Football:

Ben Kercheval of CBS Sports came out with a list of five bold predictions for the upcoming season, with No. 1 on the list saying Florida State will be College Football’s 2016 National Champions.

1. Your 2016 national champion will come from the ACC … but it won’t be Clemson.

That’s because it’s Florida State. What’s bold about picking a blue-blood program to win a national title, you ask? Nothing by itself, but let’s examine a few things.

Clemson figures to be the preseason ACC favorite after making a national championship appearance last season. After all, the Tigers’ offense could historically great with all of its returning pieces. However, don’t sleep on the Seminoles, which also return their entire offense. And unlike Clemson, many of FSU’s key defensive players are returning, too. Among them are defensive end Josh Sweat and safety Derwin James, both of whom saw plenty of game action in 2015.

Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher did an outstanding job in a rebuilding year by winning 10 games. After losing 29 players to the draft from 203-15? That’s a big deal. Remember, too, winning a national title starts with recruiting. The general rule of thumb is that you need to recruit at a top-10 level to compete for national championships. Over the last four years, FSU has averaged a top-five recruiting class.

The concern for FSU in 2016 revolves around the passing game, both with the consistency of the receivers and in the pass protection. The passing attack doesn’t need to be prolific, but if it can take pressure off running back Dalvin Cook, the offense becomes a lot more dangerous.

Florida State athletic director Stan Wilcox has expressed interest in moving the spring games around the state, and gave a clearer answer over the weekend. Wilcox told the Tallahassee Democrat that having a game in South Florida was not an option, and could not see the team playing their annual game south of Tampa or Orlando, however included Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville as possible future destinations.

The ACC remains in limbo with the league network with the TV revenues continuing to get wider and wider between teams. Florida State made $120.8 million in revenue last season, a long way from Texas A&M’s reign on top reeling in $192.6 million in revenue.

Recruiting:

In case you missed it, 247 Sport composite No. 1 defensive tackle Marvin Wilson released his top 10 school list which includes Florida State. The Houston, Texas native will be in Tallahassee this upcoming week for the Jimbo Fisher Football Camp and visited on FSU Junior Day where he shared his thoughts on the visit afterwards.

2018 offensive guard Verdis Brown from Mount Carmel in Chicago, Illinois received an offer from Florida State on Saturday. It was Brown’s fifth offer as he holds scholarships from Toledo, Purdue, Missouri and Illinois.

The ‘Noles also found their way into stud 2018 receiver Jacob Copeland’s top 10 list. The athlete from Pensacola, Florida is listed as the 38th overall player in the nation and third best receiver according to 247 Sports recruiting analysts, with composite rankings still to come.

Other Sports:

Former Florida State golfer Daniel Berger won his first PGA Tour event, shooting a 13-under in the FedEx St. Jude Classic. Tied in second for the second consecutive tournament was fellow ‘Nole alumn Brooks Kopeka after shooting 10-under.

With the loss suffered by Florida State baseball last night in game two of the Gainesville Super Regional, a game three, winner take all will be played today.
