Patterson is assuming greater play-calling abilities this season. There were multiple plays were nose tackle Ami Latu dropped back into coverage from the nose tackle spot, seemingly fulfilling Graham’s request to utilize more zone coverages as he alluded to installing at Pac-12 Media Days.

In their nickel set, the safety position has some length in Rhodes and Perry, who are each listed at six-foot. On the first team’s final possession, Rhodes tracked back to deep middle of the field to deflect a pass which Texas transfer Bryson Echols managed to haul down for an interception.

To answer a question previously posed in our comments: Tyler Whiley saw time as the nickel corner in the first-team nickel set.

Kick Return Drills

Receivers Kyle Williams and Tim White, and Gump Hayes were back fielding kicks on Friday.

PT-42 Jersey

Tim White once again sported the jersey, and is still the lone player to do so.

NFL at Practice

The San Francisco 49ers had a scout in attendance at today’s practice. He said he’ll be back for ASU’s home game vs Washington State on October 22.

Quotes

Todd Graham

“Game day tomorrow. Pretty fired up.” Saturday’s practice will include a scrimmage that Graham says will be the team’s first opportunity to play in gameday-like atmosphere with full-live tackling.

Tyler Whiley, who’s seeing time at nickel cornerback, has been a “pleasant surprise.”

Defense is “still attacking” despite incorporating more zone pressures.

J’Marcus Rhodes

“It’s just football, man.” Rhodes has seen time at both cornerback and safety, but says the transition has essentially been seamless. “I can handle (the safety spot). It’s just the more reps I get, the better and better I get.”

Graham named Rhodes as one of the defensive standouts to this point in the offseason.

Thursday’s practice notebook provides injury updates for both Bryce Perkins and Demario Richard.

Arizona State wore full pads at practice Thursday morning in the Verde Dickey Dome as preseason camp continued. Media was able to watch stretching, individual drills, special teams and 11-on-0 offense before being removed.

Injury updates:

Junior running back Demario Richard was in green today with a heavily taped right ankle. He didn’t participate in drills from what media was allowed to watch, but he was in pads.

Freshman wideout N’Keal Harry did not participate in individual drills either. He and Richard were at “Muscle Beach” during drills.

Redshirt freshman Bryce Perkins attended practice today wearing a large neck brace. From the looks of it, it’s doubtful Perkins will practice at all this season. Graham said after practice that Perkins will be out for an extended period of time but was not sure that it was a season-ending injury. Scout.com is reporting the injury will sideline Perkins for 2-3 months.

Redshirt junior safety James Johnson was in green for the second day in a row. Redshirt senior defensive back Laiu Moeakiola was not seen at practice today.

Offense:

Redshirt freshman quarterback Brady White guided the first-team offense through a quick series against no defense today. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Manny Wilkins was with the second team, and freshman Dillon Sterling-Cole got a few quick reps with the third team.

Team 1

QB: Brady White

RB: Kalen Ballage

WR (outside): Tim White, Ellis Jefferson,

WR (slot): Fred Gammage

We take a look at which ASU players scouts are looking at as they observe practice.

The new college football season is nearly here.

With that said, along with the scrutiny of fans and critics, players are now under the watch of NFL organizations almost daily.

During the second week of fall training camp alone, the Sun Devils have had scouts from the Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, New Orleans Saints and Washington visit practice.

But who are they looking at exactly?

While the senior talent doesn’t boast the same type of recognizable name power as last year’s class did, there are still some intriguing prospects to keep a watch on throughout the 2016 campaign.

Redshirt seniors in their final year of eligibility

Tim White, WR/RET – 12 (5’11”, 185 lbs)

Edmond Boateng, DE – 97 (6’4”, 265 lbs)

Tramel Topps, DL – 92 (6’2”, 280 lbs)

Frederick Gammage, WR – 89 (5’11”, 185 lbs)

Kody Kohl, TE – 83 (6’3”, 235 lbs)

Stephon McCray, OL – 77 (6’3”, 314 lbs)

Salamo Fiso, LB – 58 (6’0”, 230 lbs)

Evan Goodman, OT – 57 (6’4”, 310 lbs)

Brandon Matthews, LB – 51 (6’0”, 216 lbs

Carlos Mendoza, LB – 43 (6’1”, 231 lbs)

Laiu Moeakiola, LB/S – 28 (6’1”, 215 lbs)

De’Chavon “Gump” Hayes, DB/RET/RB – 16 (5’11”, 190 lbs)

Eric Lauderdale, WR/CB – 14 (6’2”, 194 lbs)

Most Intriguing Names:

Tim White — White pushes Oregon’s Devon Allen and USC’s Adoree’ Jackson for most-athletic player in the Pac-12, if not the entire country. He quickly became ASU’s most dynamic playmaker last season, and if he improves fundamentally as a receiver in 2016 (most notably his hands), he’ll be almost a surefire selection on draft day.

Salamo Fiso — The inside linebacker was highly disruptive in 2015, racking up 20 tackles for loss. He’ll need to replicate that sort of production to prove his numbers aren’t solely a byproduct of scheme as opposed to skill set.

Evan Goodman — Sure, fans will find it near impossible to forget how he was torched against Myles Garrett in his first career start (for what it’s worth, most of the country struggled against him, too). But with experience, Goodman has seemingly grown more and more comfortable, and if he continues to develop, could become one of the better tackles in the conference.

True seniors entering their final year of eligibility

Daniel Groebner, WR – 88 (5’9”, 182 lbs)

Matthew Thompson, LB – 47 (5’11”, 200 lbs)

Ami Latu, NT – 41 (6’2”, 290 lbs)

Frederick Gammage, WR – 89 (5’11”, 185 lbs)

Matt Haack, P – 26 (6’1”, 199 lbs)

Zane Gonzalez, K – 5 (6’1”, 190 lbs)

Most Intriguing Names:

Ami Latu — JoJo Wicker and Tashon Smallwood will soak up the attention, but Latu’s role as the nose tackle is very important to the defense’s success. Latu can move very well for his size, and should his statistical production improve, he’ll be someone to keep a true eye on.

What about the other guys?

Yes, juniors and redshirt juniors are omitted from this list because there’s not many (if any) who would logically forgo their final year of eligibility. Running backs Demario Richard and Kalen Ballage are better suited by staying for their senior years so teams can have more tape of them.

The season could possibly bring some true excitement, but if it doesn’t, don’t expect many juniors to consider moving on to the NFL. However, this senior group has potential, so don’t be surprised if they contribute in a big way for ASU and parlay that into an NFL gig.

The Arizona State Sun Devils opened up their second week of training camp Monday at the Verde Dickey Dome in Tempe.

The media viewed opening stretches, individual drills, two series of two-minute drills, Oklahoma drills, and special teams drills before being removed. Players wore shells (just helmets and shoulder pads).

Twelve players were honored for their outstanding work over the summer: tight end Kody Kohl, defensive back Gump Hayes, receiver Ellis Jefferson, linebackers Malik Lawal, Carlos Mendoza and Christian Sam, left guard Sam Jones, defensive ends JoJo Wicker, Renell Wren and Jalen Bates, and running back Kalen Ballage.

Things became intense when several offensive and defensive linemen took part in a shoving match during the Oklahoma drill portion of the practice. No punches were thrown, however.

Redshirt senior offensive lineman Evan Goodman was at the center of it.

After Brady White directed the first team during Saturday’s two-minute drill session, Monday it was Manny Wilkins who headed the first unit under center. White took snaps with the second team, as both groups worked through ASU’s two-minute offense facing no defense.

Here’s how the offenses lined up:

Team 1

QB: Manny Wilkins

RB: Kalen Ballage

WR (outside): Ellis Jefferson, Jalen Harvey

WR (slot): Tim White

TE (slot): Kody Kohl, Raymond Epps

LT: Evan Goodman

LG: Sam Jones

C: Stephon McCray

RG: Zach Robertson

RT: Quinn Bailey

Team 2

QB: Brady White

RB: Nick Ralston

WR (outside): N’Keal Harry, Cameron Smith

WR (slot): Frederick Gammage

TE (slot): Raymond Epps

LT: Mason Walter

LG: Connor Humphreys

C: Cohl Cabral

RG: Cade Cote

RT: Steven Miller

Notes: Running back Demario Richard is not injured; he did not take part in any of the two-minute drill reps, just as Ballage did during Saturday’s practice.

An Atlanta Falcons scout attended Monday’s practice.

Tim White once again sported the coveted, camouflage PT42 jersey, and is the only player to do so.

Media caught a glimpse of one 11-on-11 play before being removed. It appeared the team is still experimenting with sophomore JoJo Wicker at Devilbacker with Edmond Boateng manning the defensive end role.

The Sun Devils will practice again tomorrow as fall practices continue.
